105 Years Ago – 1917
John Jungers is critically ill at his home being bedfast the past few weeks.
It was decided to hold a Colt Show in Marcus some time in October at this month’s Commercial Club Meeting.
A modern seven room, two story house is nearly completed by Stanley Cave on his farm.
Work on the new Illinois Central Depot in Marcus is expected to start this week. A large cement mixer was unloased here the first of the week and other equipment has been shipped here.
85 Years Ago -1937
Audrey Smith entertained the doll club in her home Saturday afternoon.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Alesch are the parents of a seven pound baby boy born on September 6.
Mrs. Jim Meylor and four children escaped injury Sunday when their auto skidded in loose gravel and turned over into the ditch.
Twenty five young people honored Vera Barnes at a farewell party Friday evening before she leaves for Cedar Falls to attend Iowa State Teachers College.
Marcus will play the first football game of the season with many new faces. Only five letterman are returning, namely Lee Kirchoff, Forrest Drefke, Merle Hamad, Lloyd Wixcel and ERnest Wink.
80 Years Ago – 1942
Kenneth Bancroft and Louis Collins have taken over the agency for the Willys automobile.
Marcus Public School has an enrollment of 297 pupils this year which is a slight decrease for last year.
Gasoline is 10 cents a gallon plus tax at Sjostrom Brothers.
Billie Bass and Patricia Ricker both will begin the school year with their right arm in slings, having broken them while cranking cars.
Mrs. Ray Jayne, who has operated “Helen’s Beauty Shop” here for six years, sold it this week to Helen Alesch of Inwood.
75 Years Ago -1947
Mildred C. McIntire passed away Monday evening following an operation several months ago. She leaves ten children and her husband to survive her passing.
Roger Leavitt Jr. left Saturday evening for Evanston, IL, where he will enter Northwestern University as a junior student. He is a transfer from Morningside college in Sioux City.
Harold Wood, Superintendent of Marcus High School, was taken to Sacred Heart hospital at LeMars where he underwent an appendectomy.
70 Years Ago – 1952
Jeanette Walker, freshman; Carole Booth, sophomore; Beverly Dorr, junior and Joan Garlow, senior were chosen as this year’s cheerleaders.
Mr. & Mrs. Max Waller are parents of a baby son, Steven, born at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
Bids for the resurfacing of Highway 143 north from the paving in Marcus to the O’Brien County line will be received by the State Highway Commission in Des Moines. The stretch is 5.7 miles in length.
An ad states”Open after Dark, we have added delicious hambugers to our famous, luscious ham sandwiches due to popular demand. Our friends tell us our coffee is some better this year. Open bowling Friday – Saturday & Sunday. We also have loud and quiet malted milk in many different flavors. Mile’s Alley!”
65 Years Ago – 1957
Tom Neustrom is spending a 10 day leave in the home of his father, W. H. Neustrom, and with other friends here. He has completed his boat training, and, at the end of his leave, will report to Sand Diego for reassignment.
Only one young man from the Marcus community is listed on the October Selective Service call. He is John R. (Dick) Bird, son of Mr. & Mrs. Leo Bird.
Ed Miller of the Marcus Plumbing Company has purchased the fixtures of the Malt Shop form Miller and McLeod, and will move them to his location across the street. The Millers are adding to the equipment and will open a sandwich and ice cream ship on the first floor of the building.
The Marcus Grocery will move into its new home in the Klingborg building directly across the street from its present location.
Merle Mead of LeMars purchased Gay’s Barber Shop in Marcus and will take possession September 30. Mr. & Mrs. Mead have firve children and have rented the Elmer Olson home.
60 Years Ago – 1962
Gary Booth received a server gash on his lift ankle Tuesday morning while cutting corn stalks with a corn knife. Gary was taken to Dr. Joyn’ts office where th ewound was treated and stitched and he is confined to his home.
Margaret Whited, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Whited, has enrolled at the National Business Training School in Sioux City.
Clarkson’s IGA Food Market advvertises a 2 lb. loaf of Velveeta for 69¢.
55 Years Ago – 1967
The royalty for this year of the 1967 Homecoming were Pam Wittkop queen, and Gary Sanow, king.
Robert Block, 23, son of Henry J. Block of rural Marcus, was commissioned an Army Second Lieutenant after graduating from the Infantry Officers Candidate School at Ft. Benning, GA.
Mr. & Mrs. Charles Knudson announce the arrival of a daughter on September 29. She has been named Ann Elizabeth.
Meadow Star E.U.B. Church near Washta was the setting of Miss Alayda Irwin And Philip Ladenthin. Maron of honor was Mrs. Stevev Schmillen and Maid of honor was Miss Ila Irwin, twin sister of the bride.
50 Years Ago – 1972
The past week some 6th graders brought pets for the class to see. Susan Ogren and Julie Radcliffe brought white albino rabbits. Some gerbils were brought by Randy Hueser. He had five for sale; Tom Wiese, Tim Ludwig and Joel Roese brought some. Dean Sand brought a guinea pig.
The Cherokee County sheriff office is investigating a break-in at Jim’s Texaco in Marcus which occurred late Saturday morning or early Sunday morning. Approximately $50.00 in cash was taken.
Mrs. Annie Kinzel, who is recovering from a broken hip, is now at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Roy Goodrich, where she will spend the winter months.
The all new ‘73 Chevrolet is at Nagle Chevrolet. Come in for free coffee adn donuts on September 21 and look over the new models.
30 Years Ago –1977
The old fashioned parlor in the north wendow of Nagle;s Apparel has been arranged to call attention to the nationwide observance of Constitution week from September 11-24.
Charles A. Niemann died on September 8, at St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City after an extended illness. He lived most of his life in Marcus, was a WWI veteran and retired plumber.
40 Years Ago – 1982
Meriden-Cleghorn 1982 Homecoming will be held Friday, Septemeber 17, with Willow as the Comet’s foe. Crowing bearers forhte king and queen crowning will be Chris Cargin and Kim Heschke.
Garland Geister, 59, passed away at his home in Douglas, Wyoming after and extended illneses. He is survived by his wife, Velma Cook Geister, a former Marcusite, four sons and three daughters.
35 Years Ago – 1987
The local Pizza Ranch celebrated their 1st anniversary on Saturday, September 26, with prizes and specials.
The farm of Vance and Dorotha Marquis was honored as a Century Farm at ceremonies held at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines on August 25, 1987
Mrs. Herman Lage, 97, longtime Marcus resident passed away at the Cherokee Nursing Home. Rosa and Herman owned and operated the Marcus Café for many years.
30 Years Ago – 1992
Zachary Reuter wishes to announce the arrival of his little sister Molly Ann Lee Reuter. Molly was born in South Korea on May 25, 2002. She was welcomed home October 10, 2002 to proud parents Allan and Darcy Reuter of Remsen.
