110 Years Ago – 1915
Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Hanosn expect to start on their homeward journey from Denmark January 31. They will visit New York and Chicago on the way home.
105 Years Ago -1920
Miss. Blanche Bird, daughter of Tom Bird, died Wednesday noon at the J.L. Ryan home of pneumonia. Miss Bird had been ill about a week. She had worked as a telephone operator in Marcus for several months.
George Neff of Newell arrived this week to make his future home in Marcus.
Mr. & Mrs. F.F. Collier are making arrangements to move out on their farm south of Marcus about March 1.
Dan Dubes of Aurelia sold his 40 acre farm just south of Aurelia to A.W. Baltimore. The price per acre was $750 cash consideration.
It is now seems almost certain that pork will reach the 21 cent mark this year.
100 Years Ago – 1925
Mr. & Mrs. John Quinn have sold their acreage property near Sunset Hill to George Treinen who will take possession March 1.
After a separation of 47 years, Mrs. M. Collins of this city was reunited with her sister Mrs. Margaret McRae of Hobson, Montana. Mrs. McRae arrived last week to visit her sister who is confined to her bed have recently been stricken with paralysis.
The hearts of all Marcus people were weighted down with sorrow on Tuesday morning when word was received of the death of Kenneth LeRoy Pitts, a student of Iowa State University, which shortly after eight p.m. in a Iowa City Hospital.
James Collins of Marcus, who is attending the University of Iowa has been announced as a pledge of the chapters of Kappa Beta Psi fraternity. James entered the university after the holidays having previously attended Creighton University.
Funeral services for Mrs. J.B. McGee were conducted at the Methodist Church last Thursday.
90 Years Ago -1935
Jimmy and Audry Smith, children of Mr. & Mrs. Stanley Smith, entertained at a meeting of the Junior Chamber of Commerce held at the Elks Club in LeMars last Thursday evening.
A new Gamble agency store, owned and operated by Lyle Husser, will open in Marcus Saturday, February 23. The new store is located in the IOOF building at the north part of Marin Street.
The 57th and last sale to be held by Henry Dorr, breeder of Poland China hogs will be held at he farm in Marcus Tuesday. The highest price for any one hog at this sale was $152.50.
A fine new dance hall is to be built just south of Cobblestone Inn at Lakeside Beach in Storm Lake.
John Williams returned home on Saturday from Illinois where he had spent some time visiting in the home of his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. & Mrs. Loren Morris.
85 Years Ago -1940
Marcus Hardware owned and operated by Mr. & Mrs. James Rae for 12 years was sold this week and possession was given to the new owner Tuesday who is Wendell Phillip of Remsen.
John Thomas Woodall departed this life on Friday, February 16 at the age of 75 years 2 months, and 25 days.
Mrs. Mary Plutorek was born February 2, 1880 and passed away on Monday, February 19 at Remsen at the age of 60 years and 17 days.
Mr. & Mrs. Harley Wingert were pleasantly surprised Thursday afternoon when a few relatives came as a farewell courtesy prior to their leaving for Minnesota where they will make their future home.
80 Years Ago – 1945
Samuel Postel, son of Mrs. Ellen Postel of this city and the late David Postel, passed away at his home in Primghar on Wednesday morning, February 14 due to a heart attack.
Mr. W.J. Landgraf of Early, Iowa, brother of Mrs. Charles Auchsetetter has been named “Corn King of Iowa” having won this title with a yield of 161.92 bushels of Pioneer No. 340 per acre.
Mr. & Mrs. Henry Gottelsben of Detroit, Michigan announce the birth of a daughter on February 10.
Fifty six friends and relatives pleasantly surprised Mr. & Mrs. Russel McConnell on their 30th wedding anniversary at their home Saturday evening.
75 Years Ago -1950
Harold Wood, superintendent of the Marcus Public School, has informed the board of education that he does not wish to be considered for the position for the coming year. Mr. Wood did not state his reason for his decision or announce any plans for the future.
The entire community was saddened by the death of Martin Nelson, 59, a long time resident of this community. Mr. Nelson died early Sunday morning February 19 in the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars following a brief illness.
Fifty friends and neighbors gathered in the home of Mrs. Ann Start Saturday evening to honor her and her niece Margaret Griff at a surprise farewell party.
Mr. & Mrs. Henry Meyer observed their 22nd wedding anniversary Tuesday, February 14.
A group of relatives surprised Mr. & Mrs. France Wilberding on their 20th wedding anniversary Friday evening, February 17.
70 Years Ago -1955
The office of W.W. Bass and sons received considerable smoke damage Saturday morning when the oil heating unit in the basement burnt out, allowing fuel oil to run out on the flooring and catching fire. Business records stored in the basement were badly charred and valuable collection of primitive art in the office were ruined by smoke.
Funeral services for Harold Wixcel, 70, a former Marcus resident, were held last Thursday in the Nelson Funeral Home here.
Mr. & Mrs. Russell McConnel entertained at a dinner at their home last Thursday evening in honor of their 40th wedding anniversary.
Fire destroyed about $10,000 worth of property early Monday morning on the farm 6 miles south of Marcus tenanted by Lawrence Johnson and owned by Mrs. Mary Grigg of Cherokee.
65 Years Ago -1960
At a meeting held in the Marland Theatre on Thursday, February 18 the stockholders of the Farmers Cooperative Elevator of Marcus authorized the construction of a new scale and office building.
Open house will be held on Sunday afternoon February 28 at the Reformed Latter Day Saints Church in Cherokee, honoring Mr. & Mrs. Harvey White on their 25th wedding anniversary.
Mr. & Mrs. John Bentz celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary Sunday. The couple have lived in Marcus about 15 years, operating the Idle Hour Cafe since coming from Newell.
Clarkson IGA Super Marcus will move to a new home over the weekend according to an announcement made this week by its owner John Clarkson. The store presently housed in the corner location of the Nagle building, will move to the south half of the Wiebersch building recently vacated by the Marcus Cooperative Lockers.
Mrs. Thomas Garvin was honored Sunday afternoon, the occasion being her 81st birthday.
Mr. & Mrs. Max Delaney are the parents of a daughter born Thursday, February 21 at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.

Mrs. Harm Seggerman, 83 passed away Wednesday evening at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars following a long illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Hans Miller of Remsen will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, February 28.
Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Hirschman of Washta will be honored with an open house Sunday, February 28 in observance of their 50th wedding anniversary.
Roscoe Brown, 73 of Paullina, died Sunday at Cherokee. Mr. Brown fell from a ladder at his home at Paullina.
Mr. & Mrs. James Brady of Huntington Beach, California are the parents of a daughter born February 4.
55 Years Ago -1970
Mr. & Mrs. Bert Nielsen observed their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, February 15 with their family.
Mrs. Frank B. Miller 87, a resident of Marcus the past few years and making her home with a daughter Mrs. Wesley Dill, died Thursday in Cherokee.
Funeral service for Miss Charlotte Toomey, 64 of Mesa, Arizona, were held Monday morning in Holy Name Church in Marcus with the Reve Robert O’Reilly officiating.
Mr. & Mrs. Donald Simons will observe their 40th wedding anniversary.
Mrs. Walter Nafziger 75, a resident of Cleghorn most of her life, died suddenly while visiting at the farm home of her daughter near Cherokee.
50 Years Ago -1975
Mr. & Mrs. Ray Gates of Marcus will observe their 40th wedding anniversary with an open house February 23 at their home at 505 E Amherst.
Mr. & Mrs. Tim Bindner of Denver, Colorado are parents of a daughter born January 28.
Mr. & Mrs. Wayne Barnes of Marcus are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary February 25.
Mr. & Mrs. Bob Hazen were honored on their 25th wedding anniversary with a neighborhood party on Saturday, February 15.
Mr. and Mrs. Claude Grey hosted a dinner at Gus’ Steak House in Cherokee honoring Roger and Nancy on their 20th wedding anniversary.
45 Years Ago – 1980
The Cherokee County Cow Belles represented by the president Mrs. Bonnie Ducommun of Larrabee, recently received the second annual award for outstanding club contribution to the Iowa Cow-Belles Beef Promotion Program.
Twenty two relatives met at the Big Booth on Saturday, February 9 and were served a buffet style dinner honoring Mr. & Mrs. Roy Nelson, hosted by their children and spouses and grandchildren and spouses.
Chung (Joe) Lo Van, wife Hug Thi Naung sons, Boun Tom Lo Van 16 years and Kham Haung Lo Van, 14 arrived in Sioux City from Thailand Saturday, February 16 after a 24 hour flight from the refugee center.
Brian Reinholdt of Marcus has been accepted for enrollment in the Welding program at Northwest Iowa Technical College in Sheldon.
