The Royals Extend Their Win Streak to 18 Games

By Michael Rupp
Lady Royals have really made some noise in recent weeks, and they haven’t slowed down at all this week. The week started off with a road trip to face Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn for the second time this season. The Hawks are at last place in the War Eagle, while the Royals remain in first.
MMCRU got off to a quick start, putting up 40 points in the first half, while only allowing the Hawks 15. The bench saw a lot of time on the court past the first quarter, which is good due to the many Seniors starting for the Royals that will have to be replaced next season. The Royals ran out the clock in the 3rd and 4th and went home with the win 68 to 31.
It was a great night for Senior Taylor Harpenau who went 8 for 11 from the floor, and 3 for 4 from three point range, for a total of 22 points. Senior Ellie Hilbrands mounted 18 points, going 9 for 14 with 7 rebounds. Senior Emily Dreckman also put up 17 points. Junior Kora Alesch had 9 assists, and Mya Holmes had 7 rebounds.
On Tuesday the Royals hit the road again to face South O’Brien. The Royals got off to a hot start in the first, putting up 26 points in the first quarter and 20 in the second. Again, the Royals were able to get the bench more involved after gaining a huge lead early. In the 3rd and 4th the Royals only totaled 14 points, but only allowed the Wolverines 11 more. Final score was 60 to 21.
Again it was the Seniors Hilbrands, Dreckman, and Harpenau leading the way for MMCRU. Hilbrands would score 16 points, along with Dreckman’s 15, and Harpenau’s 13. Hilbrands also had 9 rebounds and shot 72.7% from the floor. The Royals currently sit in 4th place according to the IGHSAU rankings, and 1st in the latest Varsity Bound rankings.
