105 Years Ago – 1920
The people of this city were saddened this morning to hear of the death of Mrs James Hoxsie.
Harry Mason and Lester Albaugh have leased the basement under the new Bancroft and Mason Meat Market for a new restaurant and short order house.
An effort is being made by LeMars High School to secure a special trail to carry football boys and fans to Cherokee Thanksgiving Day. This has been a custom of the Illinois Central for several years.
After serving the public as landlord of the Central Hotel for 30 years, James Delaney has decided he is too young to quit the game. The dining room was closed November 1.
100 Years Ago – 1925
Golden ears of corn are rolling into market according to local buyers, by the truck and wagon loads which dispels the belief that farms would hold corn for high markets. Ed Meylro was the first farmer to market 1925 corn at the Edmonds Longergan Elevator. He received 64 cents a bushel for corn sold October 14.
Margaret Porter who is taking a business course in Sioux City spent the weekend with her parents Mr. & Mrs. Robert Porter.
Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Beck and son, Richard, moved Monday from Remsen to their new home in Marcus. Mr. Beck is affiliated with the J.P. Beck Company which owns general stores in Marcus, Remsen, and Granville.
95 Years Ago -1930
Marcus won its second victory in four games last Friday when our team defeated Orange City 13 to 7.
Theodore Treinen, Tony Duster, and George Kramer returned Friday from a hunting trip in Canada. The three men downed three deers while hunting.
Jacob Kelsh suffered painful injuries when he caught his left hand in a corn picker Tuesday morning.
Patrick Mulvaney, well known Cherokee attorney, will give the Armistice Day address in Marcus next Tuesday, November 11.
85 Years Ago -1940
The junior class of Marcus Public School will present its play “Three Days in Grace,” in the school auditorium Friday, November 8.
Mr. & Mrs. Reginald Anderson of Minneapolis are the parents of a seven pound son, He has been named Reginald Denny.
A group of girls and boys entertained at a wiener roast at the playground last Sunday evening in honor of Don Loomus, who left Tuesday for his new home in Omaha.
Joyce Woodall reigned as queen of homecoming game between Marcus and Kingsley on Friday.Fire of undermined origin destroyed the coal shed, fuel and tools at the Nels Pallesen home Friday morning. The fire department called and prevented the fire from spreading.
80 Years Ago – 1945
The Texaco Service Station south part of Marcus is opening today under the management of Cle and Irven Galles.
Mr. & Mrs. Frank Clark celebrated their silver anniversary Sunday.
Roy Specht, Ray Flanagan, Oliver Miler, Lambert Garvin, and Keith Tentinger are among the Marcus lads to receive discharges from the armed forces this week.
The Nelson Cleaners are installed in their new location in the building on the north end of the west side of Main Street.
75 Years Ago -1950
Jethro Stowater, 84, a well known Marcus pioneer resident, passed away in a Sioux City hospital early Friday morning, October 27, following a three week illness.
The two car garage on the Lawrence Reinert place in east Marcus was badly damaged by fire Saturday afternoon. Enough damage was done so that the building will probably have to be wrecked.
A family dinner honoring Mr. & MR. Joe Alesch Sr., who celebrated their birthdays, October 27 and 30 respectively, was held in the Andy Ballard home Sunday.
Nine youths from this community were taken to Cherokee Tuesday morning where they were ordered to pay $150 damages for the malicious destruction to two farm wagons belonging to Melvin Mayer.
70 Years Ago -1955
The Marcus fire department was called to Langdon Polson farm three miles northeast of town Tuesday afternoon by a tractor fire.
Workman are busy this week building a new stucco front on Ewald’s Place a Marcus tavern operated by Ewald Ball.
Mr. & Mrs. William Challman entertained at a birthday supper Thursday evening in honor of their daughter, Mrs. Wesley Carney.
There will be no candidate for mayor on the ballot for the coming Marcus city election. It is assumed that by election date at least one group of voters will decide on a prospective mayor and organize a write in campaign.
65 Years Ago -1960
Mark Rupp, son of Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Rupp of Marcus, recently came just about as close to death as possible. Mark, in the army at Fort Ord, Washington, was stricken with cramps while swimming. He was rescued by Phil McCully, who was picnicking at the park.
Mr. & Mrs. Don Steffen and family moved into their new home Sunday. They recently purchased the home belonging to the last Mrs. T.E. Herbert.
Mrs. Joe Broblek returned home Friday and Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars where she had been a patient for the past 10 days; Mrs. George Beaton was dismissed Monday from Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars where she had been a patient for the past four weeks.
Mrs. Jack Brady entertained at a birthday party Tuesday afternoon, honoring her daughter, Teresa, on her birthday.
A group of ladies gathered at the home of Mrs. Milfred Briggs Wednesday afternoon to welcome her to the neighborhood to welcome her to the neighborhood. Following a social afternoon a delicious lunch was served by the self-invited guests.
60 Years Ago -1965
Mrs. Helen Miller, 90, the widow of the late Perry Milller passed away Monday, October 26 at LeMars following an illness of eight month.
Several men from the community recently shingled the roof on the home of Mrs. Marsh Snyder.
Marcus will again have a doctor in the very near future. Dr. George Malouf will start here early in December. The town has been without a doctor since last March when Dr. Earle Stine left to join the staff of the new Ida Grove Hospital.
There were no winners of the Marcus money last Friday evening. The names called were Alfred Wilberding and Eric Pearson.
Mr. & Mrs. Dick Dorr are the parents of a seven pound, twelve and a half ounce daughter born Monday, October 11 at Sioux Valley hospital in Cherokee. She has been named Angela Marie and has tow brothers Lenny and Kip.
55 Years Ago – 1970
David McCauley, sixth grade instructor in the Marcus schools, is in Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee following a heart attack last Thursday.
Rosemary Whealon and Jean Benjamin arrived back in Boston Thursday of last week after spending a month in Europe.
Mike Slota arrived home on Wednesday form Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee where he had been a patient for ten days.
Mr. & Mrs. Bradley Coburn are the parents of their first child, a five pound, 12 ounce daughter born Sunday, October 18 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee. She has been named Heather Rae.
John Holmes was dismissed from Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee Saturday. He had been hospitalized eight weeks as a result of burns received on his leg.
50 Years Ago -1975
Henry Cook, 82, died October 15 in a LeMars hospital following a brief illness, Services were held October 18.
Wade Nielsen placed second and Kirk Letsche placed third in the 8 year old division of the Punt, Pass and Kick Contest. Kyle Weber won second place in the age 9 division, Doug Glackin received second place in the 12 year old division, and Steve Ebert placed third.
Miss Emelia Quamen, 89, died at the Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars after a brief illness. Services were held October 21 at Peace Lutheran Church at Marcus.
Mr. & Mrs. Bud Snyder and family and Clara Bird were breakfast and supper guests Sunday in the Chet Wurth home at Remsen.
45 Years Ago – 1980
Six eighth grade students from Marcus Junior High auditioned and all were accepted for the NW Iowa Honor Bank in Storm Lake on Saturday. They were Susan Ballard, snare drum, Michele Hanson, tenor sax, Patty Kosse, clarinet. Sue Rosener, Clarinet; Stephanie Seggerman, clarinet and Sue Sand, Alto sax.
Sharon and Dale Dalton, Marcus, are the parents of a first child, a boy born Monday, October 1. at St. Luke’s Medical Center, Sioux City. He weighed eight pounds, two ounces, and is named Dusty Allan.
William Dawson, 88, of Marcus, died in Kirkland, Washington, Monday, October 13 after a lengthy illness. He was a retired farmer, having lived in the Marcus Remsen are all his life.
Donna Smith rolled a 675 series in the Saturday night mixed league at the Marcus Bowl. She bowled games of 211, 248 and 216.
The eighth grade Marcus football team finally accomplished this season what several other Marcus eighth grade teams had been working for and that was an undefeated season
