Cherokee County Audit Report
Winther, Stave & Co., LLP has released an audit report on Cherokee County, Iowa for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2023.
The County had local tax revenue of $24,643,793 for the year ended June 30, 2023, which included $1 in tax credits from the state. The County forwarded $18,370,555 of the local tax revenue to the townships, school districts, cities, and other taxing bodies in the County.
The County retained $6,273,238 of the local tax revenue to finance County operations, a 3.4% decrease from the prior year. Other revenues included charges for service of $1 ,761 242, operating and capital grants, contributions and restricted interest of $8,414,751, unrestricted investment earnings of $296, 169, and other general revenues of $2,799,535.
Expenses for County operations totaled $13,716,910, an 8% increase from the prior year. Expenses included $6,850,576 for roads and transportation, $2,628,263 for public safety and legal services, $1 ,852,489 for administration, and $2,385,582 for other functions.
One finding was noted related to the receipt and expenditure of taxpayer funds. The finding addresses issues of lack of adequate segregation of duties. The County was provided with recommendation regarding the finding.
