110 Years Ago – 1912
George C. Scott, candidate for congress, will speak here this week.
Bess Barnes was given a kitchen utensil shower by the A.B.C. Club Wednesday afternoon.
The city council brought a team of fine horses last spring for $420. The street commissioner worked them for 110 days and sold them for the original cost.
105 Years Ago – 1917
An electric Cleaner has been added the equipment in the J.F. Kirk Barber Shop.
Beginning November 1, a war tax of 10% must be paid on all theatre tickets sold above 5¢.
Thomas R. Fenton, local real estate agent, died Sunday evening from cancer of the kidneys.
90 Years Ago – 1932
Marcus defeated Akron 12-0 in a poorly played game last Friday.
Mr. & Mrs. Darwin Smith are parents of a daughter, Mary Joan, born September 26.
Mr. & Mrs. Louis Means are parents of a son, Harold Joseph, born September 4.
The Iowa corn crop is the best in the history of the state. Some men with pickers are doing the work for $1 an acre.
The junior class will stage the class play “Here Comes Patricia” October 26. Admission is 15¢ and 25¢.
Lovell Simons is building a cattle shed on his farm south of Marcus.
Harry Kaiser recently purchased a country schoolhouse to be remodeled into a dwelling.
85 Years Ago -1937
An epidemic of sleeping sickness has taken the lives of 800 horses in Plymouth County.
Harry Grauer received a letter from his daughter, Harriet, announcing her marriage to William Reeves.
Clifford Bruce was injured Sunday evening when he was hit accidentally by an auto driven by Clinton Johnson.
Mr. & Mrs. Fred Nacke are the parents of a son born October 1, in the LeMars Hospital.
80 Years Ago – 1942
Mr. and Mrs. Ben Enneking and family moved Monday into the house vacated by Mr. & Mrs. Rudolph Luchterhandt, who moved into the house vacated by Mrs. Robert Seely, who moved into the house vacated by the Ben Enneking family.
Marcus exceeded their quota on the War Bond Drive by nearly 7 1/2 thousand dollars in 1942.
Mr. & Mrs. W.H. Daunemdiek celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary September 29, giving $100 in appreciation of the community’s help to the Telephone Company.
Mr. & Mrs. Walter Galvin have moved into a residence recently remodeled by Pete Miller.
75 Years Ago -1947
In confirmation with the countywide trend, bread prices in Marcus went up from 15¢ to 17¢.
In a beautiful candlelight ceremony in the First Methodist Church Norma McIntrire and Donald Egger were united in marriage Tuesday evening.
Charles, son of Mr. & Mrs. G.W. Evans and Donald, son of Mr. & Mrs. J.P. Evans, Marcus cousins, have received their law degrees from Creighton University.
Mr. & Mrs. Charles Rassel arrived form Las Vegas, Nevada, where the former received his discharge from the U.S. Army.
70 Years Ago – 1952
Betty Hohbach reigned as queen of the Marcus homecoming celebration school’s homecoming celebration last Thursday and Friday. Irwin Deichmann, also a senior, was the homecoming king.
The draft call for November included four Marcus boys: Harold Means, Thomas Hueser, Leonard Schnoes and William McClintock.
A lovely fall wedding was solemnized Sunday afternoon in the Grace Methodist Church when Lois White became the bride of Robert Dean Mason.
Mr. & Mrs. Tom Sleezer announce the arrival of a son, Allan John, born Friday, October 17. He weighed seven pounds and has a sister, Pamela Kay.
E.E. Evans, of Marcus, has announced the sale of the Hilltop Motors of Cherokee to Henry Bell, Aurelia farmer. The motor company handled Nash automobiles.
65 Years Ago – 1957
The Town council of the Town of Marcus, Iowa formally accepted the Marcus swimming pool from Bob Nyberg Concrete Construction Company, contractor, at 1:30 o’clock p.m. October 18, 1957.
Margaret Wankum was honored at a birthday party Friday, October 11, to celebrate her 10th birthday. There were 13 of her classmates and friends present.
Nels Pallesen and son, Gerald, drove to Sioux Falls Tuesday, where Nels remained for treatment in the V.A. Hospital. Nels recently injured his back in an automobile accident.
60 Years Ago – 1962
Mr. & Mrs. Albert Bilsland announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Joanne Kay, to Michael Harman. The wedding will take place December 14.
Mr. & Mrs. Ray Geringer moved into the home of the late Orville Hobbs at 305 N. Ames which they recently purchased.
The new Marcus Community high school building will be dedicated at a program Sunday afternoon in the school’s big new gymnasium.
55 Years Ago – 1967
A pot luck supper was held Sunday evening in the Roy Wetherell home at Peterson in observance of the birthdays of John Dawson and Edie Sand.
Darrell Gray, son of Mr. & Mrs. Don Gray was elected vice-president of the freshman class at Sioux Empire College at Hawarden.
Mr. & Mrs. Mark Bancroft and Gail spent the weekend in Kansas City and attended the football game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Houston.
50 Years Ago – 1972
The basketball cheerleaders chosen are Renee Horstmann, Kim Lenox, Eileen Herzberg, Pat Davis and Karen Roseen. The alternate is Karen Pallesen.
Susie Nielsen and Cindy Rupp each came home with two Superior ratings from the Oral Reading Clinic at USD on October 14.
A miscellaneous bridal shower honoring Nancy Hurd, bride elect of Richard Miller was held October 10 at the Meriden Evangelical Free Church.
Mr. & Mrs. Robert Richeal II are the parents of a baby girl, Meloney born October 11.
45 Years Ago – 1977
The best dressed couple at the Marcus Halloween Dance held October 22 at the Golf Course were Steve and Connie Schachterle.
St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Remsen, was the setting for the September 24 wedding of Patricia Kay Harpenau and Gary Michael Reuter.
Fred Deichmann has been hospitalized in Sioux City following an accident Saturday on the Irv Deichmann farm, injuring his hand in a corn dryer.
40 Years Ago –1982
Craig Lehan and Dawn Stowater were crowned King and Queen of the homecoming.
Wind, rain and hail brought a halt to the bean and corn harvest in this area. Hail ran several inches in depth from Kingsley diagonally to places south of Cleghorn.
35 Years Ago – 1987
Honored, as Marcus Athletes of the week are Heather Coburn for volleyball and Kent Hollenbeck for football.
Peace Lutheran Church recently installed a tracker pipe organ and will host a special concert on November 1st, 1987 with guest organists.
Max Delaney recently recovered his class ring he lost in 1945. It was found by treasurer hunter Dave Miller.
30 Years Ago – 1992
Joel Wurth has a huge dturnip grown in his garden. It weighs 4.5 lbs.
The Marcus Jaycee Chapter donated money to the City of Marcus to purchase necessary emergency medical equipment for the swimming pool
25 Years Ago – 1997
Tim and Lori Dreckman are happy to announce the arrival of their daughter Sarah, Elizabeth born on October 8. She is welcomed home by big sisters Kaylee and Erica.
Harold and JoAnn Means celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary on October 29.
20 Years Ago – 2002
The Restoration and Renovation committees of Holy Name Church cordially invites everyone to tan open house to view and enjoy the beautifully redecorated interior of our historical church on Sunday, October 27th.
