110 Years Ago – 1912
A double ring double wedding took place at the Congregational Church in LeMars June 24 when Marion Hinds and Clara Jackson became the wives of William Hospers of Orange City and Raymond Roach of Seattle, Washington.
Jacob Johannsen and Allie Jensen are at Paullina in serious condition as a result of having drunk a cleansing solution containing lye, which they believed to be whiskey.
The barn on the Flanagan farm tenanted by James Dalton, was destroyed by fire late Thursday night.
105 Years Ago – 1917
Walter Corber, who resigned as councilman, is succeeded by C.R. McConnel.
A pretty home wedding was solemnized last Saturday when Alicia Hyndman became the bride of James Hakeman.
Phil Schmidt, Vincent Walsh and Walter Dickson went to LeMars on Monday to report at Company K headquarters.
90 Years Ago – 1932
Marvin, son of Mr. & Mrs. A.J. Schultz, suffered sun stroke Tuesday while shocking grain.
Mrs. William Garvin closed her millinery shop today after being in business for 39 years.
Ray Walsh is driving a new Willys coach purchased last Friday.
Nagel’s built a $6,000 dance hall with shifts working around the clock to finish it before the fourth of July. It is directly behind the former dance hall and will hold about 400 people.

Births recorded this week from Marcus are daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Elmo Brownmiller, born June 12, Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Cochrane, born June 18.
A marriage license was issued to William Baumgartel and Ida Schultz this week.
Stanley Addy was re-elected as president of the Farmers Elevator Co. at their annual meeting Saturday.

Mr. & Mrs. Otto Frangenberg, Mrs. Merle Sand, June Heinis and Dale Davis of Peterson, left Sunday on a trip to Washington.
Mr. & Mrs. Claude Grey entertained at a party Monday in honor of her niece, Nancy Ann, on her seventh birthday.
75 Years Ago -1947
The Nielsen Electric Shop has announced Saturday, July 25 as the tentative date for the formal opening of their new home.
Iowa farmland rose $8.00 an acre in the last 6 months, and June 1 stood at an average of about 157.00 per acre.
Marie Meylor became the bride of Sylvester Brech on July 25, in Holy Name Church.
Mr. & Mrs. T.J. Woodall announce the approaching marriage of their daughter, Bonnie June, to Mr. Cecil J. Irwin.
70 Years Ago – 1952
Mr. & Mrs. Melvin Dorr were seriously injured in a highway accident Sunday morning.
A brief but devastating tornado struck Marcus and vicinity about 6:30 Monday evening doing considerable damage in town and hundreds of thousands of dollars worth in the adjacent farming area. The towns of Cleghorn, Meriden and Larrabee were also in the path of the storm.
A daughter was born to Mr. & Mrs. R.D. Snyder Sunday at Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars.
65 Years Ago – 1957
Mr. & Mrs. Jack Curry of Ames are parents of a son. Michael John, born Friday, July 12.
Mary Constance Sand and Dale Bunkers exchanged vows at a nuptial Mass in Holy Name church Wednesday morning, June 29.
Jim Galigan, Marcus decorator and painter, is seriously ill in Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars.
Dr. and Mrs. M.D. Hayden and family returned Sunday, July 7, after a month’s trip. Dr. Hayden worked two weeks in the x-ray department at the navy hospital at Bremerton, Washington.
60 Years Ago – 1962
Magnus Johnson, 78, passed away suddenly at his home Tuesday, July 3, from a heart ailment.
Nile Eberly has purchased a home on East Cedar Street in Marcus form Tom Roberts.
At a special meeting Monday evening the congregation of Peach Lutheran church of Marcus voted to build a new church.
Mr. & Mrs. Dick Petersen of Swea City are the parents of a son, Robert, born July 16 in Estherville.
55 Years Ago – 1967
The Sand Seed Service softball tem won two games and lost one the past week.
A second hail storm struck this community last Wednesday night, heavily damaging crops on a number of farms about five miles south of town. Mr. & Mrs. Leo Brady of Marcus announce the engagement of their daughter Evelyn, to Bruce Graff of Granville and the engagement of their daughter Linda, to Thomas Christensen, also of Granville.
50 Years Ago – 1972
Jerry Steffen, 15 year son of Mr. & Mrs. Don Steffen, suffered a broken leg in a diving mishap at the community swimming pool Sunday evening.
Ed Meylor is home from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota where he had been a patient for ten days.
Captain Douglas Nester son of Mr. & Mrs. Donald Nester of Marcus, was awarded the bronze star medal for meritorious achievement in ground operations against hostile forces in the Republic of Viet Nam from February 1971 to January of 1972.
45 Years Ago – 1977
Howard Peavy, manager of Coop Oil, announces that Henry Wulf has received special recognition for his careful driving ability and has been award a special Safe Driving Award
Holy Name Church was the setting for the June 18 wedding of Jane Bird and Joe Handlos.
40 Years Ago – 1982
Mrs. Merle Sand, Barb and Mandy, attended Dr. Steven Sand’s chiropractic open house at Mesa, Arizona.
Ronald and Barb Prescott of Marcus are the parents of a 9 pound 4 ounce son, born Wednesday, June 23, and is named William Robert. He is welcomed home by two sisters.
35 Years Ago – 1987
The 4th of July events were only slightly dampened by a 5 inch rain causing the cancellation of the fast pitch softball and the fireworks.
Cindy Rupp, daughter of Hazel and Lawrence Rupp, participated in Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, Minn. She finished the race in 4 hours and 18 minutes and place 508th in the Women’s field.
30 Years Ago – 1992
Jannell Egger of Cleghorn and Michael Maurer will be married July 18th at Cherokee.
Mrs. Marie Norris, 92, a Marcus resident since 1936, passed away at Mankato, MN. June 22. Burial was in Marcus Holy Name Cemetery. She is survived by 4 sons and 2 daughters
25 Years Ago – 1997
The huge old “Cope” house near Kingsley was moved nearly 20 miles to Marcus, to make a future home for the Floyd and Elaine Rassel family.
the August Reinholdt family reunion was held Saturday, July 5 at the Elmer Reinholdt home.
George Engebretson will be serving the Marcus community ast “Officer in Charge” until a new postmaster can be named. The vacancy was created when long time postmast Fred Wilkens retired July 3rd.
20 Years Ago – 2002
Greg and Floria Geerdesof Marcus announce the engagement and upcoming wedding of their daughter, Gwen to Jay Mathahs of Thompson, IA. A September 14 wedding is being planed.
Marilyb, Amanda, Samantha and Mikayla whitney of Des Moines are enjoying a few days in the Stan and Joyce Nervig home.Lt. Col. Elizabeth Johnson of West Point, New York arrived on Monday, July 11, for a two-week visit with her parents, Verdell and Marian Johnson.
Pat’s Body Shop is celebrating 20 years in business with an Appreciation Coffee on Saturday, July 13 to show their appreication to their customers and the community.
