125 Years Ago – 1896
Ed Garnett has purchased the Marcus Opera House and is doing some repair work on it.
Ben Delamey has disposed of his confectionary stand. It was moved to the Poulson Building.
One hundred train tickets were sold to Marcus people who wanted to attend the funeral of Mrs. A.H. Dwight, formerly of Marcus. She was born Susan Kepner in Perry County, PA, and came to Marcus in 1872. She was living in LeMars with her son and services and burial were held there.
120 Years Ago – 1901
Joe Schoenfelder of Marcus and Mary Otto of Larchwood were married were in ithe Catholic Church there and they will make their home in Larchwood.
It is a splendid fall for farm work. Plowing was made easier by an abundance of moisture. It has furnished grass and green pastures for livestock for feed.
115 Years Ago – 1906
R.B. and J.W. Holmes sold their butcher shop in Marcus to Mr. Norton of Ida Grove.
Mrs. Tierney, landlady of the New Brunswick Hotel at LeMars visited her sister, Mrs. D. S. Norris, here, who is being treated in the Loomis Hospital.
Mr. and Mrs. Ben Delaney are the parents of a son born Sunday.
105 Years Ago – 1916
Mr. and Mrs. John Jungers celebrated 60 happy years of marriage Oct. 3. He is 85 and she is 77. They were natives of Belgium and came to Marcus in 1876, the “grasshopper” year. Land was selling for $3.50 to $4.00 per acre.
Eugene Simons of Amherst Twp. dug 80 bushels of potatoes from one patch.
Delmer and Frankie Ducommun of Cleghorn were absent from school two afternoons as they helped pick up potatoes.
95 Years Ago – 1926
Peters Bros. purchased a plot of ground from J.F. Collins west ot the Illinois Central water tower. They will build a 40X75 building there for a new warehouse.
Martha Bork, teacher at Marcus #1, 5 miles north and 2 miles east of Marcus, will hold a basket social and program Wednesday, October 20. Harold Toner will be the auctioneer.
Miss Helen Niemann has completed a course in watch making and has accepted a position in a Jewelry store in Vinton, IA.
J.A. Michaelson purchased the new bungalow built by Gus Hadel for $6,500. Mr. Michaelson came here about 4 years ago and is in the grocery business
90 Years Ago – 1931
Maurice Chevalier and Claudette Colbert star in “The Smiling Lieutenant” showing in the Lyric here for 3 nights.
Ruth Rosburg and Alfred Nitzschke were married Wednesday afternoon, October 7, in St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Remsen. After a wedding trip to Omaha, they will make their home on a farm south of Marcus. Ruth graduated from Marcus High in 1927 and has been teaching in Public Schools in Cherokee and Plymouth Counties.
Mr. and Mrs. Simon Zembsch of Cherokee visited in the W.G. Pitts home in Marcus Sunday afternoon.
85 Years Ago -1936
Carl Sagness has been advanced to math and science teacher in Marcus High School. Miss Doris Dunham of Early will replace him as Junior High Principal. She has 10 years of experience.
Marcus football team defeated Paullina there 39-2.
Ruth Simons of Sioux City was a Saturday overnight guest in the home of her brother, Donald Simons.
80 Years Ago – 1941
Fanchion Anderson of Marcus, who is attending Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, has been chosen as a member of the Woman’s Chorus.
Ronald Ogren, 4 month old son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Ogren of Amherst, underwent surgery and was hospitalized for ten days.
Tyrone Powers stars in “A Yank in the R.A. F.” with Betty Grable, showing in the American Theatre in Cherokee.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rassel are the parents of a 10 pound son born Monday, October 13 and named Thomas Robert.
75 Years Ago -1946
Elmer Bjornstad arrived via plane from LaJolla, CA to begin teaching vocal and instrumental music in the Marcus Public School. He was recently discharged from the U. S. Navy. He had taught in 1941 and 1942 in Marcus.
The temperature fell to 25 degrees Saturday morning and was the first killing frost of the season.
Mrs. Merle Sand was honored on her birthday when twenty-five ladies joined her for a handkerchief shower Wednesday aternoon. They enjoyed an afternoon of Bingo, and a dainty lunch.
70 Years Ago – 1951
Jackie Nicholson, a student at Iowa State College at Ames, spent the weekend visiting with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Don Nicholson in Struble and with Mr. and Mrs. John Sand and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Dunn in Marcus.
Lois Jean Weber of Marcus and Joseph Even of Alton are planning a November 3rd wedding in Marcus Holy Name Church.
65 Years Ago – 1956
The Marcus voters passed the Swimming Pool Bond Issue by 76%. There were 554 people voting with 415 approving it.
Mrs. W.L. Gund returned home after spending a few days with Miss Edna Gund in Lincoln, NE.
Carl Emil Anderson, 74, passed away October 3. Funeral services were held in the Nelson Funeral home with burial in Marcus- Amherst Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, 7 daughters, 3 sons and a sister.
Pvt. Gilbert Ducommun, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ducommun of Cleghorn, is home on a furlough after completing basic training at Fort Chaffee, AR. He will return there for eight weeks of specialized training.
60 Years Ago – 1961
The Marcus Community High School band returned home after winning first place at the annual Westmar band day in LeMars, with Barbara Johnson as majorette.
A group of children and their mothers gathered in the Warren Weber home last week to help Greg and Pam Weber celebrate their birthdays.

55 Years Ago – 1966
The Marcus Eagles won their Homecoming football game 44-13 over Sergeant Bluff. Senior half back, Mike Schmillen scored 5 touchdowns.
Three businesses and two families were left homeless when fire destroyed the Corner Cafe and Irma’s Beauty Shop and the Garvin Uphostery and Furniture repair shop Friday evening. Both families lived above their shops. Dick Edwards rescued their infant daughter who was sleeping upstairs.
Dale Johnson and Nancy Fischer reigned as King and Queen of MHS Homecoming.
50 Years Ago – 1971
The Marcus Junior High football team remains undefeated as they beat Floyd Valley 32-0. Quarterback Addy passed to Weber and Leavitt for 2 touchdowns and Addy scored the other 3 on runs.
Meriden-Cleghorn stands at the top of the Little Sioux Conference Football race with a 5-0 record. Marcus is 4th with a 3-2 record. The News reported that the Marcus Eagles did not show any sparks of life in their Homecoming game with Hinton. Marcus was defeated 20-14.
Charles McConnell, 17, son of former Marcus resident, Howard McConnell and his wif with his teacher, will fly to Washington, D.C. They will have tea with Mrs. Richard Nixon. Charles is the only male student in the HERO program. They attend a half day of school and spend the other half working in a job related to Home Economics.
45 Years Ago – 1976
Mr. and Mrs. Ray Lauters returned from a 17 day bus tour of Nova Scotia, Canada and New England.
Dennis Green, a 1969 graduate of Meriden-Cleghorn and a 1976 graduate of Creighton University School of Law, has opened an office in Cleghorn. He also has an office in Cherokee and plans to spend 2 afternoons a week in Cleghorn.
A tour of the living History Farm near Des Moines is planned for October 26th. A $15 charge will get you the bus ride, visit to the farm and a catered dinner.
40 Years Ago – 1981
Rick Nielsen, assistant girls’ basketball coach at Meriden- Cleghorn, will be head coach as Lee Mohning resigned.
Vernon and Rita Letsche are the proud parents of an 8 lb. 3 oz. daughter, born October 9 and named Kristina Marie.
Bud and Mary Snyder are holding a public auction of their farm machinery Tuesday, October 27th at the farm northwest of Marcus.
35 Years Ago – 1986
Marie Hueser will be honored on her 90th birthday with a “Come and Go” open house Saturday, October 24 at Holy Name Hall.
Maureen Wheeler and Steven Roseland were united in marriage September 13 in Grace United Methodist Church in Marcus. They will make their home in Paullina where he is in the trucking business.
Mrs. Luke Norris was honored on October 15th as a 50 year member of the Marcus Woman’s Club. Mrs. L.J. McGivern and Mrs. Ray Niemann were both present as 61 year members.
30 Years Ago – 1991
Holly Hanson of Brandon, SD and Richard Theisen of Marcus were married recently in Marcus Holy Name Church. They will make their home in Sioux City.
Elmer and Lillian Sweet of Early were Saturday guests in the Verla Ehlers home in Cleghorn.
25 Years Ago – 1996
Max and Lorene Mugge hosted a birthday celebration for Edythe Mugge in their home Sunday evening. Brian and Carol Mugge and children joined in the fun.
MMC enrollment is 667 this year, 24 down from last year.
20 Years Ago – 2001
Enrollment at MMC this year is 611. According to Supt. Hart, that means a loss of $4,547 for each student lost.
