95 Years Ago – 1915
A.H. Dwight, prominent Marcus citizen, died Tuesday morning, August 30, at the home of his son, Dr. Charles Dwight.
Will Woods has resigned his position in the telephone office and left Saturday for Ida Grove where both he and Mrs. Woods will have positions in the telephone exchange.
C.E. Wells of Fort Dodge has purchased and take possession of the furniture store of I.C. Thompsono.
105 Years Ago – 1920
Lyle Gowan of Marcus, Francis Swindle of Cleghorn and John Dewar of Plot Township, returned home from the State Fair Sunday having won fifth place in the boy’s livestock judging contest.
The marriage of Elizabeth Pfeiffer and Patrick Brady was solemnized Tuesday morning, August 24 at Holy Name Church with Rev. Cooke officiating.
100 Years Ago – 1925
M.R. O’Brien, owner of the Red Mill Cafe, has leased the rooms in the First National Bank building, which were used by the bank. The rooms are now being put in condition and Mr. O’Brien announced that he will move to his new quarters September 15.
C.D. Campbell of Miller, SD, is now operating the Ed Jimmermon Pool Hall located in the Exchange Bank building.
95 Years Ago -1930
Mr. & Mrs. George Weimer celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at Riverside Park in Cherokee August 22. The Weimer’s have been residents of Cherokee County for 35 years.
Mr. & Mrs. Floyd Moore are the parents of a girl born August 29. She has been named Bonnie Beatrice.
90 Years Ago -1935
Mr. & Mrs. James Rae and Mr. and Mrs. Homer Weimer returned where they spent a week at Stoney Point and other good fishing places this week. From Leach Lake, Minnesota.
Dr. R.E. Simonsen recently completed a deal whereby he became the owner of the quarter section farm north of Marcus, owned by the Dunn estate and farmed by Walter Dunn.
Treinen and Riter, proprietors of the Marcus Cafe and Managers of the Japanese Gardens, dissolved partnership Saturday when Roman Treinen bought out Eldon Riter’s share of the business.
Beck’s Food Store drew a large crowd Saturday evening when the 147 advertised grocery prizes were given away.
85 Years Ago -1940
Neal Anderson and Vernon Grauer, who won the Grand Championship and Reserve Championship with their baby beeves at the Marcus Fair, also won the same honors in the Plowing Match Baby Beef Show Monday and Tuesday.
The marriage of Mayme Offerman and Leo Wagner was solemnized at five Monday morning, August 26 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen.
The Masons are laying the walls under the Methodist Church in its $5,000 improvement program in its laying of the corner stone will be held September 15, with appropriate ceremonies.
Dorothy Rae, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Guy Rae, left Tuesday evening for Chicago, where she will take an eight month training course in one of the large hospitals.
80 Years Ago – 1945
S/Sgt. Cecil Dunn, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Dunn, arrived home last week from Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, where he received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army August 28.
George Dorr, son of Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Dorr, enrolled last week at Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls, where he is majoring in physical education.
Bernard Hogue, S1/c, son of Mr. & Mrs. Karl Hogue, arrived home Wednesday from Boston to spend a 30 day leave. Seaman Hogue has just returned from 145 months in the Pacific Theater aboard the Destroyer USS Braine.
S/Sgt. Raymond Flanagan phoned his parents, Mr. & Mrs. James Flanagan, Saturday that he had arrived stately in the state from Italy where he had been the past 20 months.
75 Years Ago -1950
A beautiful wedding was solemnized Sunday, August 27 at the Mt. Pleasant Church when Donna Simons, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Donald and John Leavit, son of Mr. & Mrs. Roger Leavitt were united in marriage.
Mr. & Mrs. Glen Cave are the parents of a girl born Friday, August 26 at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars. She has been named June Marie.
Holy Name Church was the scene of a lovely wedding Saturday morning, August 26 when Ruth Kramer, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Kramer, became the bride of Thomas Fenton, son of Mrs. Lucille Fenton of Sioux City.
Mr. & Mrs. James French observed their 50th wedding anniversary at open house attended by 185 at their home Sunday, August 20.
70 Years Ago -1955
Glenn Barnes, 65, a native and for many years resident of this community, died suddenly last Friday evening at the home of his niece, Mrs. Delmar Drefke, two miles southwest of Marcus.
Janet Polson, state girls 4-H president, was awarded the God, Home, Country Award at a special service held in the Carmel Lutheran Church Sunday morning, August 21.
The Bridgetts met Thursday, August 25, in the home of Mrs. Carl Boots. The evening was spent socially playing bridge after which a delicious lunch was served by the hostess.
Mrs. Harry Nelson entertained a group of children at a party Friday to celebrate Linnea Jean’s 8th birthday. The afternoon was spent playing games.
65 Years Ago -1960
Mr. & Mrs. Haold Johnson, Barbara, Ray and Steve, returned Thursday from 3 weeks trip to the West Coast.
The Marcus fire department was called to the aid of the Cleghorn department about nine last Saturday evening. Fire chief Francis Treptow’s car caught fire in the east part of Marcus, doing some damage to the wiring.
Mrs. Henry Alesch and a great niece, Mrs. James Mulvaney, arrived home Thursday morning from Denver, CO, where they had spent a week and Mrs. Alesch and 12 brothers and sisters held their reunion.
Mary Jane Byrne, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harley Byrne of LeMars and Paul Keffeler, son of Mr. & Mrs. Maurice Keffeler of Marcus, were united in marriage on Saturday, August 20 at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
60 Years Ago -1965
Mrs. Tom Cochrane returned home Saturday from Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee hwere she had been hospitalized for several days for treatment.
Grace Methodist Church was the setting Sunday, August 15 at seven in the evening for the wedding of Miss Diane Janelle Reimers, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Reimers, and Lowel Paul Foslan, son of Paul Froslan and the late Mrs. Paul Froslan of St. James, Minnesota.
Members of the Birthday Club met Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Arthur Dorr.
In a large ad form IGA in this weeks paper the following items were listed for sale: ground beef 2 lbs. 89 cents; Kraft sliced American cheese 8 oz. Pkg. 29 cents, Jonathan apples 4 lbs. 59 cents ; hamburger or hot dog bun pkg. of 8 19 cents.
Chris Miller, 60 passed away Monday evening at a Sioux City hospital following sugery for the removal of a brain tumor.
55 Years Ago -1970
Rev. Paul Dorr will be installed as missionary to the deaf for Mississippi and Louisiana on Sunday, September 13 at Christian Lutheran Church at Jackson, Mississippi. He is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Albert Dorr of Marcus.
John Addy. 23, son of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Addy of Marcus, was promoted to Army Specialist Four on July 22 at Fort Hood, Texas, where he is serving with the Second Armored Division.
Chris Wilkens was transferred Wednesday from Floyd Valley Hospital to St. Joe’s in Sioux City for further test and observations.
Ronnie Rupp, son of Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Rupp, as returned home after spending 14 months ini Viet Nam.
Mr. & Mrs. Bob Ruden are the parents of an eight pound 10 ½ ounce son born Monday, August 17. He has been named Daniel Duane, and has two brothers and one sister.

Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Anderson, Marcus are the parents of a seven pound 13 ½ ounce boy, Curtis Arlyn born on August 18.
Mrs. John Soukup the last remaining survivor of the George Billing Sr. family, passed away August 7 at Floyd Valley Hospital, LeMars, Iowa at the age of 90 years,
Mrs. Hans Delaney won the Jerrie Lurie dress given away at Nagle’s Apparel Saturday.
Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Hohbach of Marcus announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Judy to Duane Means, son of Mr. & Mrs. Vernon Means of Marcus.
A shower was held July 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Merlin Mohning in LeMars in honor of Lori Haahr, bride-to-be of Leland Mohning.
45 Years Ago – 1980
Mr. & Mrs. Steve Bouchard of Marcus are the proud parents of a son born Monday, August 18 at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Sioux City. He weighed seven pounds ½ ounce and has been named Cory Joseph.
Mrs Brian Nelson of Rural Marcus and Drew De Young, a Marcus resident, were hospitalized Sunday and released the following day when they were involved in an accident on the corner of Locust and Amherst last Sunday morning.
Robin Hanson, bride elect of John Bird, was honored at a miscellaneous shower at Faith Lutheran church on August 20.
Mr. Irvin Deichman and his son John, Marcus attended an orientation and registration session at Buena Vista College August 5.
Donna Kosse, daughter of Mr. and Mrs, Al Kosse, graduated from Iowa Lakes Community College in Emmetsburg, with an LPN degree.
