105 Years Ago – 1920
Harry Mason and Lester Albaugh have leased the basement under the new Bancroft and Mason meat market for a new restaurant and short order house.
The people of the city were saddened this morning to hear of the death of Mrs. James Hoxsie.
After serving as landlord of the Central Hotel for thirty years, James Delaney has decided to quit the game. The dining room was closed November 1, but a rooming house will be continued.
Mrs. Ed Delaney wife of a prominent Marcus merchant and mother of eight children, passed away at St. Joseph hospital on November 6.
100 Years Ago – 1925
vGolden ears of corn are rolling into market, according to local buyers by the truck and wagon loads which dispels the belief that farmers would hold corn for higher markets. Ed Meylor 1925 corn at the Edmonds Londergan elevator. He received 64 cents a bushel for corn sold October 14.
Margaret Porter, who is taking a business course in Sioux City spent this weekend with her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Robert Porter.
Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Beck and son, Richard moved Monday from Remsen to their new home in Marcus. Mr. Beck is affiliated with the J.P. Beck Company, which owns general stores in Marcus, Remsen and Granville.
The farm house of Vivian Pierce, located one mile north of Cleghorn, was burned to the ground early Saturday morning the origin of the blaze being a defective chimney.
R.W. Steele of Ireton bought the prize pig at the Plowing Match for $115.
95 Years Ago -1930
Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Blietz were happily surprised Sunday evening by a group of twenty five relatives and friends to remind them of their ninth anniversary.
Mr. & Mrs. Lin Stowater and family of Paullina have moved into the Quinn residence formerly tenanted by Mr. & Mrs. Jim Miller
The junior high class will present a Thanksgiving feast of the Pilgrams is the theme. Characters who will play the leading parts are: John Alden, Howard Peavey; Priscilla, Dorothy Bower; Dame Goodly, Helen Metcalf and Governor Winelow, Wilbert King.

The junior class of Marcus public school will present its play “Three Days of Grace” in the school auditorium Friday, November 28.
Mr. & Mrs. Reginald Anderson of Minneapolis are the parents of a 7 pound son. He has been named Reginald Denny.
A group of boys and girl entertained at a weiner roast at the Playground last Sunday evening in honor of Don Loomis, who left Tuesday for his home in Omaha.
Fire of undetermined origin destroyed the coal shed, fuel and tool s at the Nels Pallesen home Friday morning. The fire department was called and prevented the fire from spreading.
80 Years Ago – 1945
Mr. & Mrs. C.G. Lighter and Theron moved to Marcus last week from Ocheyedan and are residing in the apartment previously occupied by Russell Mouw and family above the hardware store.
The Nelson Cleaners are installed in their new location in the building on the north end of the west side of Main Street. Mr. Nelson had the building completely renovated, with a new brick front and a complete painting job on the inside.
The Texaco Service Station in the south part of Marcus is opening today under the management of Cle and Irvin Galles.
Mr. & Mrs. Frank Clark celebrated their silver wedding anniversary Sunday.
75 Years Ago -1950
Jethro Stowater 84, a well known Marcus pioneer resident passed away in a Sioux City hospital early Friday morning following a three week illness.
The two car garage on the Lawrence Reinert place in East Marcus was badly damaged by fire Saturday afternoon. Enough damage was done so that the building will probably have to be wrecked.
70 Years Ago -1955
Kenneth Cave, 22 a young Marcus farmer met a tragic death Wednesday morning when his automobile struck a concrete bridge abutment on the four lane highway two miles north of Sioux City. He was alone in the car.
Jim Whealon was dismissed from Sacred Heart Hospital on Thursday where he had been hospitalized with several nasal hemorrhages.
Workmen have been busy this week building a new stucco front on Ewald’s Place, owned by Ewald Ball.
Word has been received of the death of Mrs. W.C. Beck of California, October 17.
Funeral services for George Beaton a farmer in this community for the past forty one years were held Friday afternoon, October 21 at Grace Methodist Church.
Arrangements have been completed for installing a wide screen at the Marland theatre early in November. The first cinema scope picture will be the evening of November 11 and It will be a good one, “Sea Chase.”

Charles Meehan, 62, a life long resident of Marcus died suddenly early Tuesday morning at his farm home north of Marcus.
Janice Kathleen Petersen, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Richard Petersen, son of Mr. & Mrs. R.W. Strohmeier of Sioux City exchanged wedding vows October 14 at Faith Lutheran Church in Marcus.
A shower honoring Mrs. Jack Olson a recent bride, was held in the home of Mrs. Dale Dorr Thursday morning.
Mr. & Mrs. Ray Lauters announce the approaching marriage of their daughter Marlene Kay, to James Boyle, son of Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Boyle of Danbury.
Mr. & Mrs. G.W. Evans have moved into their new home on S. Elm Street and Mrs. Mildred Briggs has moved into the home she recently purchased from Mr. & Mrs. Evans.
60 Years Ago -1965
Mrs. Joe Alesch, Jr. was the winner of the blanket given away Friday evening at Nagle’s Apparel.
Pvt. John Waukum arrived home Saturday from Fort Jackson, South Carolina for a furlough in the home of his parents Mr. & Mrs. Urban Wankum.
Henry Dorr, 95, Marcus oldest resident passed away Wednesday morning November 17 at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
David Joslin, son of Mr. & Mrs. Delbert Joslin of Marcus was one of the sailors to whom Governor Harold Hughes of Iowa talked while touring the Viet Nam War Theatre.
55 Years Ago – 1970
Aage Miller, 53, died Thursday afternoon in Cherokee. He was a long time resident of Marcus.
A seven pound, five ounce daughter was born to Mr. & Mrs. Jim Pearson on November 5 at SVMH. She has been named Melissa Ann.
Bernard Hassman was transferred form SVMH in Cherokee to Veteran’s Hospital in Sioux Galls on Monday.
Teresa Kauffman was honored on her birthday Sunday with dinner at the home of her grandparents Mr. & Mrs. Ernest Kauffman.
50 Years Ago -1975
Becky Schmillen, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Ronald Schmillen, has been selected to perform with the All State Band on November 21 & 22 at Ames.
Six Marcus football players were nominated for Little Sioux All Conference first team last week. They were Ray Addy, Blaine Case, Jim Leavitt, Doug Roseen, Jim Braun and Rick Dreckman.
The following itesm were on sale at Foodland this week: Rib Steak, lb 98 cents; Coffee, 2 lbs. $2.49; Keebler cookie, 100 count bag, 79 cents; Pepsi/Mr. Dew, 8 pack 16 ounces bottles, 98 cents.
45 Years Ago – 1980
Mr. & Mrs. Paul Wiebersch of Marcus are the proud parents of a daughter born Monday, November 10. She weighed eight pounds, nin ounces and has been named Jordan Leigh.
The Marcus Lions Club presented a $150.00 check to the Music Boosters $75.00 is for the Marcus Music Scholarship, and $75.00 is for the band uniform fund.
The MarcEttes donated $800.00 to the rescue unit to be used towards the purchase of a “Jaws of Life.”
Mrs. Dave Person was involved in a two car automobile accident at the Junction of 143 and 3 last Wednesday, November 5. She was taken to the LeMars hospital where she was treated for injuries and later released.
