110 Years Ago – 1916
Moses Ames, one of the pioneer citizens of this section and one of the best known men in this county, died suddenly Wednesday afternoon. He was born in the barn of a neighbor. MR. Ames’s death is a shock to the community.
At the home of Mr. & Mrs. George Hopper, Pasadena, CA, a group of Marcus people met on January 23 for a social time. There were 10 people present and all departed not knowing whether these same 10 Marcus people would meet again so far from home.
100 Years Ago – 1926
Louis Seegar is announcing that he now has a partner and the firm will be hereafter known as Seeger and Seeger. Mr. Seeger’s only son, Bernard, is the junior Kielhorn, and Ruth Rosburg took 24 girls down to the skating rink for imitation into the Girls Honorary “M” Club.
95 Years Ago -1931
Lorne Parker, receiver of the Exchange Bank of Marcus recently returned from New York where he was called to testify in connection with the sale of stolen bonds.
Rev. E.L. Wittkopp, pastor of the Peace Lutheran Church at Ulmer has been called by the Lutheran Church at Marcsu and will move to that town in the near future. The Marcus congregation is one of the largest in the state.
90 Years Ago -1936
The funeral of William Walsh, who passed away last Thursday evening at the Sacred Heart Hospital evening at the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars, after a six week illness of pneumonia, was held Monday morning at the Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus.
John Apel, Commander of the F.I. Goodburn Post of the American Legion, has reported that approximately 65 of the ex-servicemen from this community have filed application for bonus bonds in Marcus.
The I.O.O.F. and Rebekah Lodges held a joint meeting at the American Legion Hall last Thursday evening at which the joint installation of officers took place.
85 Years Ago -1941
Mr. George Johnson and Howard Johnson were in Sioux City last Thursday attending a showing of the entire 1941 General Electric line of goods.
Mrs. C.W. Samuelson entered the Lutheran Hospital in Sioux City as a medical patient last Sunday evening.
The fire department answered two calls the past week. Saturday morning a chimney fire at the Walter Harvey home was the cause, and Sunday evening, it was a furnace explosion at the Homer Hush home.
Peter Miller, Sr. will hold a closing out sale on his farm four and half miles northwest of Marcus, next Thursday, February 13.
Mr. & Mrs. John Bindner left Tuesday morning for California and plan to be one about six weeks. They will visit with their daughter, Leona Bindner, in San Francisco.
80 Years Ago – 1946
Mrs. Frank McQueen’s Idle Hour Cafe opened up for business Monday of this week in the former Turner Building between Mac’s Place and the Satterlee Drug Store.
Mrs. Elmer Blietz was honored Monday of last week on her birthday when a group of relatives and friends gathered at her hoem to help her celebrate the event.
Mr. & Mrs. Werner Benson were pleasantly surprised by about 45 friends Tuesday evening of last week who called to honor them on their silver wedding anniversary.
Mr. & Mrs. Ivan Woodall honored their son, Wilmar, recently discharged after serving overseas in Europe, at a dinner Sunday evening.
Mrs. Susan Hoxsie was honored at her home by a birthday party Sunday afternoon. Seventeen ladies help her celebrate her 85th birthday by visiting and playing bingo.
75 Years Ago -1951
Mrs. Will Ament returned home on Saturday from the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars where she had been hospitalized for several weeks following a bad fall.
Dale Franck left Wednesday for Sioux City for service in the Army Air Corps. Dale enlisted two weeks ago and was sent home until called.
Friends and relatives gathered on Thursday evening in the Leonard Harms home to help celebrate the second birthday of little Miss Jackie Sue Harms.
Mr. & Mrs. Carl Klingborg, Karleen and David, were dinner guests Thursday evening in the Paul Ogren home to help them celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary.
Miss Joan Garlow, who left Saturday for CA, was surprised last Monday, January 22 at a farewell party in the home of Mrs. Harry Nelson.
70 Years Ago -1956
Thieves broke into the office of Sand’s Seed Service here Saturday night or early Sunday morning, making away with $112.69 in cash and $907.60 worth of checks.
Mr. & Mrs. Wilfred Husman announce the arrival of a daughter born Wednesday, February 1 at Sioux Valley Hospital. She weighed eight pounds, five and a half ounces, and has been named Karen Marie.
A group of friends and neighbors gathered at Holy Name Hall Monday evening, February 6 to honor Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Alesch at a farewell party.
John Sand, 64, of Marcus, died early Sunday morning in Phoenix, Arizona. He was a victim of leukemia and death following a long and courageous fight against the disease.
Mrs. Howard Peavy was hostess at a party Tuesday, January 31, at her home given in honor of Mrs. Mayme Peavy on her birthday.
65 Years Ago -1961
Don Sanow, an employee of Sand Seed Service, is nursing an injured right hand, which became entangled in a conveyor belt.
Mrs. Irene Droegmiller was the winner of the 30×50 throw rug given by Nagele’s Apparel Saturday evening.
Mrs. Andy Ballard returned home Sunday from Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars, where she had been a surgical patient.
Mr. & Mrs. Earl Carney and family moved last Wednesday to the farm vacated by Mr. & Mrs. Roy Bork, Mr. & Mrs. Bork have moved to the farm of the late Bill Miller of Cleghorn.
Dale Brady was honored at a birthday party Thursday evening at the home of his grandmother, Mrs. George Beaton. Ice Cream and cake were served at the close of the evening.
60 Years Ago -1966
Jane Dorr, Linda Ferrin, Dan Schlenger, and Mark Cline were chosen to participate in the Northwest Iowa Choral Fest at Cherokee.
Mr. & Mrs. John Stamer of Marcus are the parents of an 11 pound, four and a half ounce daughter born Sunday, January 30, at Orange City hospital. The new arrival has been named Brenda Sue and has two sisters and one brother.
Mr. & Mrs. Albert Bisland returned home Tuesday of last week from a two week vacation spent visiting relatives and friends in Santa Cruz and San Jose, California.
Mr. & Mrs Lloyd Barnes are spending the winter months at the Happy Siesta Retirement Home at Remsen.
Dale Patrick Schreier, infant son of Mr. & Mrs. Gib Schreier, was baptized Sunday of last week at Holy Name Catholic Church. A dinner was held in the Schreier home following the baptism.
55 Years Ago – 1971
Steve Hagey has arrived in Frankfort, Germany after spending a 30 day leave in the home of his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Robert Hagey.
The quartet of Marcus students, Dave Stodden, Jim Dunn, JoAnne Dunn, and Susan Nielsen, will be singing in the 11th annual Northwest Iowa Choral Fest.
Twenty speech students made a tape which was played by KCHE Sunday, February 7. The tape was made in school and sent to Cherokee. Mrs. Marie Schroeder had a surprise telephone call from her sister and brother from Bremen, Germany.
50 Years Ago -1976
Debbie Lauters has been named Marcus High School’s 1976 Betty Crocker Family Leader of Tomorrow. She is now eligible for the state and national honors.
Mrs. Bill Woodall is a surgical patient at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars.
Mr. & Mrs. Jerry Wurth and sons of LeMars and Mr. John Sand were Sunday breakfast and supper guests in the Bud Snyder home.
The Marcus JV girls ran their record to 8-1 as they defeated Remsen-Union here 41 to 24. Halftime score was 19-10.
Miss Kristi Petersen, an eighth grade student at Marcus Community School, earned one of the D.A.R. essay awards. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Petersen
45 Years Ago – 1981
Mr. & Mrs. Jim Alesch to Marcus will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary with a free dance at the Avalon Ballroom in Remsen on Friday, February 13.
Both the Marcus girls and boys basketball teams came up with easy victories Friday night at home; the girls winning by a score of 73 to 42 and he boys ending up with a big 83 to 41 margin.
Mr. & Mrs. Chester Wurth of Remsen are the proud parents of an eight pound, 15 ounce son born Wednesday, January 28 at the Orange City hospital. Grandparents are Mrs. Tillie Wurth of Remsen and Mr. & Mrs. Robert Snyder of Marcus.
Wilbur Shefstad is in good spirits after being admitted to the Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee on Sunday, February 1.
Laura Petersen was honored on her 90th birthday Friday evening. A beautiful decorated cake was made by Marilyn Kruse. Flowers and gifts made the evening a happy occasion.
