Obituary – Henry Vogelman

Henry Vogelman, 91, of Greene, passed away, Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at the Rehabilitation Center of Allison. Woodley Funeral Home and Crematory of Greene is caring for Henry and his family. A Celebration of Life will be held 2:00 p.m., Sunday, May 3, at the RRMR HS gymnasium in Rockford. A reception and time of sharing will follow in the school lunch room. Those wishing to send an expression of support to the family are encouraged to consider a donation the to 1st United Methodist Church Window Fund or the Marble Rock First Responders in his memory.
Henry Frederick Vogelman was born April 29, 1934, in Philadelphia, PA, son of Henry Bernard and Vera June (Wagner) Vogelman. He was educated at Northeast High School, an all-boys school in Philadelphia. He played semi-pro football for his father on a team called the Vanango Bears.
Hank enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1954, serving in Korea. After his service he followed his old coach to ISU and was a member of the ‘Dirty 30’. He finished his BA degree and while there he met Joyce Branson. They were married April 1, 1961, in Waterloo.
Mr. Vogelman began his teaching career in Marcus, then Denison, Iowa. In 1970 he began teaching and coaching at Rockford. He taught physical education and driver’s ed until retiring in 1997. He continued to substitute and teach driver’s ed for several years.
While coaching he was known for ‘Give Me 10’ from his athletes. He truly loved what he did and remembered everyone’s name, at least by their last name.
In the summers his family would spend several weeks on the Jersey shore with family. They would spend time In Iowa each year as well, keeping the family close knit.
Hank was known for shenanigans during homecoming, often spraying water on people TP’ing his house, one night he tackled the principal as he was trying to catch students in the act.
As a member of the Marine Corp Detachment League in North Iowa, Hank served as commandant of the local detachment and at the state level. He presented many Eagle Scout awards, including one to his grandson. He was also an active member of the Rockford American Legion.
Henry is remembered by his children: Linda (Mark) Vogelman-Cleveland, and son Mark Henry Cleveland; Henry Joseph Vogelman, and children Henry Donald and Julianna Joyce; June Belle Vogelman, and son David Crow; brother-in-law: Lindley (Connie) Branson; sister-in-law: Karen Branson; and many family members on the east coast.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Vera June, wife, Joyce in 2024, sister, Sharon Stretz.
Hank’s family would like to extend a special thanks to those who helped care for him in recent years including Vicki Grimm, Dan Dow and his friend Karen, Conni Lenehan and her daughter Lyndsey and Floyd County Public Health caregivers Brenda, Hazel and Sarah. Also to Sue Ebensberger and her colleagues at West Forty for the countless deliveries to his home. Matt who was the barber who came to his home to cut his hair, and Greene Ambulance crew, and Marble Rock First Responders.
