110 Years Ago – 1916
A crepe paper ball will be given at the Marcus Oprea House Wednesday, January 26. A prize of $5.00 is offered to the lady wearing the nicest crepe paper costume.
Funeral services of Mrs. E.C. Fry were held Friday at the Christian Church, conducted by Rev. F.E. Osborne. Mrs. Fry was born January 17, 1878, in Seward Illinois, coming to Cherokee County at four years old
100 Years Ago – 1926
L.M. Miller has received a letter from his brother, Alvah Miller, of Lapore, India, that says he and his family will sail for the United States January 15.
Mrs. Frank Schaffer died Wednesday night in the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars following complications.
The young ladies of the Holy Name Parish will give a fair of fun in the Holy Name Hall Monday evening, January 25, for the benefit of the school.
Leroy Hoops, 29, was severely injured internally Tuesday evening at Cleghorn when he attempted to crank his car. He was taken to the Methodist Hospital in Sioux City where he underwent immediate surgery.
90 Years Ago -1936
Dr. L.L. Norris of Pomeroy has purchased the office equipment and practice of the late R.P. McDonald. He will occupy the same office as Dr. McDonald and will be at work in the office January 21.
The farm sale at the A.C. Stanbrough farm last Thursday was well attended. The offering included 18 head of horses and mules, and all were sold at a good price.
About 75 members and guests were present at the regular monthly meeting of the Better Marcus Club held at the new legion hall Monday evening.
Art Olson, former coach at the Marcus school, was referee at the basketball game between Trinity and the public school Tuesday night.
85 Years Ago -1941
Mr. John Apel, who has been ill with pneumonia, has almost recovered. He is up and around and will be down town in a few days.
The Walton Shoe Shop, located under the Exchange Bank Building, is observing its first anniversary this week, having started business in Marcus just a year ago.
Two Cleghorn boys, Francis Smith and Boots Wallin, used Highway No. 5 as a rink, after a sleet storm Tuesday, and Wednesday, and skated from Cleghorn to Marcus, a distance of five miles.
Miss Dorothy Quirin, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. E.P. Quirin, is one of the 120 students invited to attend the Campus Leaders Dinner at the Iowa State Teachers College, Monday night in the Commons.
Miss Bonnie Pallesen, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Nels Pallesen, observed her fifth birthday last Sunday.

Pfc. Robert Hagey and wife arrived home Saturday evening from Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where he had been located for the past few months at Camp Shelby.
Mr. & Mrs. Emil Ebert and family were guests Friday night of Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Steffen. The evening was enjoyed by playing cards.
Mrs. Fred Paine and Mrs. Lillian Heywood entertained Bob Barnes and Lois and Margaret Pitts at dinner Monday.
Monday evening dinner uests of Mr. & Mrs. Louis Means were Mr. & Mrs. James Egar, Jimmie Whealon, Crock Bass, Clarence Sand and Vernon Donner.
Deloris Betten was honored on her 11th birthday Tuesday evening in the home of her uncle Henry Reimers.

A short service was held in the Nelson Funeral Home Saturday for Elmer Kamradt, 33, who passed away last Thursday morning.
Mrs. Merle Westerfield, formerly Mary Jean Foley of Marcus, gave birth to a six and a half pound daughter. She has been named Joan and is her second child. Mrs. Westerfield is a victim of polio and has been in an iron lung since November.
Harold Kaiser, son of Mr. & Mrs. Will Kaiser, observed his 12th birthday anniversary on Sunday.
Dinner guests Sunday in the Harley Neir home were Mrs. Mary Moeller of Remsen, and Mr. & Mrs. H.E. Neir.
A group of relatives and friends honored Mrs. Johann Miller on her birthday Friday.

Harry Baumgardner suffered a light heart attack Tuesday and is taking a few days rest on doctor’s orders. The barber shop will be closed until he is able to be back on the job.
Mr. & Mrs. Floyd Nagle were business callers in Chicago last week and attended the automobile show there.
Mrs. Elizabeth Ballard entertained at a dinner Sunday in honor of her son, Andy Ballard on his birthday anniversary.
Mr. & Mrs. Paul Jenness and daughters of Cherokee were Sunday dinner guests in the Lloyd Jones home.
Mr. & Mrs. Percy Means and Karen were Sunday dinner guests in the Vernon Means home. Supper guests were Mr. & Mrs. Harold Geringer, Chuck & Steve.

Eighteen Boy Scouts of Troop 113 enjoyed a weekend a the Scout camp at Milford. The boys were accompanied by Dale Lynn and Larry Kane.
Ginger Ann Treptow, a reservationist with Frontier Airlines in Phoenix, Arizona, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Francis Treptow of Cleghorn, has been awarded a tour of Europe as a Christmas gift of the airline.
Richard Pedersen, son of Mr. & Mrs. C.M. Pedersen of Marcus, was one of three patrolmen who were chosen to attend the inauguration of Governor Erbe and to attend the inaugural ball.
Mr. & Mrs. Leonard Nelson are the parents of a son born Monday, January 9 at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars. He weighed nine pounds, 11 ounces, and has been named Jon Aaron.
Mr. & Mrs. Wayne Sanow and Don Sanow attended the VFW party held at Remsen last Wednesday evening.

Mary Lou Irwin, daughter of Mr. Mrs. Richard Irwin of Grand Meadow, graduated January 20 from Tylers Beauty School in LeMars.
Mrs. Earl Johnson returned home Friday evening after having been hospitalized at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee for a week.
MR. & Mrs. Robert Ruden are the parents of an eight pound, eight and a half ounces son born Thursday, January 13 at the Orange City Municipal Hospital, Grandparents include Mr. & Mrs. Arnold Ruden of Marcus, and Mr. & Mrs. Ed Recker of Alton.
Mrs. Carl Heesch returned home Tuesday from Iowa City where she had spent a week in the University Hospital.
The Marcus wrestlers lost to Rock Valley, 30-24 on January 12.
55 Years Ago – 1971
Mrs. Harry Shally returned home Sunday from a six week vacation with her children in California.
Linda Lukens, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Loren Lukins of Marcus, is on the dean’s list for the 1970 fall term at Wayne State College, with a grade average of 3.4.
Mrs. Melvin Lag was confined to Sioux Valley Hospital with pneumonia for eight days, returned home Tuesday of last week.
Euchre tournament winners for the week at Snyder’s Tap were Jim Alesch and John Pederson. They emerged the victors our of the 32 tournament players.
C.P. LaFalce underwent major surgery at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Sioux City on Friday.
Mrs. Margaret Galigan was a Sunday evening supper guests in the home of Mrs. Ella Galigan.

A group of friends and relatives surprised Mr. & Mrs. Bill Bird Friday evening to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. Lunch was served by the self invited guests.
Mr. & Mrs. Harley Neir hosted a dinner Monday, January 5 in their home honoring Mrs. Elmer Reinholdt on her birthday. About a dozen guests were present.
The L.C.W. of Faith Lutheran Church held its regular meeting Thursday, January 8 with Dolores Tapper and Claudia Goodrich as hostess.
Kay Krekow, Bette Nelson, Steve Ducommun, and Jerry Fisher have been selected to sing in the Northwest Iowa Choral Festival on January 31.
Bev Nervig was selected by the MHS band to represent them as a queen candidate at Repaid City this summer.
45 Years Ago – 1981
Jim and Rose are the parents of the first baby of 1981 born to Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars, Kimberly Rose born January 3 weighing 8 pounds 14 ounces.
Marcus participants in the Northwest Iowa Honor Band are Donna Drefke, Diane Sand, Kent Martin, Mark Mitts, Linda Ducommun, Amy Lindsay, and Charles Ferrin.
Mr. & Mrs. Carl Letsche will observed their 45th wedding anniversary on Sunday, January 25, with an open house at Holy Name Hall, hosted by their children.
Clarence Beck, 84, of Marcus, died Sunday, January 11 at the Plymouth Manor Care Center in LeMars after a lengthy illness.
