110 Years Ago – 1912
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Alesch of Amherst township on Sunday, July 21.
M.C. Evans, the Land Man, offers a large list of Minnesota farms for sale, the best at $75 to $85 per acre.
Mr. & Mrs. L.M. Miller presented their daughters, Marie and Margaret, a team of Shetland ponies and a carriage. The young ladies were delighted.
105 Years Ago – 1917
While trimming trees at his home Monday, John Collins fell a distance of 16 feet. He suffered a badly broken wrist on his right arm and it will be some time before he can fiddle a violin again. John says it will give him a good excuse to stay at home with his bride.
The biggest attraction at the Marcus baseball park so far this season will be on next Sunday afternoon when the Nebraska Indians will cross bats with the Marcus team.
Frank Weber escaped from serious injuries when his brakes failed to work and he went down a hill and off a 40 foot grade.
90 Years Ago – 1932
Forrest Marshall has been given a contract to redecorate the interior of the Methodist church and work will begin in a few days.
Henry Zembsch has served 25 years next November as a rural mail carrier here. He began his service with Uncle Sam since 1907.
Marvin, son of Mr. & Mrs. A.J. Schultz, suffered sun stroke Tuesday while shocking grain, His father and hired man saw him fall. For more than two hours he lay in a state of coma.
85 Years Ago -1937
It’s harvest time again, and with hired help so hard to get, farmers are paying as high as $4 a day for harvest hands.
Arnold Phipps stationed at Pensacola, Florida, has made 200 parachute jumps.
Born to Mr. & Mrs. Ned Bork, a daughter, July 10.
80 Years Ago – 1942
Mr. & Mrs. W.W. Bass received word from their son, Laurence, stationed in Ireland that he has been promoted to the rank of corporal in the army.
Kenneth Pallesen was chosen as the American Legion’s representative at Boy’s State.
Earl Devin has been named representative of the U.S. Employment Farm Replacement Service for the Marcus territory.
75 Years Ago -1947
Thursday, July 29, has been the date set for the annual fireman’s ball to be held this year in the new Sand Seed Service building.
The lockers for the new Marcus Cooperative Locker Plant were trucked in Wednesday and are being installed.
Workmen have been putting on the roof and pouring concrete floor of the new Dorr Dairy building at the south end of Main Street.
70 Years Ago – 1952
Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Woodall received word from their daughter in England that her husband, Capt. Wirt, has been promoted to the rank of Major.
Mr. & Mrs. Melvin Dorr were seriously injured in a highway accident Sunday morning, and their four children received minor injuries.
Open house was held July 12 in the Lawrence Radcliffe home in honor of Mrs. Anna Radcliffe who was celebrating her ninetieth birthday.
65 Years Ago – 1957
The wedding of Ruth Schuver, daughter of Mrs. Catherine Holles of Remsen and Ted Nelson of Marcus, took place Thursday morning, July 11 in Holy Name Rectory in Marcus
A daughter, Denise Jean was born to Mr. & Mrs. Abe Smith on Monday, July 22.
Mrs. Reinhard Olson, 76, a lifelong resident of the Marcus community passed away at the Marcus Nursing home early Thursday morning.
60 Years Ago – 1962
Dick Galles is the new operator of the Texaco station here.
Mr. & Mrs. Garland Hohbach are parents of a son, Kirby, born July 7.
People of Marcus have been showing quite a bit of concern lately over Dutch elm disease.
A crew of men started this week to paint the huge concrete grain silos of the Farmers cooperative Elevator here.
55 Years Ago – 1967
Mrs. Bud Bork of Marcus won the $125 Columbia tandem bicycle which was the first prize in the local contest sponsored by Nagel’s Apparel.
The former home of the late Miss Cora I. Gund will be sold by sealed bids to settle the estate.
Mr. & Mrs. Richard Irwin of Quimby announce the approaching marriage of their daughter, Mary Lou, to Chuck Johnson, son of Mrs. Catherine Johnson of Marcus.
50 Years Ago – 1972
Stanley Nervig was promoted to cashier of the Farmers State Bank at the annual stockholders meeting in July.
In a morning ceremony on May 30 at Minnetonka, Minnesota, Diane Cronin and Thomas Herrmann were united in marriage.
Mr. & Mrs. Abe Smith, Danny and Denise, spent the 4th of July in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Lenoard Smith at yankton, S.D.
30 Years Ago –1977
Faith Lutheran Church was the setting for the July 2 wedding of Carl Gates and Daniel Mullen.
Joseph Rassel, 92, Marcus, died July 15 in the Happy Siesta Nursing home after a brief illness.
40 Years Ago – 1982
Bob Hagey, a local painter and decorator at Marcus found a lost golden wedding band of Mrs Charles Gutenkauf of 103 N. Locust Street while pulling weeds in her garden. The ring was entangled in the roots. It was 36 years ago that Mrs. Gutenkauf lost the ring.
Mrs. Warren Mayer of Yankton died Monday, July 5 at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton.
35 Years Ago – 1987
Rachelle Carver has been accepted for admission to attend Spencer School of Business. Chuck Ferrin of Omaha, Linda Pickham and Sarah of Omaha and Mrs. Clifford Ferrin, rural Marcus recently returned from a two-week vacation in southern and middle California.
John and Rachel Wibe went to Des Moines to attend a Wibe family reunion over the weekend.
30 Years Ago – 1992
Kenny Drefke of Marcus was the recipient of the $1,000 Karl King Scholarship that was awarded on Sunday, June 28, at Auditions in Fort Dodge.
Derrick Thomas All-Pro Linebacker of the Kansas City Chiefs met an enthusiastic staff and employees on Thursday at K-Products. K-Products in November of 1990 started a new division, #1 Apparel to sere the licensed sporting goods industry. Thanks to the promotional support of pro football players their new drawstring hat is seen on national television and has meet with significant market success.
25 Years Ago – 1997
MMC intrumental music director, Jerry Bertrand, was guest director of the Sioux City Municipal Band at the Sunday concert at Grandview Park, Sunday, July 13th
Former Marcusite, Loren Willey, 84, passed away June 10th in California. He graduated with the 1931 class of Marcus High. Survivors include 2 sons and 2 brothers.
20 Years Ago – 2002
Mr. & Mrs. John Schneider of Remsen are proud to announce the engagement of their daughter, Tonia Rae, to Matthew Schmillen, son of Mr. & Mrs. Chuck Schmillen of Marcus. A September 7th wedding is planned.
Welton C Hesse, 77, of Cherokee and former Meriden and Cleghorn, Iowa resident passed away Thursday afternoon, July 11 at his home in Cherokee following a short illness.
Jason Rasmus and Nathan Foresman earned honors in the sheep show at the Cherokee County Fair. Jason was senior showman and Nathan earned Champion pen of three honors.
