From the Marcus Library
It’s hard to believe October is already here! We have some great events coming up in October at the Marcus Library, and invite you to gather with us.
October 6 from 10:00 – 11:30 am, our Friends of the Library group will be hosting a ‘meet and greet’ in the library. Stop by to learn more about this foundation, visit with the members, and find out what you can do to help support our library and literacy in our community.
On October 7 at 6:00 pm, nationally-known historian and re-enactor Kevin Wood will be joining us to present a program on Abraham Lincoln. We’ve tried to schedule Mr. Wood in the past, and he’s usually not over on our side of the state, so don’t miss this opportunity to see a truly superior presentation on our of our nation’s most influential citizens. This program is suitable for adults as well as families with older children and you’ll enjoy watching Abraham Lincoln come to life.
The following week, October 14 at 6:30 PM, Iowa’s celebrated Poet Laureate Debra Marquart will be sharing some of her work with us. It is truly an honor to host her at our library, and we’ll be kicking off a ‘poetry series’ with her program, celebrating all forms of poetry and song in our world in the months to come.
Our Friends of the Library group will be passing out Halloween treats during Marcus’ Trick or Treat at the library from 3:30 to 5:00 pm on October 29, so please stop by with your little ones!
We’re also excited to showcase some new items at the library—“Wonderbooks” are physical children’s books that also include a built-in audio component, so your child can listen to the story read to them, read along with the narrator, or read independently. These are lots of fun, and we’ve been able to purchase a number of them thanks to an ARPA grant, so stop in and choose a few to borrow! Everyone loves to listen to a story, and even older kids and adults enjoy these titles.
E-book and e-audio circulation continues to be a popular way to enjoy titles. Our library belongs to the Bridges Consortium of Iowa libraries, and there are thousands of titles to choose from. All you need is your library account in good standing (not expired or carrying overdue fines). Open the app or Overdrive website, input your library, your account number, and you’re all set! If you have a newer phone or tablet, you will find that the Libby app is now the best-supported and easiest to use, so if you’re using the Overdrive app and having trouble, switch to Libby and see if that solves the problem. If you have questions, call or stop by the library.
Stop by and ‘check out’ all that your library has to offer!
