110 Years Ago – 1916
S.M. Wixcel Mfg. Co. is advertising a Paige “six 46” with detachable Sedan Winter Top complete at the price of $1,295.
The Marcus school board has been considering equipment the windows of the school building with fire escapes.
The newly elected director of the Commercial Club met Tuesday evening and elected officers for the coming years. E.L. Lundquist was elected president; W.W. White, vice president; L.M. Woods, secretary; and J.P. Delaney, treasurer.
100 Years Ago – 1926
George Neir returned Monday to Morningside following a vacation in the home of his parents Mr. & Mrs. H.E. Neir.
Mr. & Mrs. Claus Schroeder and family are listening to a new Atwater Kent radio.
Mr. & Mrs. Louis Quamen and family returned to their home in Sioux Rapids on New Year’s afternoon, taking with them Mrs. Quamen’s sister, Alma Luchterhandt, who will visit a few days.
Funeral services for Mrs. Carl Johnson, pioneer resident of this community, who passed away at her home last week, were held in the Carmel Lutheran Church Friday afternoon.
Many addition have been made to the equipment of Holy Name School since September through the generosity of friends.
90 Years Ago -1936
Mr. & Mrs. John Apel are the proud parents of a baby daughter born last Sunday evening.
Mr. & Mrs. William Kaiser of Marcus township are the proud parents of a 11 pound son born to them Sunday, December 29.
Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Episcopal Church Friday afternoon for Frank E. Brown, who passed away Wednesday morning following a brief illness.
For the first time New Year’s Eve, the people of the community were given a view of the interior of the Legion building in Marcus. The building with its many modern features is indeed a credit to the town.
Relatives and friends of Mrs. Ada Ilten are saddened with the news of her death which occurred last Friday, December 27 at Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Mrs. Elmer Olson of Marcus is a daughter of Mrs. Ilten, and Mrs. F.E. Rubbert and Mrs. G.W. Ohlendorf are her sisters.

Peters Brothers delivered a new one ton express Ford V-8 truck to Nels Pallesen last Saturday.
Mrs. Will Wendt was called to Randoph, Nebraska last Sunday to attend the funeral of her brother-in-law, Mr. Joe Scholer.
Mr. & Mrs. August Riedemann observed their 25th wedding anniversary Sunday when a group of friends and relatives pleasantly surprised them.
Duane LeRoy, the infant son of Mr. & Mrs. Carl Peterson, passed away Wednesday evening at the LeMars hospital.
Mrs. E.L. Wittkopp a daughter, Eunice, and student Arno Wittkopp, were visitors at the Henry Wendt home on Tuesday.

Sgt. Doris Toner, 42, son of Mr. & Mrs. L.C. Toner of Cherokee passed away at the Army and Navy General Hospital in Hot Springs, Arkansas
Mrs. Alma Heesch was pleasantly surprised last Friday afternoon when 14 ladies came to help her celebrate her birthday.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Davis, 89, were held Friday afternoon December 28, at the Wylie Satterlee home with Rev. J.H Castle officiating.
Mr. & Mrs. Ed Johnson were dinner guest in the Harry Johnson home Friday evening, December 28. The occasion was in honor of Mr. & Mrs. Harry Johnson’s wedding anniversary.

Mrs. Katherine Smith, 82, passed away quietly at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. & Mrs. G.W. Evans, Saturday noon following a long illness.
More than 110 friends and relatives attended open house in the Stanley Addy home last Thursday afternoon. December 28, honoring them on their 40th wedding anniversary.
Clare Beck, son of Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Beck, is among the group of Cherokee County young men leaving for Omaha today to be inducted into the Army.
Henry Specht will hold a closing out farm sale Thursday, January 11, at his place five miles south and three and a half miles east of Marcus.
About 45 relatives and friends gathered in the E.H, Goodburn home Thursday evening to help Mr. Goodburn celebrate his 82nd birthday anniversary.

Ted Olson, 57, farmer living eight miles south of Marcus, passed away in his sleep early January 2, at his home.
Mr. & Mrs. Harry Neir observed their 60th wedding anniversary New Year’s Day. An open house was held during the afternoon and evening with approximately 180 guests sharing the courtesy.
Frank Peppersack, a local bowler here rolled a 288 in Vermillion, SD, last Sunday evening at Rex’s Alley’s for series of 678.
Mr. & Mrs. Merle Sand left Monday by train for Tampa, Florida, where they will pick up his brother Paul’s car and drive to Phoenix, AZ to visit in the Mr. & Mrs. John Sand home.

Clarence Sand and Forrest Booth, veteran euchre players, won the community championship in that sport at the tournament recently completed at Ewald’s Place here.
Mr. & Mrs. Walter Garlow and Jean and Dick Booth returned Saturday evening from California where they had spent two weeks visiting in the M.C. Morgenthaler home at Reseda and the Joan Hunt home at Van Nuys.
Kirk Evans, son of Mr. & Mrs. E.E. Evans of Marcus, has been awarded company football letter at Wentworth Military Academy at Lexington, Missouri.
Mr. & Mrs. Leonard Harms and family moved last Friday into their new home which they recently purchased from the estate of the last Mrs. Ray Peters.
David Galles returned to Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, last Thursday after spending Christmas in the home of his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Ervin Galles.

Mrs. Johann Miller and Danny came home for Christmas from St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital in Sioux City where they had been hospitalized since November 8 from injuries suffered in an auto accident.
Jack Clarkson has bought the Nathan Rowen residence in Marcus. Nate has moved to Cherokee where he has another post with the Illinois Rail Road.
Mr. & Mrs. Grover Lehkuhl and two daughters have moved to the John Clarkson residence property. Mr. Lehkuhl is the new Illinois Central agent and comes here from LeMars.
The first annual Snow Ball was held on December 29 of last year. The senior candidate, Vicki Mead, was crowned queen of the ball. She was elected by penny votes.
Bill Ewert is home confined to his bed after suffering a heart attack.
55 Years Ago – 1971
Mr. & Mrs. Charles Beaton and family returned home Saturday evening from a two week southern vacation.
Mr. & Mrs. Lyle Rae are happy announce the arrival by adoption on December 11 of a daughter, Mary Nichols Rae, born October 10.
Andy Ballard was a medical patient four days at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars, returning home Thursday afternoon.
Mrs. Mary Brownmiller, 61, widow of Sherrill Brownmiller, passed away Wednesday, January 4 at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars after several weeks illness.
Kathy Bird, Gary Stodden, Bruce Hiller, Lois Wiebersch and Richard Carey have been selected as State of Iowa Scholars.

Mrs. Rose McClintock, 75, of Marcus died December 27, at Floyd Valley hospital in LeMars after a year long illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Dean Drefke are the parents of a nine pound, nine and a half ounce baby boy. He has been named Daniel Dean.
Mrs. Ruth Hogue fell Christmas Eve in front of her apartment breaking her ankle.
Mr. & Mrs. Jim Sanow of Marcus announce the birth of a daughter on December 29. She has been named Krista Ann.
Monday afternoon guest in the Roy Nelson home honoring Shirley Nelson on her birthday were Mary Jo Briggs, Karen and Julie, Mrs. Mable Barnes, Joyce Hoover, Nancy Nelson, and Paula Nelson.
45 Years Ago – 1981
Margaret Wagner is a patient at Floyd Valley hospital in LeMars after suffering a fractured hip from a fall on the ice Christmas night.
A free square dance will be held in honor of Mr. & Mrs. Ted Unkrur’s 20th wedding anniversary Tuesday, January 6 at the Marcus elementary school.
Mr. & Mrs. Dan Brownmiller of LeMars are the parents of a daughter, Dawn Christine, born December 28.
Glenn Miller has been transferred from the Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars to the Marian heath Center, St. Joseph post-coronary unit, in Sioux City.
Christmas drawing winners at Mike’s Barber Shop were Niels Nielsen and Francis Bierman, hair dryers.
