Using Newspapers in Doing Family Research
The monthly meeting of the Northwest Iowa Genealogical Society will be held on Saturday, January 17 at 1:30 PM in the fourth-floor study hall of the Plymouth County Historical Museum, 335 1st Avenue SW in Le Mars. Following a brief business meeting, valued member Susan Moller will give an interactive program focused on “Using Newspapers in Doing Family Research.”
A longtime resident of Plymouth County’s Craig, Moller delivered a fascinating program on that town’s history in 2024. But her skills as a researcher extend beyond places, as she began investigating family histories nearly 50 years ago. She says that using old newspaper stories has helped her rebuild entire families and make connections that otherwise would have been impossible.
During her talk, Moller will explain how to gain access to newspaper archives, and how to use them to find information about relatives. Plus, with the aid of the Internet and the video screen, she intends to give examples by doing quick research for attendees willing to participate. For anyone interested in doing so, it would be helpful to provide as much known family information as possible: locations such as town, county, state; full names with correct spellings; and of course dates.
When it comes to genealogy, Susan Moller is one of the more knowledgeable members of the group. Moreover, her willingness to share her expertise makes this a program worth spending an afternoon.
This event is free and the public is welcome to attend and participate. Refreshments will be served.
