105 Years Ago – 1916
Miss Esther Sanow, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. August Sanow, was married to Mr. Harbert Ford, of Kansas, at Sioux City, on Thursday, December 7, They will be at home on a farm at Frankfort, Kansas, after March 1.
The Marcus town basketball team, which was recently organized, went to Kingsley last Friday and defeated the Kingsley basketball team by a score of 28 to 5. The Marcus players are; E. Loomis, Vernon Wilson, gordon Garvin, Lorne Altizer and Ray and Vince Walsh and Bernard Seeger. Phil Schmitt is manager of the team.
Seventy Five relatives and friends attended a birthday party at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Edwin Meyer, living south of Cleghorn, last Saturday night, which was the occasion of the thirty-fourth birthday anniversary of Mrs. Meyer and her brother, George Rosch of Amherst.
95 Years Ago – 1926
Hugo Nelson went to his old home in Sweden a year ago alone but arrived here a fortnight ago with his bride. They will live on a farm south of town.
The lineup for the first team the Marcus-Quimby game Friday in which the local team won by an 11 – 8 score was Fritzie Wilkins playing right guard; Marian Dorr, left guard; Emil Anderson, center; Harold Booth, left forward; Delmer Drefke, right forward; and Delbert Drefke, right forward.
Miss Fern Brown, who teaches at Linn Grove, returned home last week to spend her Christmas vacation with here parents, Mr. & Mrs. Henry Brown.
90 Years Ago – 1931
William Hoxie who was injured in a bad fall several weeks ago is again able to be up and around. Mr. Hoxie had two ribs broken and suffered other injuries when the ladder upon which he was standing gave away.
Harco Eggs is a good all round coal at a reasonable price. For Sale at the Marcus Lumber Co.
Nels Nelson of Chicago came Sunday for a couple weeks visit in the home of his sister, Mrs. Swan Swanson.
85 Years Ago -1936
Fritz Wilkens, who has been employed for the last few years at the Weart & Lysaght lumber company here, has been appointed manager of the local firm, to succeed the late J. E. Walsh.
Returning this week from a hunting trip to Emporium, PA, Elmer and Eldred McIntyre brought with them a nice specimen of a four point buck.
A business transaction was completed the first of the week, by which Roman Treinen sold the Marcus Café to Mrs. Mabel Riter of Ellsworth, Minnesota. She will take over January 1.
80 Years Ago – 1941
The Marcus High school basketball won their third game of the season last Tuesday night when they defeated St. Mary’s of Remsen 38 – 25.
Fifty-six boxes of home made candy and cookies were packed for the boys in the service, at the Legion hall Sunday afternoon under the guidance of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Mr. Daniel Collins, one of the early pioneers of this community passed away at the hospital where he had been a patient during a brief illness. Mr. Collins has been a resident of the community for sixty-three years.
75 Years Ago -1946
Sgt. William Seggerman arrived in the home of his parents last week from Camp Kilmer, NJ, where he recently landed after the serving a year in Germany with the army.
Mr. & Mrs. Ted Berg of Rockford, IL, have purchased the Idle Hour Café from Ray Neuroth and took possession the first of the week. Mr. & Mrs. Berg were in the service and have been employed at Rockford since being discharged a little over a year ago.
H.B. Wheeler of Marcus this week received his thirty-five year button from the Milwaukee railroad. Mr. Wheeler has been a Milwaukee employee for thirty-seven years, but the awards are made at three year intervals. He has been on sick leave from the railroad since 1940.
70 Years Ago – 1951
Marilyn Alesch, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Joe Alesch Jr. of Marcus had the honor of having her picture chosen to grace the cover of the new circulars for the St. Joseph school of nursing in Sioux City. Miss Alesch is in her last year of training at the school.
The Carl Klingborg construction crew have most of the frame work up for the new home for the Emerald Johnson family. The floor space will be 38×58, containing six rooms and bath and a double garage. It is being built on the corner lot north of the two homes which Mr. Klingborg erected the past season, in the east part of town along the east side of Highway 3.
Merle Sand bought the 120 acre farm which was sold by the Dunn estate Tuesday. The place brought $250.00 per acre.
65 Years Ago – 1956
Don Nacke, son of Mr. & Mrs. Fred Nacke and a member of the IA University band, playing trumpet, is sure of a seat at the Iowa-Oregon State game at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA, January 1.
Mrs. Reinhart Olson is at the home of her son, Elmer, south of Marcus, recuperating from a dislocated shoulder.
Mr. & Mrs. Lawerence Swanson of Long Beach, CA, announce the engagement of their daughter Ann Frances, to Darrell Lietz.
Holy Name Wildcats went down to defeat hear Tuesday evening before the onslaught of the red-hot Storm Lake St. Mary’s team.
60 Years Ago – 1961
Monday evening a group of over 100 people from the area met in the Municipal building and made plans for a drive in to sell shares in a corporation for the purpose of constructing a medical clinic here.
Mrs. George Treinen, 76, a life-long resident of the Marcus community died Friday evening at her home. Her health had been failing for some time.
Mr. & Mrs. Jerome Letsche became the parents of their first child, a son Sunday, December 17 at Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars.
55 Years Ago – 1966
Julie Irwin of Marcus was crowned the Snow Queen at the annual NBT College Christmas banquet Thursday, December 15 at the Martin Ballroom in Sioux City. Julie is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Cecil Irwin and is a Executive Secretarial student.
Pvt. Francis Gravenish of Fort Sill, OK, is spending a ten day holiday furlough in the home of his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Cletus Gravenish. He has completed his basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO.
50 Years Ago – 1971
Steve Smith of Ames, son of Mr. & Mrs. James Smith, will be performing with the Iowa State University marching Band at the pre-game show and at halftime at the Sun Bowl in El Paso, TX on Saturday, December 18.
The youngsters if the Marcus and neighboring communities are invited to a free movie this Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock at the Marland. The film is an animated feature, “1001 Arabian Nights” starring the Nearsighted Mistor Magoo.
Mrs. Clara Bird entertained at a pre-Christmas party Friday evening at her home. The evening was spent at cards with Mr. & Mrs. Leo Brady winning high prize.
45 Years Ago – 1976
There will be an open ridal shower honoring Pat (Snyder) Sand Thursday, December 16 at the Marcus Municipal building starting at 7:30 p.m. with a salad luncheon.
Mr. & Mrs. Ronald Klingbeil are proud to announce the birth of a daughter on November 8, 1976. She weighed 7 lbs. 12 oz. and has been named Emily Jo.
Mr. & Mrs. Bill Cadwallader of San Diego arrived Saturday afternoon for a two-weeks’ visit with her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Lyle McIntosh.
Ms. Diment reports that the sophomores earned about $90 at their record dance after the Anthon-Oto game.
40 Years Ago – 1981
Lloyd, and son Terry, Busse have 15 or so deer to process at their locker plant. A large than usual amount of hunters filed out this unlike preceding years, including Tim Galles, Larry Weber, Steve Galigan, Kris Alesch & Tim Erdman.
William Wolken of Granville passed away at Heritage House in Orange City at the age of 96 years and 2 months after an extended illness.
Lloyd Jorgensen, 59, long time Marcus resident, passed away December 5 at a Storm Lake hospital after a short illness.
Greyhound bus Lines has been granted permission by the state of Iowa Department of Transportation to increase it’s bus passenger fares by 12 percent.

Mrs. John Reimers attended the funeral of Charlotte Andersen at the St. Johns Lutheran Church in LeMars.
Two Marcus grads lead the state volleyball serving percentage The state leader in 1977 was Sandy Goth with 99% serving and an MHS student led also in 1978 Sue Ogren served 100% in 1978.
30 Years Ago – 1991
Keith and Diane Grage and family, Marcus, IA have been elected to membership in the American Angus Association.
25 Years Ago – 1996
Wendy Rainboth, a senior majoring in elementary education, is serving as a cottage manager for the 1996-97 school year at Northwestern College in Orange City, IA.
Merlin & Lillian Garvin were Thursday afternoon visitors of Viola Barry at Heartland Care Center.
Tuesday afternoon Ladies Bowling League: High Individual Game: Elvera Specht 186; High Individual Series: Elvera Specht 506; Most pins over average: Bettye Pallesen, 51.
Eagle basketball boys “Squaqsh” Hinton, 76-49. High scorers were Josh Engebretson 23, Joel Ehrig 20, & Mike Hueser 17.

Charlotte Barnes of Marcus was a Sunday evening guests in the Bob & Elvera Specht home.
MMC’s Speech Team win their third consecutive Sweepstakes Trophy at the Indian Speech Tournament. First place winners were Kate Juhl, Ross Peterson, and Zach Wilcox.
Mr. & Mrs. Ken Ogren announced the engagement of their son, David, to Malina Earl, of Tucson, AZ. An April 13, 2002 wedding in Marcus is planned.
15 Years Ago – 2006
