110 Years Ago – 1916
The old Catholic Church building which J.F. Collins purchased has been remodeled into an opera house and a hard maple floor put in for dancing.
In a letter to the Marcus News, Mr. & Mrs. Percy Miller, who are spending the winter in Los Angeles, write that they are enjoying the fine weather and have seen most of the Marcus people who are there for the winter.
The Edmonds-Londergan Co. Bank building is expected to be completed and ready for occupancy the first of March. The vacuum steam heating plant installed by Ed Keleher is working very satisfactorily and the plastering is completed.
Edwin and Esther Anderson of rural Marcus, are the parents of their first child, a son, born on January 25 at rural Marcus. He has been named Erwin Lyle.
100 Years Ago – 1926
Marcus showed its old fighting spirit with Anderson back at center and Baumann slipping back at center and defense for basket after basket, and won from Aurelia by a score of 30 – 72 Friday night
Born to Mr. & Mrs. Archie Nelson on December 17, a son. He has been named Theodore Ross.
Thursday morning at Holy Name Church the Rev. George Cooke officiated at the Requiem High Mass held for Mrs. Thomas Meehan, who died on Monday following a 5 year illness.
Mrs. Margaret Wirt died Sunday, January 18, at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Ivan Addy. Four sons and two daughters mourn her loss.
90 Years Ago -1936
Mr. & Mrs. S.M. Wixel attended the annual meeting of the Sioux City American Tuesday night in the Hotel Jackson at Sioux City. Scout C.M. Wixcel received a special certificate for leadership.
Marcus High School will have its home declamatory contest in the high school auditorium on Tuesday evening, January 26.
Stanley Addy, who for many years has conducted Poland China sales, will hold a sale at his farm February 11. W. Ernst and Ernst sisters will hold a spotted Poland China sale on February 20.
Three persons from Marcus and one from Pierson took the civil services exam for postmaster in these two towns at the Cherokee post office Saturday. Those from Marcus were J.P. Delaney, Ben Delaney, and Lyle Birch.
85 Years Ago -1941
Mr. Henry Dorr, Sr., observed his 71st birthday Tuesday at his home.
Raymond Schmillen, son of Mr. & Mrs. Alfred Schmillen, was painfully hurt last Saturday morning when his glove caught in the shaft of a tractor.
A baby boy, Terry Lee, born to Mr. & Mrs. Donald Tentinger, last Sunday night at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee, died at birth.
A group of ladies gathered at the Will Kiebhorn home Tuesday afternoon in honor of Mrs. Kielhorn’s birthday.
Mr. & Mrs Lawrence Swanson were pleasantly surprised last Friday evening, January 17, when a group of friends came to their home to help them observed their 10th wedding anniversary.
80 Years Ago – 1946
Lt. Carl Heline, son of Mr. & Mrs. Oscar Heline, was shot down over Germany February 14, and killed.
A thief or thieves broke into the Marcus Hardware Thursday night, January 17, and made away with an undetermined amount of merchandise.
Bob Ames has announced the lease of the Broblek Service Station in east Marcus and has been taken over the business. Mr. Broblek will continue the tank wagon service.
Mr. & Mrs. Jack Ropken and family plan to move to Long Beach, California the first part of February where he will engage in the lumber and turkey business.
Services for Oscar Tregoning, who passed away in the Methodist Hospital in Sioux City on Wednesday of last week, were held Friday from the Nelson Funeral Home.
75 Years Ago -1951
Mrs. John Meehan, 73, a resident of this community for 69 years, was called to her final rest Sunday afternoon at her home north of Marcus.
Miss Marcia Mouw, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Russell Mouw of Marcus, was selected as a candidate for snow queen at Mankato, Minnesota.
Mr.& Mrs. Lowell Nelson returned from Rochester, Minnesota, Monday where Lowell had gone through the clinic. He is coming along pretty well, but will have to take it easy for awhile.
The fire department was called to the Cy Brownmiller home Monday noon. Some straw in a brooder house was smoldering , but no damage was done.
Marvin Seel was taken to the St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City Saturday night, suffering with a severe heart attack. He is reported to be greatly improving.
70 Years Ago -1956
SN Eugene Gettner, son of Mr. & Mrs. William Gettner, arrived home Saturday, January, where he received his discharge. Gene had been stationed in Pearl Harbor.
Mr.s Kate Johnston, 80, died Sunday, January 22, at her farm home in Sheridan Township near Cleghorn, after a lingering illness.
The Marcus Township Homemakers will meet January 30 in the home of Mrs. Will Ament. The lesson “Better Breakfasts” will be given by Mrs. Albertr Bilsland and Mrs. Harley Neir.
Jerry Rae, Marcus, in company with a number of other Boy Scout workers from this area, attended a regional meeting of that organization in Omaha Tuesday.
Four students will compete in an oratory contest next Tuesday evening held at the school auditorium. They are Annette Dorr, Ronnie Dorr, Sandra Johnson, and Norma Seggerman.

Mr. & Mrs. Heesch returned Friday from Iowa City where she had spent a week at the hospital undergoing treatment.
Mrs. Dale Wester of Cleghorn was the winner of the Kay Whitney dress and Mrs. Helen Specht won the men’s cuff links given away at Nagle’s Apparel Saturday evening.
Mrs. Margaret Franck returned home Saturday from Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee where she had been a surgical patient for the past two weeks.
Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Schuster, Jr., are the parents of a daughter born Sunday, Jan 22, at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars. She weighed seven pounds, four ounces, and has been named Christina Barbara.
Charles Kudson was elected president of holy Name Society, Harold Johnson vice president, Ray Sand secretary-treasurer, and Maurice Keffeler, George Hoefling, Harold Schnoes, Jr., and Fred Tentinger, director.
60 Years Ago -1966
Mr. & Mrs. Claude Gross will observe their 25th wedding anniversary Sunday, January 30, with an open house at the Marcus municipal building. Their sons Lynn and Jeffery, will be host to the event.
Mr. & Mrs. Edgar Roseen and family were dinner guests of Dr. & Mrs. Ronald Steverson and family at LeMars Sunday.
The Ruth Cafe of faith Lutheran Church met at the home of Mrs. Orville Tapper with 11 members present. The program was present by Mrs. Ray Schmillen.
Mr. & Mrs. Bill Seggerman and Nancy, and Mr. & Mrs. Dale Dorr were dinner and supper guests Sunday of Mr. & Mrs. Bud Dyslin at Storm Lake.
55 Years Ago – 1971
Stephen Smith, son of Mr. & Mrs. James Smith, is on the dean’s list for the fall quarter at Iowa State University at Ames, with a grade point average of 3.76.
The Marcus freshman girls lost their second game in two starts Monday night as Anthon-Oto clobbered them 35- 18 on the local floor.
Race winners of the Club Scout Pinewood Derby held Monday evening in holy Name gym were: First, Tommy Wiese; second, Keith Ebert; third, Jeff Pedersen. Design winners were: First, Tommy Wiese; second, John Deichmann; third, Jim Rassel.
50 Years Ago -1976
Mr. & Mrs. Ken Ogren are the proud parents of their first child a son born January 14 at the Orange City hospital. David Paul weighed seven pounds, seven ounces. Grandparents are Mr. & Mrs. Merle Sand and Mr. & Mrs. Paul Ogren.
Michael Bies, son of Mrs. Delores Bies, and Genevieve Bindner, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Leonard Bindenerf, have been named to the dean’s list at Mt. Marty College, Yankton, for the first semester of the school year.
Harold Hohbach, 70, passed away Thursday, January 15 in the Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee following a year illness.
Phillip Ladenthin, son of Mr. & Mrs. Harold Ladenthin of Marcus, will be honored at a banquet on January 26, sponsored by the Cherokee Jaycees, for service to the community.
An open house will be held for Glayds Williams to help celebrate her 80th birthday.
45 Years Ago – 1981
Mrs. Sadie Roberts, 76, of Marcus, died suddenly Friday, January 16, at her home in Marcus. Services were held Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church.
Mr. & Mrs. Rick Meyer of Marcus became the proud parents of a daughter born January 16 at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee. Joelle Lynn weighed seven pounds, ten and half pounds and was 21 inches long.
Dan Boever, son of Mr. & Mrs. Dick Boever of Remsen, an outstanding Remsen ballplayer, was drafted in 1979 by the Cincinnati Reds and now is with the Atlanta Braves.
Claude Gross, owner of Gross, Inc. reports the theft of a new Flex-Wing Disc, Model 291 with hydraulic lift wing
Kay Krekow, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Krekow of Marcus, will be listed in the 1981 edition of “Who’s Who Among Students in American University’s and Colleges.”
