125 Years Ago – 1896
Louis Ducommun moved his family from his farm near Cleghorn to Marcus last week. Joe Donner and his family are at home in Marcus. John Bobel rented the Capt. Dixson farm and is now in residence there.
G. Edward Jones, attorney law, and his parents are comfortably settled in their new home in Marcus. G. Edward has opened an office over Thompson’s furniture store.
110 Years Ago – 1901
William A. Fenton negotiated the sale of the Cottingham estate of 320 acres in Tilden Township Henry F. Kielhorn of Plymouth County purchased said estate for $50 an acre.
J.O. Payne of Sheldon closed the deal to erect a residence for B. Radcliffe here. He also received the contract to erect a fine brick structure, 50’ front by 100’ deep and two stories high: on the lots north of the News Office.
Mr. and Mrs. C. Flanagan are the proud parents of a baby girl born Feb. 25.
115 Years Ago – 1906
Joe Bird and Johnnie Anderson departed for Canada where they hope to get a slice of the King’s domain. They are good men and will succeed.
Marcus Independent School District held its election Monday. One hundred thirty-six votes were cast, with F.S. Barnes elected as treasurer and B. Radcliffe and M.C. Evans chosen as directors.
105 Years Ago – 1916
Arno J. Lenth, employee of A.B. Olson’s blacksmith shop for the past five years, was married to Matilda Winterheud on March 15. The marriage was held in Sioux City. Matilda is the daughter of Mrs. John Winterheud of LeMars.
Mrs. E.E. Gearon well known and esteemed resident of Marcus passed away March 12 at her home in the east part of Marcus.
The marriage of Vincentia Collins, daughter of Mrs. Elizabeth Collins, and James Cronin, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Cronin, Sr. of Oregon took place at Holy Name Church in Marcus, Mar. 1 with Rev. E. O’Reilly officiating.
95 Years Ago – 1926
William Day of Morningside sold his farm in this vicinity for $18.5O per acre.
O.W. Challman is erecting a 26×31 corn crib on his farm in Tilden Township.
Funeral services for Mrs. M.Y. Ames. who passed away Mar. 2, were held at the Church of Christ Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Ames died one month after her husband.
90 Years Ago – 1931
The four barber shops in Marcus have slashed the price of haircuts from 50 cents to 35 cents.
Frank Lawhead has added a new foundation and basement to his property at 210 W. Pine. A new porch will be added and the home modernized.
Sixty-three feet of good water were found on the Roy Oswald farm north of Cleghorn after the men drilled 222 feet.
Sjostrom Bros. Inc, a creamery plant in Marcus began operating recently and made 2,000 lbs. of butter the first day.
85 Years Ago -1936
The town f Marcus was awarded a grant of $57,OQQ for street improvements by the P.W.A. in a Senate hearing in Washington, D.C. The estimated cost of the work is $10,000.
Mr. and Mrs. Leon Mitchell of rural Cleghorn are the parents of a son born Thursday, Mar. 5.
Loretta Garvin’s brother, Thomas A. Garvin, passed away Feb. 10 in a Seattle, Wash., hospital.
The long awaited Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movie, “Follow the Fleet”, is coming to the Orpheum Theatre in Sioux City Mar. 13.
Lois Bark, daughter of-Louis Bork, and George Briggs, son of Mr. and Mrs. Otis Briggs, were united in marriage recently.
80 Years Ago – 1941
Ed Keleher was awarded the contract to install new plumbing throughout Holy Name School. Twenty-nine men volunteered to help tear out the floor and it was completed in less than an hour.
Mr. and Mrs. John Apel are the proud parents of 7 1/2 lb. daughter born Saturday, Mar. 1, named Mary Christine.
Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Barnes have received word that their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Wittkamp, have been transferred from Cedar Rapids to Davenport. He is assistant manager of the Woolworth store in Davenport.
75 Years Ago -1946
Wilfred Gill has accepted a secretarial position with Attorney, L.J. McGivern. Wilfred plans to enter college in the fall to study law.
Lee Barnes, ARM2/c. was discharged from the Navy March 8 at Jacksonville, Fl., after 26 months in the service. He plans to begin farming on one of his father’s farms five miles south of town.
The Reynolds brothers moved from the Al Bork home to farm near Cleghorn. Leo Franck moved into the Bork home.
Betty Seggerman visited with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harm Seggerman, and returned to Sioux City where she is attending a school of nursing.
70 Years Ago – 1951
The cattle and hog barns on the farm tenanted by Gunnard Johnson 14 miles south and one mile west of Marcus were destroyed by fire about 10 p.m. Wednesday. Sixteen head of brood sows and 150 spring pigs were destroyed; total damage about $6,000. Frank Mattoon of, Los Angeles, Calif., is the owner of the property.
About 20” of snow fell here from Sunday until Tuesday that paralyzed midwest traffic and closed schools.
Vernon Means has reopened the Standard Oil Station here at the north end of Main Street, operated recently by Jake Dixson.
Word has been received that Harold Wood is seriously ill with a heart condition. He had just retired this past year after serving as school superintendent here for 25 years.
65 Years Ago -1956
Mrs. W.L. Gund and George Scott have filed for reelection, to the Marcus school board. Mrs. Lyle Schlenger and Elmore Wallin have also filed for those two seats.
Bud Bork has opened the service station adjacent to the East Side Tavern in Marcus and, is handling Skelly and D-X products.
60 Years Ago – 1961
Robert Kelly of LeMars, who was a prisoner of war in World War II of the Japanese for nearly four years, told of his experiences at the Marcus Rotary Club meeting. His weight dropped to /5 pounds and with the help of Red Cross packages he gained to 110 lbs.
Mr. and Mrs. James Lindsay moved into the Sunset Hill home which they recently purchased from John Dunn.
55 Years Ago – 1966
Herman Fischer purchased the Gamble Store here from Carl Boots and will take over about May 1.
J.B. and R.B. Snyder purchased Olsen’s Tap in Marcus for $8,000 at auction Mar. 11.
Hildas Cafe in Cleghorn will sell fixtures and equipment at auction Sunday, Mar. 13.
Mrs. Bus Jenness won $100 in Marcus Money last Friday night. Four $25 prizes will be offered next Friday night.1
50 Years Ago – 1971
Kathy Bird, Bob Leavitt, Laurie Treinen, and Marlene Wailer were elected as Outstanding Teenagers of America of 1971. Mr. David Bride nominated nine young people and these four were selected.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur T. Hohbach are the parents of a third son, John Wilbur, born Wednesday, Feb. 17, weighing 8 lbs.
John Biezuns of Cleghorn and Sharon Potach were united in marriage at the Evangelical Free Church in Bloomington, MN. They are spending their honeymoon in Hawaii.
45 Years Ago – 1976
Mike Husman and Steve Stodden had the best records on the Marcus wrestling team. Mike had a 25-5 record and Steve 18-2.
Marcus Eagles downed the state #1 ranked team, the Alta Cyclones, 54-53 and will advance to sub-state. Scott Bork scored 19 points and Jerry Fischer 18.
T.Sgt. Kenneth Roberson departed for a year’s tour of duty in Alaska. His wife and children will remain in their home at Summersville, S.C.
40 Years Ago – 1981
Carla Gengler of Remsen and John Weber of Marcus are planning a July 11 wedding at St. Mary’s, Remsen.
Craig Goth, son of Adrian and Helen Goth, is featured in the Senior Spotlight in the Cleghorn news. Craig works at Sioux Valley Hospital on weekends and intends to continue his studies in the field of Emergency Care.
35 Years Ago – 1986
Marcus Eagles were defeated in a double overtime duel by Graettinger, Tim Bies, Scott Rupp, James Fischer, and Tom Bies ended their high school careers.
