The Lady Royals started off their volleyball season with a win Tuesday against the Tigers of Trinity Christian. Last season the Royals finished 3rd in the War Eagle Conference going 22-6 (7-3 Conf). The Royals return a lot of starters this season, including six Seniors, all with a large amount of playing time in the past three years.
The Royals did not hold back on Tuesday. With a loud crowd behind them in Remsen, the Royals took the first set by a score of 25-10. Senior Kirsten Letsche said that the offense moved well on Tuesday. ¨We really moved around the floor well as a team, and we read what the defense was doing.¨ In the second set the Tigers found some new life. Trinity’s Jamie Kooima put up 6 assists and 12 digs for the Tigers, but the Royals took care of business winning it 25-19. The 3rd set the Royals looked a little sloppy, allowing Trinity to score 21 points. That still couldn’t top the hard hitting Royals front line. SR Emily Dreckman led the way for the Royals, racking up 14 kills in the season opener. SR Kirsten Letsche dominated in the assist department, bringing in a huge 17 assists. It was also a big night for SR Regan Peters, scoring 3 aces, and 18 serve successes.
The Royals also took down Kingsley-Pierson Thursday night, by a score of 3 sets to 1. This year the Royals will be looking to make a state championship, after losing the 1A Region Championship last season to Gehlen Catholic. The Royals will have a rematch against the Jays during the month of October, and will likely see them again in the postseason.
