A dozen men in Clehgorn have organized an overall club and their first appearance was last Sunday when they filed into the Christian Church for morning services.
Fred Knox plans to open a theatre in the Opera House as soon as he can get action from the Iowa Light, Heat and Power Company.
B.J. Beck returned home Saturday from California where he has been the past three weeks doing the advertising stunt for the Harris Implement Company.
Floyd Hamilton of the Marcus News has withdrawn from the contest for representative from Cherokee, County in favor of J.C. Locklin, Aurelia.
100 Years Ago – 1925
O.W. Ekblad, implement dealer, has closed out his line and will convert his large building on Main Street into a dance pavilion and a moving picture theatre.
Last Thursday afternoon 110 friends and relatives gathered at the farm home of Mr. & Mrs. L.E. Toner to assist them in celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary.
Andrew Kenny and James Mulvany, directors in the First National Bank, purchased all of the remaining assets of the defunct institution at a public auction sale here Monday for $35,000.
90 Years Ago -1935
Mrs. Elizabeth Van Wechel, Marcus, was elected new county chairman of the Federal Clubs in Cherokee County at the all day session at the Japanese Gardens last Wednesday.
Miss Margaret Delaney, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Delaney, has been awarded first prize in an essay contest conducted by the Catholic Rural Life Conference.
Marcus Public School will be host to everyone interested in educational work at its annual exhibit Friday, May 3.
A pageant of wedding gowns and coon wedding were presented at the Grand Meadow high school auditorium Friday evening. Wedding gowns from as far back as 1873 were modeled and the styles of years ago were greatly enjoyed by the audience.
Since the start of the rain Tuesday this community has received 12 inches of rainfall.
85 Years Ago -1940
A deal was completed Wednesday by which Brownmiller Brothers have taken over the interests of the late George Kirchner in the Standard Oil Service Station at the north end of Main Street.
Miss Maxine Miller, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Harry Miller, is helping to prepare the Oak Hill float for the parade in the 1940 Veishea Celebration to be held on May 9-11 at Iowa State College.
Louis Rathmann, Remsen who recently resigned from the West Iowa Telephone Company, after being employed as an operator there for the past 29 years, was pleasantly honored with a farewell party in the basement of the Municipal Building in Remsen.
Mr. & Mrs. Arnold Lottman are the proud parents of a baby girl born April 29.
Friends will be sorry to hear of the death of Mrs. Theresa Weihbrodt, Remsen, who passed away Sunday after a lingering illness.

80 Years Ago – 1945
Last Wednesday Mrs. Walter Dunn treated her three grandchildren Agnes, Mary and Bobby Willems to ice cream and cake. The occasion honored them on their birthdays which occurred March 25, April 25 and May 5.
Pvt. Aaron Waller, 117 Infantry 30th Division, has been recently awarded the Bronze StarMedal for gallantry in action while participating in several campaigns in Germany. Pvt Waller is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Joe Waller, Marcus.
Fire broke out on the Gerald Rae farm Monday afternoon about 4 causing the complete destruction of the old barn and hog house amounting to a loss of approximately $1500.00.
Last Wednesday the high school team met Paullina on the Paullina field and were defeated with a score of 7-1.
Born to Mr. & Mrs. Lee Willems, a son, Saturday, April 28 at their home. The Willems have three other children.
Petty Pedersen, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Carl Pedersen has enlisted in the Cadet Nurse Corps and will leave in June for Denver where she will enter St. Joseph’s hospital there.

Willis Weimer, 70,Long Beach, California, passed away Friday evening April 21 at his home.
Diane Reimers, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Reimers was named winner of the baby popularity contest, sponsored by the Cherokee Commercial Club.
Mrs. Marlin Grosenheider 27, passed away in a LeMars hospital Monday of this week following an extended illness.
Ed Douvia dropped into the news office Saturday to pay his new subscription for the 50th time.
Velma Hohbach, Norman Carlson, Floreine Carlson, Elna Jorgensen, James Williams, Durward Rieper and Joanne Hargens were the seven children confirmed at at Peace Lutheran Church Sunday morning.
Saturday evening Mrs Blanche Pitts entertained several friends in honor of Mrs. E.A. McGee who is visiting here from Buena Park, California.
70 Years Ago -1955
Saturday. May 14 has been set as the date of the new Farmers Elevator building here. The huge 250,000 bushel concrete addition to the elevators property is now finished, having been built entirely since late last fall.
Roy Peterson, son of Mr. & Mrs. Anders Peterson, Marcus, was elected Hypophetes Chaplin of the Delta Sigma Chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon at Morningside College.
OAO Club members and their husbands honored two couples at an anniversary party at the Center School Friday evening, April 29. The couples were Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Smith, who have been married fifteen years, and Mr. & Mrs. Will Berger, who have been married thirty five years.
The American Legion Auxiliary entertained the Golden Star Mothers at a potluck dinner on Tuesday, May 4 at the Legion Hall. President Lucille Rae presented Mrs. Dess Knox, Mrs. Oscal Heline, Mrs. Andrew Reinert and Mrs. Merle Weicht with corsages.
Coach Harry Helgason of the Marcus Public School reports that there is a growing interest in track at the school and that a number of boys have entered neighboring meets.

Mrs. Augusta Slagter, 75 died Sunday afternoon, May 1 at the Marcus Nursing Home. Mrs. Slaghter fell a number of weeks ago receiving a fractured hip, for which she underwent surgery at University Hospital in Iowa City.
The proposed re-organization of the Marcus, Grand Meadow, and Tilden School Districts carried by a wide margin Wednesday when slightly over 84 percent of the ballots cast favored the proposition.
Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Miller, are the parents of a son born Saturday, April 16.
Mr. & Mrs. Dean Berger and family William Berger and Mr. & Mrs. Loren Polson and family entertained at dinner Sunday in the Polson home honoring their parents Mr. & Mrs. Will Berger on their 40th wedding anniversary.
Funeral service for Mrs. Ella Maass, 64, prominent Remsen woman and a lifelong resident there, who died Saturday, April 23 at the Sacred Heart Hospital, LeMars were held at Christ Lutheran Church Tuesday afternoon.

The Marcus Fire Department was called to the Mrs. Ella Stowater farm about seven miles south of Marcus on Sunday morning to extinguish a blazing cottonwood tree which had been struck by lighting.
Mr. & Mrs. Francis Wendt are parents of a son born Wednesday, April 14 at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Sunday morning in a special Confirmation Services, eleven young people become communicant members of Peace Lutheran Church. The following were confirmed: Neal Bork, Stephen Cline, Eugene Dorr, Julie Drefke, Linda Ebert, Gloria Husman, Donald Lage, Denis Means, Dennis Seel, Lloyd Steffens and Judy Weber.
William Roberson has retired from the United States Navy following a career that started on March 23, 1943, and spanned two ward, World War II and the Koren Conflict. Rd/3 Roberson is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Lovell Roberson, Marcus.
Mr. & Mrs. Dean Uhlrichson, Wilmington, Delaware, are parents of a son born Sunday, April 25.

Mr. & Mrs. John Anderson will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary Sunday, May 3 with an open house at St Paul’s Methodist Church in Cherokee.
US Air force Senior M/Sgt Louis Pottebaum son of Mr. & Mrs. William Pottebaum, Marcus has been decorated with a Bronze Star for meritorious service while engaged in military operations.
Mr. & Mrs. Richard Recker are parents of a son born Friday, April 24 at Orange City hospital.
The Marcus band, girls’ glee and chorus will be performing at the state band and vocal group contest at Orange City, Saturday, May 2.
Open House is being held to honor Mrs. Dorothy Griffith who is retiring form teaching. It will be held at Grand Meadow School on Sunday, May 3

Mr. & Mrs. Percy Means will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary with an open house on Sunday, May 4 in the basement hall of the Municipal Building.
Jim Pearson adds another line to his used car business by obtaining the franchise of the “Play Moo Camping Trailers.”
Frank Burch has again been named manager of the Marcus Community Golf Course for the tenth consecutive year.
Mr. & Mrs. Joe Nelson are parents of their first child, a boy, born Tuesday, March 25.
45 Years Ago – 1980
Hesse Chevrolet will be celebrating their 7th anniversary with free coffee, pork sandwiches, and door prizes to be given away. The gala event will be held this Saturday, May 3.
Peace Lutheran church will observe its 35th anniversary Sunday morning.
John Ludwig, 76, Marcus, died Sunday, April 27 in a hospital at LeMars of a long illness.
The Hawkeye Lounge will be open for business this Saturday, May 3 according to owners Pall Collins and Boze Rasmussen. The Hawkeye, formerly the Snyder Tap was destroyed by fire just before Christmas 1979.
Mrs, Clarence Ruba, 62 died Friday, April 25 at a Remsen retirement home after a long illness.
Rodney Ebert, one of our better local golfers, score a hole in one on the 190 yard par 3 fourth hole at the Marcus Golf Course.
