110 Years Ago – 1912
Linford Stowater was thrown from his horse and received severe cuts from a wire fence. He is improving nicely.
Will Challman was married to Miss Nora Newman of Sioux City.
105 Years Ago – 1917
Arthur Johnson has purchased the P.C. Derthick 120 acre farm in Amherst for $212 per acre.
Walter Hawthorne is improving from the blood poisoning he received in the hand.
Cimm Means has purchased the Maxwell touring car and Fred Grauer an Overland Six touring car from the Flynn Treinen Auto Company.
Dr. J.B. Hollenbeck, veterinary inspector, has been in the county on a tour warning farmers against hog cholera.
90 Years Ago – 1932
Evelyn Dorr and Marian Dixson received valedictorian and salutatorial awards in Marcus high school for their four years work. Belva Dixson and Dorothy Mae Dorr, sisters of the other two girls, won the highest scholastic awards offered in junior high school.
Mrs. Katherine Carey passed away May 21 in her home at 53 years of age. She leaves one sister, two brothers and a host of other relative to survive her.
The Kass building on Main Street is being remodeled for a dance hall.
C.W. Brower and W.W. Bass have rented an office in Anthon where they will engage in buying hogs and shipping livestock.
85 Years Ago -1937
Sons were born to Mrs. J.J. Garvin’s two daughters, Mrs. Robertson of Indiana and Mrs. Uhl of Sioux City on the same day and at the same hour. They live 1,000 miles apart.
G. A. brink of Correctionville has leased the Mrs. Frances Flaherty residence for a funeral home.
Olaf Nelson of Albert City became the owner of the William Mortuary and Satterlee funeral home this week.
Texaco Super Service at the south end of Main Street was formally opened by the operators, Kenneth Bancroft and dick Kenney, last week.
Roger Leavitt, Jr. of the Marcus Lumber company, has started the manufacturing of trailer houses, with Alfred Chinn doing the building.
80 Years Ago – 1942
Ray Peters had a close call Thursday, when he opened the unit of an old refrigerator and escaping gas fumes penetrated his lungs.
Mr. & Mrs. J. P. Delaney announce the approaching marriage of their daughter Mary Margaret, to Bernard J. O’Laughlin.
John Pease will take over the management of the Dorr Feed Mill on June 1.
Specials at Treinen’s Market this week are: pork chops, 28¢ a lb., fresh ground beef, 22¢ a lb., and Folgers Coffee at 33¢ a lb.
75 Years Ago -1947
Geroge Dorr of Marcus, catcher on the Iowa State Teachers College baseball nine this spring led the Panther sluggers with a .360 average.
Workmen this week are putting a new floor and a new sidewalk in front of the Marcus Motors in the Lage Buildings.
Harvey Geibe, Jr. has purchased the Marcus café of Geraldine Boever, and is busy this week redecorating and overhauling in preparation for opening for business Saturday.
Generally speaking, the damage done by last week’s snow and frost in this locality was less than was feared. Corn and soybeans, blanketed by the heavy snow, survived the frost with no permanent damage.
70 Years Ago – 1952
A family reunion was held at the William Collins home in honor of their daughter, Sister Mary Donard, visiting here Sister Mary Murial from Chicago, IL.
The home of Mrs. Ralph Cave was the scene of a lovely shower in honor of Delores White Sunday, June 8.
Several hundred new seats will be added to the Marcus outdoor theatre for this Saturday evening’s free show, according to the Commercial Club committee’s announcement.
65 Years Ago – 1957
Miss Regina McLaughlin attended a piano teacher’s workshop at Westmar college in LeMars Monday.
Mary Oswald, daughter of Mrs. & Mrs. Leo Oswald of Marcus, graduated from Mercy hospital school of Nursing on Sunday, after completing three years of training.
Mr. & Mrs. Al Bork of Phoenix, AZ are spending their vacation in Marcus visiting friends and relatives. They are headquarters at the Marcus Hotel.
60 Years Ago – 1962
Mrs. Thomas Garvin, 83, a resident of Marcus community for 6o years, died Saturday, June 10. She has been in failing health for some time.
Gene Polson, 11 year old son of Mr. & Mrs. Langdon Polson of Marcus recently won 7th place in a national contest sponsored by a shoe company. His prize was a badminton set.
Bob Reed, son of Mr. & Mrs. Carl Reed has taken a leave of absence from the University of Wisconsin and will teach Educational Television at the University of Hawaii for a year.
55 Years Ago – 1967
Tyrone Artz was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medicine at the commencement exercise at the University of Iowa, June 9.
Gerald T Slota, 37 of Remsen passed away Monday at St. Vincent’s hospital in Sioux City.
Grant Nelson, son of Mr. & Mrs. Lowell R Nelson of Marcus was promoted to captain in a formation in Saigon.
50 Years Ago – 1972
Mr. & Mrs. Gene Nenortas are parents of a son Lee Michael born, Monday, June 5 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
Janice Grauer and Monica Sand began a cosmetology course Monday morning at the Stewards School in Sioux City.
Faith Middaugh and Dale Juhl announce their engagement. Faith is the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Jack Middaugh of Hopkinton, NH and Dale is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Howard Juhl of Remsen.
45 Years Ago – 1977
An open house reception was held Saturday afternoon in Cleghorn shelter house honoring Dennis Goodrich and Julie Schurbert of Ames, who were married June 5.
Mr. & Mrs. Loren Corrington on Cherokee announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Kim Marie, to David Means, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Means of Marcus. An August 5th wedding is being planned.
Mrs. L. L . Norris returned home Sunday afternoon after spending the past two weeks in the home of Dr. & Mrs. Harold Norris at Jacksonville, IL.

40 Years Ago – 1982
Royden Rupp, on behalf of the Cleghorn Lions Club, presented a check for $100 to Bob Ruden for the Marcus Rescue Unit, and Howard Rupp presented a check for the same amount to Joe Wurth for the Cherokee Work Activity Center at the meeting of the Lions Club.
The Ol’Liberty Hall in Paullina was destroyed by fire early Sunday morning. Only ashes and memories remain.
35 Years Ago – 1987
Jack Clarkson has been promoted to vice President of Berkley Structures. Clarkson has worked at Berkley for the last three and on-half years, and most recently worked in sales.
A group of fishermen – Jim Pearson, Dave Stevenson, Marv Ebert and Jim Sanow returned from cat fishing on the Red River near Halstad, Minnesota. They reported good fishing with the largest catfish landed around 8 lbs.
30 Years Ago – 1992
Wednesday, June 10, Marcus Oil Company will close, and thus one of the oldest business places in Marcus becomes history and a victim of the times Marcus Oil as conceived on about April 15, 1919 by a group of stockholders.
An open baby shower will be held Saturday, June 13 at the Pizza Ranch, honoring Den Puhrmann and daughter Stephanie Jean.
Dorothy Lage will be honored by here children for her 80th birthday with an open house on Sunday, June 21.
The Marcus Community Coop will donate 1¢ per gallon for all fuel and gas that is sold through their cordtrol pumps this year to the Heartland Care Center Project.
25 Years Ago – 1997
Ann Schmillen meet her penpals Ann Moeller of Lansing, Michigan for the very first time over Memioral weekend. The girls have been penpals since 5th grade.
Mr. & Mrs. Francis Delperdang will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on June 21 with a mass at Holy Name Church with a reception to follow. Hosts for the occasion will be their children and grandchildren.
Merritt and Velma Jenness will celebrate their 5oth wedding anniversary with an pen house at their home on Sunday, June 22. The event will be hosted by their children.
20 Years Ago – 2002
Harold Ladenthin attended his 60th Anniversary Reunion of his pharmacy class at the University of Iowa on June 6-9. Harold was the well known pharmicist for thiry three years in Marcus at Harold’s Pharmacy.
Kids Wonderland Preschool visited the Marcus Vet Clinic and Donna Hoefling told them how to care for pets. The kids got to play with baby kittens and some puppies that were at the Vet Clinic.
Lurline Bentz, 76, of Marcus died unexppectedly on Wednesday, June 5 at the Floyd Valley Hospital . Survivors include her two sons, and a daughter.
