115 Years Ago – 1907
The foundation of H.H. Niemann’s building is completed and brick laying will commence next week.
James William had an old fashion bar raising on his far. He built a barn 100 feet by 72 feet and 30 feet high. It is the largest in the area.
110 Years Ago – 1912
The half section farm in Section #1, Tilden Township owned by Pete McIndoe of Storm Lake, was sold to Peter Lenhoff for $50,000 about $156 per acre. McIndoe bought the land 22 years ago for $33 per acre.
Phillip Schmitt’s team of horses ran away with the wagon, down the alley between Wixcel Manufacturing Building and Mich and Lass. They plunged into the 8 to 10 foot hole in the burned out section of Main. The horses were unhurt but the wagon was demolished.
105 Years Ago – 1917
Jethro Stowater purchased the farm of 198 acres owned by John Barmanro near Germantown. The price paid was $225 per acre. The place has two sets of buildings.
Sparks form the engine on the 5:45 passenger train going west Sunday evening set fire to an oats field on the Peter McIntosh farm. The blaze was put out after burning down two shocks of oats.
John Collins purchased an Overland touring car and Lee Carney a County Club Roadster.
90 Years Ago – 1932
Harold Booth and Vance Marquis who held commissions in the offers reserve corps in the U.S. Army, left for Ft. Des Moines to instruct two weeks.
A son born to Mr. & Mrs. Andrew Reinert has been registered among recent births in the count.
Miss Marjorie Hazen and Robert Porter Jr. were married July 5th at Elk Point, SD Both are life long Marcus residents and both are graduates of Marcus High School. They are making their home with the groom’s parents.
85 Years Ago -1937
The famous Players held an amateur contest on the final evening of their engagement here. Harriet Rae won first prize with her tap dancing; Arlene Erickson, dancer, won second prize and Dorothy Meylor, pianist, third.
Mr. & Mrs. Harvey White are parents of a son, Donald Ray, born July 5.
Actual measure shows ten acres of the Walter Barnes farm yields 100 bushels of oats per acre and 960 bushels were threshed from that tract.
80 Years Ago – 1942
The city water tower is undergoing a house cleaning. It has had two coats of paint as well as a new roof.
Commencing August 4, parties wishing sugar for canning may apply at the office in the city hall in Cherokee Monday through Saturday.
John Meylor has been promoted to the rank of sergeant in the army.
75 Years Ago -1947
A beautiful wedding was performed in the Trinity Methodist Church chapel at Lincoln, NE, when Jean Bass and Leland Hogue were united in marriage by Rev. Anderson Monday evening.
The ball for the Marcus fire department turned out to be the biggest occasion of its kind ever staged here. Music was furnished by Pete’s Orchestra.
A few farmers have been combining oats the past few days with results about as expected.

70 Years Ago – 1952
Several cases of polio have developed. The most critical case is that of Marian Ricker. She has been placed on a respirator.
Fred Anderson, formerly of Cleghorn has taken over the East Side Service Station.
Jerry Steck suffered a heart attack last week brought on from overwork. His condition is not critical.
A cleaning up day will be held at the Jerry Rae farm next Monday evening to help salvage lumber from buildings destroyed by the recent tornado.
65 Years Ago – 1957
Mr. & Mrs. Robert Meehan are parents of a daughter born July 25.
Rapid progress has been made the last few weeks on the Marcus swimming pool, and estimates are that the pool will be ready by August 10.
Dorothy Seller and John Boever are engaged to be married. The wedding will take place August 24 in Vermillion.
60 Years Ago – 1962
Four new directors were elected at the annual stockholders meeting of the Farmers State Bank held July 24. They were Charles Addy, Laurence Bass, Roy Nelson and Merle Sand.
Rosemary Gravenish, 9 year old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Cletus Gravenish, underwent an appendectomy early Wednesday morning.
Leonard Seggerman, son of Mr. & Mrs. Harm Seggerman Jr. has enlisted in the U.S. Navy.
55 Years Ago – 1967
Nels Pallesen, 72, of Marcus died suddenly Thursday evening at his home, his death being the result of a heart attack.
The sale of the Idle Hour building in Marcus to Harold Ladenthin of Harold’s Rexall Drugs has been announced. Mr. and Mrs. John Bentz, who opened the Idle Hour in 1946 and have operated it since, are retiring from business.
Roman Sitzman, 40, a LeMars farmer lost his life in an unusual air accident about 8:30 Tuesday evening.
Ina Irwin, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Irwin and Steve Schmillen, son of Mr. & Mrs. Ray Schmillen, were united in marriage in a double ring ceremony performed by Rev. Kerns at the Meadow Star Church Saturday, June 24.
50 Years Ago – 1972
Mr. & Mrs. Mark Bancroft have retuned from a three week tour of Norway, Sweden and Denmark.
The Marcus Fire Department recently completed an additional course in fire fighting. The program was sponsored by N.I.V.S. of Sheldon.
30 Years Ago –1977
Greg Carver, son of Mrs. Loren Carver, was chosen to the Iowa Baseball Coaches Association All-Star baseball team.
Gary and Sheila Booth plan to open their new resturant, the Big Booth, Thursday, July 28th featuring broasted chicken.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Ruden are the parents of a daughter, born July 12th, named Becky Ann. She has a brother and a sister at home.
40 Years Ago – 1982
Pine Groves Farm of Marcus announce that their soybean research and demonstration plots are open to the public.
The Cleghorn Class of 1933 held theri first reunion, Saturday, July 3, 49 years later.
35 Years Ago – 1987
Car-Go Express of Cleghorn will hold their Grand Opening this week Saturday.
Mrs. Catherine Daltes of Idaho Springs, CO. arrived on Tuesday and will be visiting for two weeks in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Vince Garvin.
30 Years Ago – 1992
Dorothy Edgar Radcliffe, now of Spirit Lake , received a Governor’s Volunteer Recognition from Governor Terry Brandstad, for her work with public health.
Marie Anderson Ward and her nephew, Dick Rattray, celebrated the 82nd birthday of Marie and Dick’s retirement from the U.S. Marine Corp after 39 years, at Chicago. Both Marie and Dick are graduates of Marcus High School, Marie in 1928 and Dick in 1950.
25 Years Ago – 1997
Larry Slagter, 73, passed away July 13th. Funeral services were held in Faith Lutheran Church with burial in Marcus Amherst Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, 2 daughters and a brother.
Cecil and Bonnie Woodall will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, Saturday, July 26. Their children and their families will host the occasion.
20 Years Ago – 2002
RAGBRAI rolled through Marcus last Sunday filling the town for the afternoon, as an added bonus they even brought some rain.
Susan Kirchner of Marcus and Clarence Pearson, Jr. of Marcus are announcing their engagement and up coming marriage Jr. is the son of Clarence and Marguerite Pearson Pearson. The wedding will take place in Marcus on Saturday, August 10th.
