105 Years Ago – 1920
A rain came steadily down all night Wednesday evening in this section which was a life save to the corn crop.
100 Years Ago – 1925
Mrs. Cleona Galles, daughter of Mrs. Kathryn Galles, died in her home in Remsen Monday morning.
The George Kuhl Meat Market was a busy place Saturday, when a ton of ham was offered for sale. The entire offering was disposed of in one day.
Dr. R. E. Simonsen, who purchased the bankrupt shoe stock here a short time age, announced the store will reopen Saturday, August 22, with J.A. Hamad in charge.
Funeral services were held Saturday morning in Carmel Lutheran Church for John Johnson of Wausa, NE.
95 Years Ago -1930
Ruby Holmes was married Thursday, July 31 to Arthur Lake of Petersen, in a ceremony performed in the Methodist Church in Sioux City.
Dr. T.C. Knox left last week for Merrill where he will take over the practice of Dr. Nafziger.
90 Years Ago -1935
Ed Delaney, manager of the Lyric Theater, this week is making a worth while improvement in the theater. The floor is being raised 30 feet back with a slant of 30 inches at the start. There will be a center aisle only, which gives an additional seating capacity of 30 seats.
W.O. Kruse formerly owner of the Kruse Market, has changed his store to the Kruse Rite-Way Food Store, independently owned and operated under the Rite-Way Food Store System.
More than 50 tickets were sold for the chicken dinner at the Better Marcus Club held at he playground last Monday evening.
85 Years Ago -1940
Mr. & Mrs. N.T. Wells won the prizes at the golden wedding celebration at Pierson last Friday evening. Of the 13 couples honored for having been married 50 years or more, the Marcus couple, with a record of 69, won.
A beautiful wedding was solemnized a Trinity Lutheran Church when Ruth Letsche, became the bride of Ruben Rogness.
Dr. Harold Norris, eldest son of Dr. and Mrs. L.L. Norris, has begun the practice of medicine at Jacksonville, Illinois.
80 Years Ago – 1945
Announcement has been made of the engagement and approaching marriage of Lorraine Brandt, daughter of Mrs. Hilda Brandt of Hartley, to Cpl. William Breckmer, son of Mr. & Mrs. John Breckmer of Avoca, Minnesota.
The Charter Coach Co. started a business stop in Marcus this week with one bus running east and one running west daily. Satterlee’s Pharmacy has been set for their local stop.
Cpl. Howard McConnell arrived home lats Thursday to spend a 30 day furlong in the home of his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Ralph McConnell. Cpl. McConnell has just returned from overseas where he spent six months.
Funeral rites were held Saturday for Mrs. Elizabeth Kohn, 87 at the Immaculate Church in Cherokee.
75 Years Ago -1950
The Hogue Jewelry, a new business place in Marcus, will open its door Friday morning in the location recently vacated by the Iowa Liquor Commission’s Store.
The Marriage of Marilyn Jo Dorr daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Marion Dorr of Remsen, and William Waugh, son of Mr. & Mrs. Lionel Waugh of Spirit Lake, in the Trinity Lutheran Church south of Marcus.
Marcus will make a bid on the state baby health championship title at this years Iowa State Fair in Des Moines. Kathleen Rohm, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Rohm, is a local entry.
Mr. & Mrs. Lester Briggs entertained at a family dinner Sunday honoring Beverly Jo Christensen on her first birthday.
Mark Bancroft, Roy Nelson and George Luken were re-elected to the board of directors of the Marcus Coop Locker Association at its annual meeting Saturday evening.

Mrs. Frank Schmillen, 75, passed away on Wednesday morning at Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars following a stroke.
The Marcus PTA will hold its first meeting of the new school year Wednesday evening, August 31 at the central school building.
A machine shed on the Merrill Ames farm northeast of Cleghorn, tenanted by Francis Cronin, was destroyed by fire last Friday, evening.
A miscellaneous shower was held at the Carmel Lutheran Church parlors Sunday evening, August 7, in honor of Miss Shirley Pearson.
Miss Maybelle Meehan, daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. John Meehan of Marcus, and G. Ben Willey were married Saturday at the Cathedral of the Epiphany.
65 Years Ago -1960
James Collins, 87 who had been in the real estate and insurance business in Marcus for many years, died Monday, August 22 at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars after an illness of several weeks.
Frances Lou Benedict, daughter of Mrs. Clarence Benedict of Marcus, was on of the 36 graduates In the class of 1960 of the St. Joseph School of Nursing in Sioux City.
Mr. & Mrs. Clinton Johnson of Marcus announce the engagement of their daughter, Sandra, to Danny Fuhrmann, son of Mr. & Mrs. Waller Fuhrmann of Cleghorn.
Dick Nielsen was honored at a birthday party Sunday evening at the home of his parents Mr. & Mrs. Charles Nielsen.
60 Years Ago -1965
Medalist honors in the Tuesday night league went to Bud Boots with a par 36. Loren Stowater came in with a 39.
Vicki Lynn Mead, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Merle Mead of Marcus, will represent Marcus at the State Fair in Des Moines as a candidate for Miss Teen Queen.
Mr. & Mrs. Jerry Letsche are the parents of a daughter born Tuesday, August 17. The new arrival has been named Shelia Marie and has two brothers, Jeffery and Kenneth.
The Williams family reunion was held Sunday at the Marcus park. There were 30 in attendance. They were from Iowa, Kansas, and Minnesota.
In a large ad from Nagle’s Apparel they had the following items listed for sale: Girl dresses $1.99 to $3.99; basketball shoes $3.99; boys Fruit of the Loom underwear, 3 pairs $1.45.

Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Bindner are the parents of their first child, a seven pound, 15 ounce son, born Thursday, August 16. He has been christened Donald John.
Mrs. John Stamer was admitted to Orange City Hospital Saturday morning. She had the misfortune of breaking her leg. Her room number is 205.
The crossbred steer belonging to Bob Leavitt of Marcus was named grand champion at the baby beef show at the 34th Marcus Fair.
The bi-annual Knebel family reunion was held Sunday, August 16 at the home of Mrs. Catherine Muller.
Merrie Klemme of Akron, recent bride of Ron Prunty of Marcus, was honored with a miscellaneous shower in the First Church of Christ.
50 Years Ago -1975
Father Robert O’Reilly, pastor of Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus, suffered a stroke during services last Saturday morning.
Mrs. Walter Noyes and daughter, Debbie, and Marjorie Wilcox of Long Beach, California, are visiting in th eWilliam Wilcox and Don Gray homes in Marcus. Mrs. Noyes and Miss Wilcox are sisters of Mr. Gray and Mrs. Wilcox and are together for the first time in 22 years.
Miss Jane Yost, a graduate of Southeast State College, Durant, Oklahoma, will be band and vocal instructor in junior and senior high school.
Miss Sally Carstens of Cherokee, bride elect of David Stodden, was honored with a bridal shower August, 10 at the Trinity Lutheran Church parlors, Marcus.
45 Years Ago – 1980
Mrs. Fred Dorr, 96, of Marcus died Thursday, August 14 in Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee.
Mr. & Mrs. Rod Hanson of Marcus are the proud parents of a son born August 14, 1980. He weighed six pounds, one and three fourths ounces, and has been named Brook Allan.
The 1959, 1960 and 1961 classes of Holy Name high School will hold a reunion Saturday, August 30 at the Marcus Golf Course.
Mrs. Mary Gloystein, wife of Dr. Brad Gloystein, has announced the opening of her new beauty salon in the west portion of the Knudson building.
An open house honoring Karl Dorr and his bride, the former Amy Petrik of Sidney, Montana, will be held on Sunday, August 24 from 2-4 in the afternoon in Peace Lutheran Church parlors.
