110 Years Ago – 1916
A funeral of Mrs. Sarah Bass was held at the Methodist church on Friday, February 18 Rev. J.W. Sumerville of Wichita, Kansas delivered the sermon.
Harry Roberts, who for some time now has been employed at the S.B. Johnson barber shop, resigned his position a short time ago and made arrangements to open up a shop in one of the rooms in the basement of the Exchange Bank Building.
100 Years Ago – 1926
Mr. & Mrs. C.E. Brownfield and family have decided to return to their former home, Ethan, South Dakota, after six months residence here. Mr. Brownfield will resume his position as manager of the telephone exchange at Ethan.
Mrs. Arnold Naffziger, who had been spending the winter in Florida, completely surprised her mother, Mrs. Alice Thompson, when she walked into her home Monday.
A meeting of the board of education was held Tuesday morning at which time J.A. Steen, who plans to move to Seattle, resigned. C.W. Brower was appointed to fill the vacancy until the annual meeting.
95 Years Ago -1931
A very sad death occurred Monday in the Sioux Valley Hospital at Cherokee when Mrs. Peter Miller, nee Haily Hoops, died following a major surgical operation.
William Treptow, 45, truck driver for the Marcus Oil Company, met death almost instantly Monday morning about 9 o’clock on the highway No. 5 five miles south of Marcus trying to avoid a serious accident with an approaching car.
90 Years Ago -1936
Mrs. Susan Lehnhoff, 65, of Cherokee, and sister of Frank. Will and Matt Schmillen, died suddenly at the home of her sister, Mrs. S.A. Smorawski, in Tilen Township on Saturday.
Approximately one hundred men from Marcus and other towns of the county were employed Monday and Tuesday removing snow from the Illinois Central track two miles west of Marcus. The east bound passenger train scheduled to arrive in the morning became stalled in the cut west of Marcus and was stalled there until last Monday in the night.
85 Years Ago -1941
William Reichmann of Rock Rapids spoke before the Rotary Club and guests at the regular meeting Tuesday evening.
Jean Vernell Smith, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Norman Smith, has passed the test at the American Institute of Business at Des Moines, which admits her to the 60 Universal Club.
C.H. Flanagan has been confined to his home since Sunday due to a fall on icy sidewalks. Several ribs were broken and a shoulder injury as a result of the fall.
Friends and relatives gathered in the Edmonds home in Marcus Saturday to pay their last respects to Ira Edmonds who passed away at the Lutheran hospital in Sioux City on February 11. He has been ill about seven months.
Mrs. N.T. Wells observed her 90th birthday Wednesday, thus passing another milestone on a path of life. Many friends remembered her on this day.
80 Years Ago – 1946
A.A. Schmillen of Marcus will again head activities of the Cherokee County Rural Electric Cooperative as the result of the election to the presidency of the board at a meeting held Monday evening.
Floyd Grauer, Charles Krekow Allan Grauer and Carl Dorr attended the Golden Gloves amateur boxing tournament held at the Shrine Auditorium in Sioux City.
Mrs. James Brady was pleasantly surprised Thursday afternoon when thirty-five ladies called in her home to honor her on her birthday.
Ray Muehl of the Marcus Grocery this week announces that they will handle pasteurized milk through the grocery starting the first of March.
Mrs. Ellis Holmes and Mrs. Forrest Booth were Monday afternoon callers in the Frank Nacke, Jr. home at Remsen.
75 Years Ago -1951
Mr. & Mrs. Carl Heesch received a letter for their son Lavern in Korea asking them to extend his hearty thanks to the Marcus folks who remembered him with letters Christmas cards and packages.
A 78 year old Pella resident received fatal burns when his trailer home caught fire during the evening. Dirk Van Zee was found by neighbors on their return from town.
Don Peters, son of Mr. & Mrs. Ray Peters of Marcus, has been selected as one of twenty-eight popularity contest entrants for the Old Gold yearbook.
Mrs. Stanley Smith entertained Arg-U-Not Club in her home last Friday evening. Following a social evening of bridge, a delicious lunch was served by the hostess.
Due to bad weather on Lawrence Welk’s previous engagement, the Cobblestone in Storm Lake is fortunate in being able to bring tis great name band attraction back on Monday, February 19th.
70 Years Ago -1956
A 6 lb. 15 ½ oz. Son has born Wednesday, February 22, to Mr. & Mrs. Garland Hohbach at Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars. The new arrival has been named Kenneth Wayne.
Every day is laundry day, says Mrs. Ray Bails of Stanwood. She does about 25 machine loads each week. She’s the mother of 14 children.
A welcome home birthday party was held Sunday at the Merle Cave home honoring Mrs. Cave who returned home after a months visit in Oregon and California.
Funeral services for Mrs. Edna Rae of Marcus were held Friday, February 10 in the Carmel Lutheran Church in Marcus.
Percy Means and John Leavitt attended the Nebraska State Lumbermen’s Convention in Omaha Wednesday and Thursday.
65 Years Ago -1961
Winter first blizzard arrived here last Friday night, dumping about ten inches of snow in the community and piling it up in drifts.
William Watters of Garden Grove died recently at the age of 103. His wife died 50 years ago and he has lived with his daughter ever since.
Kimber Variety of Marcus will be held a grand opening in its new quarters this Saturday with many special prizes and $300 worth of door prizes as special attractions.
Mrs. Earl Test and the Home Economics girls number two, had the faculty and the school board members and their wives as dinner guests Thursday evening.
Kandice Strayer of rural swea City has never had her hair cut and it now measures 33 inches long.

Ruth Circle of Faith Lutheran Church met Wednesday, February 16, in the home of Mrs. Clarence Pearson with ten members present.
Mrs. Merle Weicht returned home Sunday evening from Clarion where she had been called by the death of her brother-in-law, James Killius.
Mr. & Mrs. Roni Loucks of Cherokee are the parents of a 7lbs 2oz son, born Monday, February 21 at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee. The new arrival has been named Donald.
Dale Johnson of the Marcus school won the 85 pound class in the district wrestling tournament at Audubon Saturday.
Sunday dinner guests in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Edgar Roseen honoring Brian on his birthday were Mr. & Mrs. Vernon Green and family and Mr. & Mrs. Clair Green all of Cherokee.
55 Years Ago – 1971
Richard Kuehn, son of Mr. & Mrs. Carroll Kuehn of Marcus, has been accepted for admittance to the College of Medicine at the University of Iowa in Iowa City for September.
One hundred and twenty-five mothers and daughters were served a banquet in the dining room of Grace United Methodist Church.
Harold Schlenger was taken to Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee by the Marcus Rescue Unit on Tuesday of last wee. Mr. Schlenger suffered a broken leg, above the ankle, in a fall at his home.
John Theodore Heline, 88, passed away Monday, February 15, at his home in Oceanside, CA.
Mr. & Mrs. John Clarkson returned home from a two week vacation spent in the Jim Clarkson and Michael Clarkson home in Phoenix.
50 Years Ago -1976
Mr. & Mrs. Delbert Joslin have received word of the death of Mrs. Joslin’s brother, Loren Hoover of Kokomo, Ind.
Jon Mitts, superintendent, is a patient at Sioux Valley Memorial hospital in Cherokee. Jon was hospitalized with an ulcer condition and is getting along as well as can be expected.
The Marcus In (formerly I-Go-Inn) is now open and ready for business.
Mrs. Bessie Williams, 87, of Primghar, IA died Saturday, February 14 at the Primghar Hospital after a lingering illness. She lived most of her life in the Marcus Primghar area.
Mike Schwarz, Mike Huseman and Steve Stodden received first place at sectionals which we held Monday and Tuesday in George.
45 Years Ago – 1981
Word was received by relatives of the death of harry Mason, Sr. 81, of San Francisco, CA.
Mr. & Mrs. Lester Kirchoff of Cleghorn will observe their Golden Wedding anniversary Sunday, February 22.
The Marcus Boy Scouts troop 113 will be sponsoring a hunter’s Safety course which starts Wednesday evening February 25.
Mrs. Elmer Schroeder, 65, Remsen, died Thursday, February 13 at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee after a brief illness.
Mrs. Ruth Rogness was named 1981 Woman of the Year by the Royal JayceeEttes.
