Council Considers Next Steps for Distressed Properties

On December 8 the Marcus Council unanimously approved an initial budget hearing to be held Monday January 12, 2026. The council also accepted the resignation of the City’s Economic Development Director. Discussion of replacement, who or if, was held with no decision made.
Items on the consent agenda of note that were approved are the Community Center’s Class C Retail Alcohol License was renewed and the Hometown Christmas Parade Permit. The recommendation to appoint Shari Lehnoff to the Library board met with unanimous support.
A discussion of how to proceed with an abandoned property at 205 N Beech St. raised some questions. The property owners, Martha and Dale Draper have both passed. No estate has been established. A granddaughter had been caring for the property and in contact until about a year ago. Council supported having legal counsel pursue options.
The status of the house at 113 Locust that caught fire in July 4 was given. As of December 8 all of the liens and taxes had been cared for. There is an assumption that the pending cash sale has expired. The owners are willing to finalize the disposal of the property.
Council approved hiring occasional cleaning of city hall.
