125 Years Ago – 1896
The three elevators in Marcus are receiving so much grain that the railroad cars cannot be obtained for shipping it. The elevators have an 80,000 bushel capacity and are full.
A wagon load of potatoes sold for 20¢ per bushel here Saturday.
Thirteen car loads of grain were shipped from here Sunday evening
120 Years Ago – 1901
Robert Black of LeMars petitioned our town for permission to build a bowling alley here. No action was taken on it.
An ordinance was drafted here prohibiting the erection of wooden or frame buildings on four blocks of Main Street and also, no more wooden sidewalks.
Granville Petty of Marcus and Miss Helen Gingrich of Vermillion, SD were married July 27. They have kept it a secret. He is a clerk in the G. M. Alvord Clothing Store.
115 Years Ago – 1906
Elle Ulstad of Marcus and Thomas Radcliffe of Chandler, MN were married in Marcus. They will make their home at Chandler where he is cashier in a bank.
The Marcus Telephone Company has 30 miles of country phone lines with 40 patrons.
105 Years Ago – 1916
Charlie Brown of Amherst and L.M. Miller received 20 premiums on their Percheron horses they exhibited at the Sioux City Fair last week.
R.E. Wing of Cleghorn found a tire missing from the rear of his auto, taken while it was parked north of C.W. Dorr Implement Office in Marcus.
Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Heline departed for Colorado to visit her parents. They are driving the new Ford they just purchased.
95 Years Ago – 1926
Miss Lillian Birch won the pearl ring offered by the American Legion Auxiliary for selling the most tickets to their play, “The Land of the Honeymoon”. She sold $72.35 worth of tickets.
The Marcus Eleven defeated Primghar on their field Friday 19-0. Booth raced a punt back 35 yards for a touchdown.
The 7th and 8th graders at Cleghorn organized an English Club with Dorothy McDaniel as president, Fanny Booth as secretary, Elaine Giebe, sergeant and Dorothy Oswald, librarian.
Billy Kirchoff, 9 year old gardener, raised a sweet potato this summer that weighed 2 lbs.
90 Years Ago – 1931
Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Treinen drove to Akron Sunday to visit in the John Earnest home. Mr. and Mrs. George Kramer of Remsen joined them and they all enjoyed a picnic at the State Park in Hawarden.
Mr. and Mrs. Ray Niemann are the parents of a son born Friday, named Joseph.
Miss Ruth Rosburg, bride-elect of Alfred Nitzschke, was honored at a pre-nuptial shower held in the Legion Hall Saturday. The guests hemmed tea towels and presented her with kitchen utensils.
85 Years Ago -1936
M.C. Evans, 77, passed way Wednesday morning, October 7. Services were held in Holy Name Church with burial in the church cemetery. Survivors include his wife, 2 daughters and 4 sons.
Marcus Golden Eagles defeated the East Sioux City Reserves 7-6 here last Friday. The Eagles are playing good football.
80 Years Ago – 1941
Carl and Vernon Grauer and Billy and Dean Berger motored to Omaha Saturday where they entered calves at the Ak-Sar-Ban show there.
Rev. and Mrs. Fremont Faul moved into the Methodist parsonage this week. Two of their children, Hope and Duane, attend Morningside College. Jean is a sophomore at Marcus Public and Faith is at home.
75 Years Ago -1946
Beverly Anderson and Leon Ebert were named Queen and King of Marcus Public School Homecoming. The local football squad defeated Aurelia 7-6 in the homecoming game.
Mabel King of Marcus and Ronald Durreet of Paducah, KY were married Sept. 24 at Cincinnati, Ohio where they will reside.
Bette Davis and Glenn Ford star in “A Stolen Life” showing in the Lyric Theatre here.
Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Bjornstad of La Jolla, CA are the parents of an 8 lb. 8 oz. son, born Sunday, Oct. 6 and named Timothy Lee.
70 Years Ago – 1951
Harry Weicht and Mabel Nielsen were elected King and Queen of Marcus Public Homecoming. The Eagles defeated Peterson 7-6 in the football game. Lloyd Brown took the ball in for a TD after Marv Simons caught a short pass and lugged it 60 yards to the Peterson 20 yard line.
Wilfred Gill was admitted to the Iowa Bar at Des Moines Friday, Oct. 6. He received his law degree last June from Notre Dame. He is a 1940 graduate of Marcus Public High School.
65 Years Ago – 1956
Nile Eberly, Leland Hogue, Fred Hoover and Roger Leavitt, Jr. departed Saturday evening for a few days fishing in Canada.
The voters of the incorporated town of Marcus will go to the polls Monday, Oct. 15 to vote on the proposition of issuing $45,000 worth of municipal bonds for the purpose of constructing a swimming pool.
Mrs. Duane Bork of Sioux Falls was honored at a post-nuptial shower Sunday, Oct. 7th in the Marcus Municipal building. It was hosted by relatives and neighbors of the Bork family.
60 Years Ago – 1961
Candidates for Marcus Public Homecoming are Phil Letsche & Marty Anderson for king and Linda Ehrp and Sharon Rainboth for queen.
The annual Marcus Firemen’s Ball will be held Tuesday, Oct. 17 in Holy Name Gym with music by Jimmy Smith’s Band.
55 Years Ago – 1966
Mike Hoover celebrated his 20th birthday Thursday evening. He is still in a body cast and confined to bed due to injuries received in a car-cycle accident several weeks ago.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Shea are the parents of a 7 lb. 7 oz. daughter born Thursday, Oct 6th. She is named Ann Colleen and has a brother and a sister at home.
50 Years Ago – 1971
Don Frederes and Glen Norris have opened a body shop in the Dale Lynn building on Marcus Main Street.
Mr. and Mrs. Donald Gray spent the weekend with their son, Darrell, at Kirkwood, MO who is a student at Northwest Missouri State College. He is working for a Master’s Degree in Social Studies as well as a Certificate in Law Enforcement.
45 Years Ago – 1976
Marcus High School sophomore class has two new students, Carla Stodden, of Marcus and Brian Barlat of Ohio. Carla has been going to school at Iowa City and Coralville.
Sandy Goth shared slides and souvenirs of her trip to Spain with the Spanish students.
Mrs. Dale Bork reports that the dedication of the Braille Press at Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus will be held Sunday, Oct. 24th at 3:00 p.m.
40 Years Ago – 1981
Miss Ginger Ann Treptow of Tempe, AZ is being honored for 25 years of service with the Frontier Air Service. She is a former Marcus and Cleghorn resident. She is now the Customer Service Supervisor and hopes to spend many more years with the Air Line.
Relatives gathered in the Tom and Doris Dawson home at Washta Sunday evening to help their son, David, celebrate his 8th birthday.
The Marcus all high school musical, “The Music Man” will be presented November 21. Alan Hesse will play Harold Hill and Marilyn Braun will be Marion Paroo.
35 Years Ago – 1986
Gentry Berger and Kandi Petersen were crowned King and Queen of Marcus Community High School Homecoming.
Bob Meylor led the state last year as a junior with 14.8 rebounds per game in Class A. Team mate Tom Bies tied for 10th spot in Class scoring with 23 points per game.
Melanie Rassel of Cleghorn and David Erickson of Meriden are planning a December 27th wedding.
30 Years Ago – 1991
When Bonnie Simons Collins arose on her 40th birthday, she found 40 black balloons attached to their front porch.
Steven Schachterle, D.C. of Marcus attended the Fall Seminar of the Iowa Chiropractic Society this past weekend in Ames.
Brian Lunders and Deanna Henke were chosen King and Queen of MMC Homecoming. The Eagles defeated West Sioux 14-7 in the homecoming game.
25 Years Ago – 1996
The MMC National Honor Society elected Mike Hueser as their president, Brenda Bird as vice-president and Dunny LoVan as historian. Their first service project will be a tissue drive, asking all students to bring a box of tissues to school to distribute to all of the classes for all students to use.
October 6-12 is Fire Prevention Week and we honor our local Volunteer Firemen this week and every week of the year.
The MMC Eagles got their 2nd win of the season with an 11-8 win over Rockwell City-Lytton.
20 Years Ago – 2001
Eric and Carol Nelson are pleased to announce the birth of a 7 lb. 2 oz. daughter, born Sept. 14 and named Sarah Margaret. She was welcomed home by four brothers, Mark, Matt, John and Paul.
Laura Theisen of Marcus and Gerad Lukken of Salix are planning an October 20th wedding in Nativity Catholic Church at Sioux City.
Becky and Richard Geerdes, the MMC middle school and the American Red Cross are conducting a gift and toy drive for the families of the victims of the recent terrorist attacks. The gifts and toys collected will be sent to New York in early December and distributed to those affected by the tragedy.
