110 Years Ago – 1912
A large number of businessmen and others gathered at the social club rooms Monday night to talk over the electric light proposition and consider the matter of organizing a commercial club.
Notice: The Marcus Post office will remain open on Sunday.
School started again last week after the three-month vacation with a total enrollment of 150 and about 20 tuition pupils.
105 Years Ago – 1917
William Johnson, 50, of Cleghorn died suddenly September 5 of a heart condition.
School has started with 183 pupils enrolling Monday. There are 60 pupils in high school.
John jungers is critically ill at his home being bedfast the past few days.
It was decided to hold a colt show in Marcus some time in October at this month’s Commerical club meeting,
A moderen seven room two story house is nearly completed by Stanley Cave on his farm.
90 Years Ago – 1932
Audrey Smith entertained the doll club in her home Saturday afternoon.
Mrs. Jim Meylor and four children escaped injury Sunday when their auto skidded in loose gravel and turned over into the ditch.
85 Years Ago -1937
Ted Treinen and Francis Clarkson plan to leave next Tuesday for California were Ted will enter the Leland Stanford University.
Robert Slagter has enlisted in U.S. Navy and will go to San Diego soon.
Marcus now has a Rock Garden and fish pool, the work of Reverend C.W. Samuelson. It features a miniature church. 2×3 1/2 feet, with a steeple, finished inside with an altar, pews, carpets and electric lights. An old mill with running water and a cottage complete the pleasing scene in his back yard. 1,000 visitors have visited it.
A.G. Georges is celebrating his golden jubilee in the drugstore Friday and Saturday.
80 Years Ago – 1942
Marcus won the undisputed championship in the Cherokee county baseball league at Cherokee this week.
Charlotte Alesch and Anthony Rodesch were married Tuesday morning. August 18 at Holy Name Church.
The old license plates that are on cars will have to last for the duration according to all indications.
All interested persons are requested to meet August 21 to consider the rate increase of the West Iowa Telephone Company.
Due to lack of competent help, Treinen’s Market will hold a closing out sale.
75 Years Ago -1947
Two stacks of chopped hay in the community were damaged by fire the past week, apparently the result of internal combustion. They were on the Carl Shafer and John Bergman farms.
Carl Reed, local flower fancier, received a second and a third prize at the state gladiolus show at Algona, in the W.R. Reader and Burma classes.
Charlotte Rae arrived home Friday after spending the past three months at Arnolds Park on West Okoboji where she was employed in the Lakeside Lunch. Miss Rae will teach school this fall at Marcus No. 3.
Coach Carl Zehnder opened football practice at Marcus Public School with 28 candidates reporting for practice. He has only four lettermen remaining.
Ben Delaney retired after 53 years in the local post office. He began as an office boy and retires as postmaster.
70 Years Ago – 1952
Mr. & Mrs. Arley Grage are the parents of a son, Lee Edward, who was born August 14 in the Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars.
Pvt. Marvin Ebert is home for a 21day furlough from Fort Bliss, Tex. He will report to Fort Lawton, Wash., for overseas duty after his furlough.
A total of 576 students registered at the Marcus schools for the opening of this year.
The Marcus residences changed hands in the past few days. Viktor Straub bought $3,750, Roy Galigan bought the Flossie Seegar estate residence and Mrs. Frank Cline and Francis will move into it.
Earnest Nelson of Wellesley, Mass. has purchased the hatchery division of the Dorr Hatchery and Produce.
Seven head of steers belonging to Merle Sand tangled with the Thursday night meal train last week, coming out second best.
65 Years Ago – 1957
Lovell Roberson St. purchased the Johnson Tavern here last week, taking over its operation. The former owner is Harm Johnson, who purchased it two years ago from Frank McQueen.
New linoleum tile floor was installed in the Marcus Grocery over the Labor Day weekend, adding greatly to the appearance of the store Ray Gates’ crew did the work.
Norma Seggerman left August 23 for New Haven, Ind., where she will teach fourth grade in the Lutheran day school. Norma is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Harm Seggerman Jr.
60 Years Ago – 1962
Lighting struck Ed Springer home Sunday evening, burning our wiring, the telephone, the power meter and doing miscellaneous small damage in and around the house.
Mr. & Mrs. Jim Alesch are the parents of a daughter, Kay Marie, born August 29.
Roger Leavitt underwent surgery at Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars. A troublesome knee injury necessitated the operation.
55 Years Ago – 1967
A group of friends of the late Joe Marquis are making arrangements for a community memorial, since they feel that there are many people in the community who would like to express their regret at his death and their sympathy to his family.
Tom Wolf, of Cleghorn received top money, $42, at the Marcus Fair swine sale.
A pre-nuptial shower honoring Cheryl Jean Schlenger was given Friday, August 25, at Grace Methodist Fellowship hall.
Ground-breaking ceremonies for the new educational unit were held at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Marcus, this past Sunday during the morning worship service.
50 Years Ago – 1972
A devastating fire swept through Sandi’s Café and Nagle Chevrolet’s body shop and completely gutted both places of business.
Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Christensen of St. Paul, Minn., became parents of a baby girl on September 3. She has been named Amy Marie.
Walter Nielsen, 64, of Marcus passed away suddenly at Sioux Valley hospital in Cherokee following a brief illness.
30 Years Ago –1977
The old fashioned parlor in the north window of Nagles Apparel has been arranged by Pilot Rock Chapter DAR to call attention to the nationwide observance of Constitution Week.
Word was received here last week of the sudden death of Jane Christensen, 47, of Phoenix, Ariz. Formerly of Marcus.
40 Years Ago – 1982
Marcus receives $182,000 grant for sewer improvements.
Ray Roethler, former president of the Marcus Fair, received a plaque that was presented to him by fair president Dale Lynn for 25 years of dedicated service to the fair association.
35 Years Ago – 1987
Kyle Johnson, son of Mr. & Mrs. Roger Johnson, suffered burns about his face, hands and arms while lighting a trash fire with volatile liquids.
Western Cherokee Mutual spots a new sign and remodeled exterior following construction of a new roof on an attractive new upper front.
30 Years Ago – 1992
The Gilbert Schreier personal property and home at 102 North Locust will be sold at sold at public auction on Sunday, September 27th.
Neal Galles of Marcus graduated from the Truck and Diesel course at Northwest Iowa Technical College at Sheldon, August 7th.
25 Years Ago – 1997
Ann Mayer and Jeff Goth both of Marcus are planning a November 29th wedding in Marcus holy Name Church.
The 1997 Marcus Merchants softball team started slow with a 0-8 record. They finished with a 32-40 record. Nate Nelson led the batting with a .372 average and Steve Specht has a .350 average and led in home runs with 12.
20 Years Ago – 2002
Emmet Wolf wass inducted into the Iowa-H Hall of Fame from State-H Director Joe Kurth in Ames, Iowa.
Clara Alesch, 89, of Marcus died Thursday, September 5, 2002 at the Heartland Care Center in Marcus. Left to cherish her memory are her five daughters.
Monica Schleis and Chad Gravenish, both of Marcus announnce their engagment and forthcoming marriage. A October 5 wedding is planned.
Joe and Dottie Codiano of Brookvill, Indiana arrived Tuesday to spend the day with Jim and Joan Coleman. The families winter at Pine Island, Florida.
