110 Years Ago – 1912
The social of Grand Meadow High school last Friday evening netted $44, the proceeds go to but an ogran.
Will Wood left yesterday for Larchwood where he expects to remain for a year at least as he and Miss Lena Zane have taken a contract to conduct the telephone office there for that length of time.
Jenks and Grauer, proprietor of the Imperial Cage of thsi city, have completed arrangements for the opening of a modern Cafe in the village of Cleghorn, in the building north of the Snyder drug store. They will have an up-to-date soda fountain and fixtures and will no doubt meet with deserved success.
105 Years Ago – 1917
George S. Tutt on Tuesday purchased Ben Delaney’s residence property and will take possession on the first of March.
The Sioux Valley hospital is now nearing completion.
Floyd Morris and Irene Nagle left Wednesday to attend the funeral of their uncle, W. H. Nagle, at Grand Ridge, IL.
Misses Souhan and Amstrong assisted the juniors and seniors with a taffy pull in the high school gym Wednesday evening.
Sjostrom brothers have purchased a building and $8,000 worth of equipment to go into the creamery business, manufacturing ice cream and have cold storage.
90 Years Ago – 1932
Claude Gray purchased the Joe Martinson equipment and good-will of the Martinson garage this week and will be assisted by Hillis Carris.
A wedding officiated by Rev. Plummer took place February 3 when Hazel McNally became the bride of Harry Hazen.
Floyd Knox began his duties as clerk in the Marcus post office Saturday succeeding Roy Galigan who very capably served in the capacity for the last 13 years.
Louis Collins, manager of the Standard oil filling station at Cherokee, has been presented with a silver cup signifying that his station has made the greatest increase in this territory.
85 Years Ago -1937
Ray Niemann president at a meeting of the Better Marcus Club Monday evening where it was decided to beautify the corner south of Marcus and erect an attractive Welcome to Marcus sign.
Marriage license was issued this week to Lillian Johnson of Marcus and Carl Rupp of Cherokee County.
Patricia Norris entertained a group of girl friends Saturday afternoon at a party in honor of her 10th birthday.
80 Years Ago – 1942
The Marcus Eagles were victorious in three games last week, winning a fast and close game from Larrabee and also from Cherokee I.C. and Meriden.
Mrs. W.E. Woodall was honored at a miscellaneous shower Sunday afternoon in the Legion hall. She is the former Lorraine Carley.
Marcus men numbering 140 between the ages of 20 – 45 registered at the Legion Hall Monday for the draft. This was the second highest number of registrants in the county.
Joan Berger was hostess to the 5th and 6th grades of Grand Meadow school Friday evening at a Valentine party.
75 Years Ago -1947
Nagel Brothers have announced the sale of their produce business in Marcus to the M & J R. Hakes company of Kaurens, with immediate possession. The sale marks the passing of one of the oldest business concerns in town, the Nagels having started up in the produce business twenty-five years ago.
Tuesday evening’s westbound bus became stuck in a snow bank a mile west and a half-mile south of town, and the company was compelled to pick up passengers in motor cars and continue the trip.
George Dorr, son of Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Dorr, and regular catcher on the Iowa State Teachers’ College baseball team last year, is among the 13 batterymen, pitchers and catchers who will state their spring training grind this week.
Lt. Harry Nelson of Marcus, son of Mrs. Agnes Nelson has received a permanent citation from his Gold Star in lieu of Second Silver Star medal, from Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal, for the President. He received the award for a performance in flight during the battle for Leyte Gulf.
70 Years Ago – 1952
Jerry Haahr left Thursday of last week for his home at Pasadena, CA following a week’s visit with his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Jens Haahr.
John Irwin, Marcus blacksmith, has bought a Davis county farm and the family will move there if Mr. Irwin can dispose of his Marcus property in time to take over the farm this year. The farm is near Bloomfield and is 200 acres.
Mr. & Mrs. Percy Means are parents of their first child, a daughter born on Wednesday morning, February 6, in the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
65 Years Ago – 1957
Hans Meehan is carrying a broken right arm in a cast. The accident happened when on of Han’s cows blocked a right cross with a hip.
The Hinton fire department bought the old fire truck belonging to the Community Fire Department. The old truck was replaced by anew one last summer. The truck brought $800.
In a switch of managers February 1, Dick Means took over the operation of the Rock Island Lumber Yard in Marcus and Loren Corrington assumed management of the company’s Cleghorn branch.
60 Years Ago – 1962
Mrs. Susan Hoxie, the oldest resident of the Marcus community, died about eleven o’clock Tuesday morning, having passed her 100th birthday by just two days.
Ralph Cave, who is retiring from the farm, will hold a closing-out farm sale at his place southwest of Marcus.
Sharon Drefke of Marcus has enrolled at Nettleton Business Training College in Sioux City.
Margaret Brady of Cedar Falls spent the semester brake in the home of her mother Mrs. Jack Brady.
55 Years Ago – 1967
Virginia Grauer, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Floyd Grauer, will receive her cap as a student practical nurse at the capping ceremonies of St. Luke’s Hospital School of Practical Nursing at St. James Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids.
Mr. & Mrs. Ellis Holmes observed their wedding anniversary with a dinner at the Waeside in LeMars. Guest included Mr. & Mrs. Delbert Drefke, Mr. & Mrs. Wesley Carney, Mr. & Mrs. Avery Ames and Mr. & Mrs. Forrest Booth.
50 Years Ago – 1972
Mr. & Mrs. LeRoy Brownmiller announce the sale of the Dew Drop Inn to Elva Igou of Sprit Lake. The Igrours had been in the restaurant business prior to coming to Marcus.
Jane Ann Carey, has been named Marcus high school’s Betty Crocker homemaker of tomorrow for 1972.
Mr. & Mrs. Tom McIntosh became the parents of their first child, a son named Phillip Andrew.
Gary Rassmussen has qualified for the Big Bowl in Sioux City.
45 Years Ago – 1977
Woody’s Lounge under the new management of Tim Galles and Mark Wood are having their Grand Opening on Thursday, Feb.17.
Denny Braun bagged a large puma, or mountain lion, that he shot in the remote mountainous area around Salmon, Idaho. The cat is an extremely large one at 170 pounds.
Winning the reserve senior champion female award at the 1977 National Western Stock Show in Denver in Register of Merit Herford competition was Quantock BJ3DG an entry of Ogren and Sons and Quantock Cattle Co.
40 Years Ago – 1982
It was recognition of teachers Day in Iowa and striving to show their gratitude to the entire faculty of Marcus Community School District, Superintendent John Mitts, Principal Jim Lens and Principal Tom Rubel prepared breakfast for the whole bunch.
Mr. & Mrs. Joe Cronin and daughter, Barbara attended the Iowa Pork Producers meeting in Des Moines, Barbara, being District I Pork Queen, participated in the Iowa Pork Queen contest.
Ryan Collins received a five dollar check and a certificate from the Cherokee VFW Auxiliary for representing the county in the voice of Democracy speech contest.
35 Years Ago – 1987
Mark and Cynthia Rupp celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary at an open house on Sunday, February 15 at Holy Name Hall.
Raymond Gates, 73, passed away Monday, February 2nd in the Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.
30 Years Ago – 1992
Neva Witter had the misfortune of falling at home recently where she received a broken left wrist and a broken right thumb simultaneously. Neva, who has always been as agile as a deer, says the only broken bone she has had broken in her lifetime were a few ribs she fractured while playing basketball and that was many years ago.

Barb & Jerry Martin and Debbie and Steve Puhrmann flew to Dallas, TX to attend Home Interiors 40th Anniversary Gala.
Iowa Treasurer, Michael Fitzgerald, said the Marcus Fair will receive $2,500 to support improvements to the fair grounds.
