110 Years Ago – 1914
After a few years illness of diabetes Cyril Arnold Nafzigger died on December 6 at the home of his grandparents.
W.W. Bass was called to Sioux City Wednesday afternoon to be present at the second operation to be performed on his father Charles Bass.
Russ McConnell left Saturday for Milan, Illinois for a visit with relatives during the holidays.
The new parlor car attached to the 3:10 passenger train is already having a fine patronage although the additional service has been only on a short time.
Mrs. M.J. Kelly departed on Wednesday for Independence to visit until after Christmas with relatives.
105 Years Ago -1919
A good attendance and good prices were features of the Otto Schneider public sale east of Marcus on Wednesday of last week. Some of the yearling heifers brought as high as $70.00; two years old steers $73.50, and yearling steers $57.00.
Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Dorr are the parents of a son born Wednesday. December 16.
100 Years Ago – 1924
Mrs. Hope Niemann has been reappointed to the postmaster in Marcus.
Charles Auchstetter submitted to an operation in Sacred Heart Hospital last Tuesday.
Miss Tabor of Paw Paw, Illinois, came last Friday to visit with her daughter Mrs. H.E. Neir.
Dr. R.P. McDonald was elected commander of the Goodburn Post, American Legion at the annual meeting Monday night. He succeeds Dr. M.F. Joynt who had served as the head of the post since its organization five years ago when he was honored by being elected its first commander.
John Foley, well known farmer of this community, was elected vice president of the Western Mutual F & L Insurance Company at the annual meeting Thursday.
95 Years Ago -1929
J.P. Ament left Wednesday morning for, Toledo, Ohio where he will tour the Willy’s Overland factory and drive a new Willys six home.
Mr. & Mrs. Bob Meylor of Spencer are the parents of a baby boy born Monday, December 9.
75 friends and neighbors enjoyed a jolly charivari party in the Will Schmillen home Sunday evening complimentary to Mr. & Mrs. Harry Jans who were recently married and just returned from Mankato, Minnesota.
The public school will dismiss the school Friday for a two week Christmas vacation. Those of the faculty who lives out of town will leave Friday or Saturday to spend the holidays in their respective homes.
Miss Catherine Woods, student at Drake University in Des Moines, will arrive Saturday to spend Christmas with her parents, Mr. & Mrs. L.M. Woods

Art Harvey plans to come home from the hospital this week where he has been placed in a cast from a back injury.
Mr. & Mrs. Herman Lage have taken possession of the Smith’s Cafe and will operate it with their son and his wife, Mr. & Mrs. Terrance Lage.
Mrs. N.C. Evans had this misfortune to fall and break her ankle Monday morning.
Lloyd Tentinger is in the Sioux Valley Hospital at Cherokee from the effect of an automobile accident last Friday morning.
80 Years Ago – 1944
An Eighth Air Force Fighter Station, England, Sergeant Vernon Donner of Marcus P-51 Mustang airplane mechanic in the 364th Fighter Group was recently awarded the Good Conduct Medal for exemplary behavior, efficiency and fidelity in a year’s service.
The Gold and Maroon basketball players of Holy Name School journeyed to Danbury on Sunday afternoon and won both games of a doubleheader. In the fist game, Ken Schmillen stood out for sinking three free throws out of four trys. In the final game Matt Brady accounted for 14 points, all from the field.
Wednesday evening the Firemen entertained their wives at a chicken dinner in the Municipal Building. Mrs. Bernita Drefke was hostess to the Tourist Club Wednesday afternoon December 6.
75 Years Ago -1949
Roy Nield, 51 and a former resident of Marcus, passed away at his home in Yale, Oklahoma followinga long illness.
The entire community was shocked by the death of William Schmillen, 73, who died Sunday evening December 11 following a stroke.
Herb Stowater of Marcus finished first in the bowling tournament at Lester’s Alleys in Sioux City with 824 pins and handicap of 70. Jerry Rae with a total of 844 finished ninth.
Russel Mouw, operator of the Marcus Hardware, was elected president of the Marcus Commercial Club at Monday noon’s meeting to succeed Ray Niemann.
Dr. and Mrs. M.R. Nelson attended Handel’s Messiah which was held Tuesday evening in the Central high school auditorium in Omaha, Nebraska. Mrs. Nelson’s sister, Mrs. Norman Boyer, sang the soprano solos.
70 Years Ago -1954
Open house for the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. & Mrs. John Doehla will be in their home at Primghar Tuesday afternoon December 21.
Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Beck have received word from their son Clare who is studying for his Master’s Degree at the University of Nebraska, that he has received a fellowship. He is evaluating audio visual recordings for the school’s department of public relations.
Mr. & Mrs. Emil Anderson held open house for their 25th wedding anniversary on Sunday afternoon, December 12 in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church parlors at Cherokee.
A group of 15 ladies honored Mrs. Joe Kestel at a surprise birthday party at her home Tuesday afternoon.
Mrs. Ray Juhl was honored on her birthday Sunday evening when a group of friends surprised her at her home.
A son was born Thursday Day to Mr. & Mrs. Donald Foley of Binghamton, New York, formerly of Marcus.
65 Years Ago -1959
Several members of the Marcus Fire Department were given service pins at the fireman’s meeting last Thursday evening. Fritz Wilkens received a 25 year pin. Howard Peavey and John Clarkson 20 years pins and Ray Gates a 15 year pin.
Mr. & Mrs. Garland Hohbach of Hartley are the proud parents of a daughter born Friday, November 29.
A group a neighbors gathered at the Paul Benson farm on Monday of last week and helped Mr. Benson with has corn picking. Mr. Benson is recovering from an operation and was unable to do the work.
Mrs. Chris Nielsen, 61 of Spencer, passed away at her home Monday, December 7. Mr. & Mrs. Nielsen were formerly from Marcus having farmed north of town for a number of years before moving to Spencer.
Don Anderson manger of the Farmers Cooperative Elevator Company of Marcus was chosen president of the Marcus Commercial Club following a meeting Wednesday evening of the body’s newly elected board of director.
60 Years Ago -1964
Mrs. Sophoa Dorr, 92, passed away Friday at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Mr. and Mrs. Tom King of Hooven, Ohio and former residents of Marcus will observe their 50th wedding anniversary December 29.
Word was received by the News of the death of Ed Keleher who passed away Wednesday at Wilmette, Illinois. Mr. and Mrs. Keleher were longtime Marcus residents and had moved to Wilmette a few years ago.
Mrs. Ray Hantsbarger of Meriden won the Buster Brown shoes given away Saturday evening at Nagle’s Apparel.
55 Years Ago -1969
Arthur Evans, a former resident of Marcus, died in a Storm Lake hospital Sunday after a long illness.
Mrs. Mary McDonald, director, Department of Nursing at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetss has announced the appointment and promotion of Rosemary Whealon to the position of Head Nurse of the Private female surgical intensive care unit at the General November 24.
Jim Whealon, cashier of the Farmers State Bank, received a 30 year award at the Toy National Bank Christmas part held at the Sioux City Country Club December 10.
Gail Bancroft, a student at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota will leave December 27 for five weeks of study in Europe.
Mr. & Mrs. Tom Yanacheak of Anthon are parents of their first child, a son, born December 8.
50 Years Ago -1974
Louis Ducommun is the new owner of the Cleghorn Super Saver formerly known as Uncle Milt’s Super Saver.
Mrs. Agnes McIntosh was the recipient of the honorary membership pin and certificate given by the Cleghorn Presbyterian Friendship Guild at their Christmas luncheon Wednesday afternoon.
The Marcus grapplers grabbed their second duel meet win of the season over Meriden-Cleghorn here Wednesday night 36 to 18. Marcus still sports two undefeated wrestlers in Mike Olson an dRick Lenox.
Mrs. Vance Harnack of Remsen won the sportswear given away at Nagles Saturday.
45 Years Ago – 1979
The Rev and Mrs. Fremont Faul will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Christmas Eve. The Rev. Faul was the Methodist minister here in Marcus in the early forties.
Mrs. Nina Marie Arbouin of Torrance, California, a former Marcus resident, passed away after a lingering illness November 27.
Frank Crocker, 91, died Saturday December 8 at Sioux Valley Memorial hospital in Cherokee after a brief illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Wayne Kolbeck of LeMars are the proud parents of a baby boy born Thursday, November 29.
Mrs. Nye McConnell, 96, of Kingsley died Wednesday, December 5 in a Sioux City hospital.
Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Erickson are the proud parents of a daughter born December 4.
