90 Years Ago -1935Miss Irma Juhl is opening her Modern Beauty Shoppe in the rooms below the Farmers State Bank Saturday, May 1.A family dinner was enjoyed at the John Door home Saturday in honor of the 90th birthday anniversary of Elizabeth Dorr.One hundred-eleven sec-corn hog bonus check arrived in Cherokee County the latter part of last week and the distribution began on Monday at the Farm Bureau Office in Cherokee.Funeral services for Henry Richer, Granville, were held at the Methodist Episcopal Church on Wednesday afternoon.Delaney Brothers, proprietors of Delaney Brothers General Store in Marcus, has recently joined a cooperative buying organization known as the “Volunteer Food Stores.”J.B. A business change this week concerns the Muller Barbershop and the East Side Tavern. William Muller has sold his shop at Art Jenkins and has bought into the East Side Tavern with Joe Broblek.
Mrs. A.P. Johnson, who has been seriously ill for the past several months at the Sioux Valley hospital in Cherokee, passed away Tuesday.
Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Rohlfsen are the parents of a baby daughter born last Friday.
Six of Mrs. Thelma Thatcher’s Sioux Falls music pupils have recently returned form a two weeks concert tour in South Dakota. These young musicians are also pupils of Augustana College in Sioux Falls. Mrs. Thatcher is the daughter of Louise Johnson.
A son was born Tuesday to Mr. & Mrs. Ronald Briggs at the Sioux Valley hospital in Cherokee.

Funeral services for Mrs. Eldon Hospins were held in the Church of Christ in Cleghorn, Tuesday, April 24.
Anne Pederson, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Carl Pedersen, has been accepted as a student dietician at the Fitz Simmons General Army Hospital at Denver, Colorado.
Sunday, morning at 8:45 Mrs. Caroline Ludden passed away at her home at the age of 91 years, 8 months, and 6 days.
Mr. & Mrs. Don Nicholson are the parents of a daughter born to them May 3 at the Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars.
Ole Wallin pleasantly surprised last Monday evening when friends came to honor him on his birthday.

First unofficial figures on the town of Marcus released Tuesday by Loyal Martin, county crew leader, place the present population at 1,271.
Dave Nelson is the losing pitcher in the Eagles loss to Remsen Wednesday evening in the opening round of the district tournament.
Mr. & Mrs. L.P. Fitzgerald returned Monday morning from a three weeks trip to Miami, Florida.
Mr. & Mrs. Albert Grauer were guests to honor Saturday night at a “Top Notchers” banquet by the Archer Petroleum Corporation of Omaha at the Lewis Hotel, Cherokee.
On Wednesday evening, May 3, Mrs. Melvin Dorr entertained the members of the Bridgette Club in her home.
A group of friends and relatives called at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Howard Peavey Sunday to help their daughter celebrate her 7th birthday anniversary.

August Carlson, Marcus, will leave Saturday for a two month trip to his native Sweden, none of who he has seen in the past thirty-five years.
Stanley Simons, injured in a two car collision last week, is still in Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars and will undergo surgery on his right eye next week.
Selections for the outstanding boys of the two Marcus schools have been announced by the American Legion. The Legion makes similar awards each year at the end of the school session. Chosen from Holy Name School was John Norris, son of Dr. and Mrs. L.L. Norris. The public school selection was Ronald Dorr, son of Mr. & Mrs. Harold Dorr.
Conrad Dorr. Concordia Teachers College, Seward, Nebraska, son of Mr. & Mrs. Albert Dorr, has been assigned to teach at Trinity Lutheran School at St. Joseph Michigan.
Mr. & Mrs. Charles Rosburg, Riverside, California, are the parents of a son born Tuesday. April 26.

Word has been received here that E.M. Gillette, Wenatchee, Washington, observed his 103rd birthday Tuesday, May 10. Mr. Gillette will be remembered by very few Marcus people, having left here some 70 year ago.
The Community Cooperative Oil Company of Marcus purchased the equipment and business of the Remsen Victor of that town and took over the business May 1.
Bob Cheuy, Emmetsburg, has accepted a position as barber in Merle’s Barbershop here and is now on duty.
Twenty-two friends and neighbors came out with their tractors and plows Thursday to help John Robinson who was injured during the fire that destroyed his barn early in the week.
The contract for paving Primary 143 north of Marcus is scheduled for letting May 31 in Ames. Actual work on the project can start any time after the letting and it is presumed that the paving will be done sometime this summer and fall.

Mrs. Merle Kempton, 58, Sioux City mother of Mrs. David Bolfix, Marcus passed away Friday at a Sioux City hospital after a brief illness.
Mrs. Emercy Barwick, 69, died in Ames, Monday. She had lived in Ames for the past ten years and was a former resident of Cherokee.
Mr. & Mrs. Michael Baumgardener are the parents of their first child, a son, born Saturday, May 2.
Soft pastel spring colors beautified the Trinity Lutheran Church parlor for the Mother-Daughter Tea, Friday evening, May 1. The colors were also dominant in the May Pole table decorations and in the food that was served. There were 85 present at the tea including guests from Marcus, Cherokee, Remsen, and Sioux City.
Harry Peterson, 69, father of Carlyle Peterson, Marcus, passed away Saturday at the Battle Creek hospital.

Boy Scout Troop 113, Marcus, under the direction of Scout Master Sam Greene, won three first place ribbons at the Scout-A-Rama held in Sheldon on Saturday, May 3 at the Sheldon Armory.
Mrs. Arthur Jenness, 86, Quimby, died May 3 at the Iowa Falls Care Center.
Mrs. Esthur Anderson will be honored at an open house commemorating her 80th birthday anniversary on Wednesday, May 14.
Mr. & Mrs. Wilbur Kaiser are the proud parents of their first child, a daughter, born May 1 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
It was announced at the April 21 meeting of the Cherokee County Bicentennial Commission that the County has now received national recognition as a Bicentennial Community.

Cecil Dorr, 64 Marcus, died Sunday, May 4 at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee after a brief illness.
Mrs. Delbert Joslin, 72, Marcus, died Thursday, May 1 in Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital at Cherokee after a long illness.
Duane and Judy Means are the parents of a son born April 19.
Harold “Bud” Geringer, 72 Marcus died Wednesday, April 30 in the Veterans Hospital in Sioux Falls South Dakota after a long illness.
The 60th anniversary of Chapter FM PEO, Marcus is May 8. Fourteen names composed the charter list and the following were initiated: Mrs. Louise Brink, Mrs. Neva Wilson Barnes, Mrs Mabelle Edmonds, Mrs. Ethel Gund, Miss Mae Hamilton, Miss Myrtie Imhoff, Mrs. Mabel Heline, Mrs. Grace Knox. Mrs. Florence Londergen, Mrs. Madge Loomis, Mrs. Helen Miller, Mrs. Anna Mossman, and Mrs Leila Woods. Mrs. Oscar (Mabel) Heline is the only member of the chapter list with membership in the Marcus Chapter.
