South O’Brien vs Gehlen Catholic Jays
“We had a pretty good night tonight, began South O’Brien Head volleyball coach Amy Schmidt about the home game on Tuesday October 14 against Gehlen Catholic Jays. “It was a fun match to watch, that is for sure. Both teams battled back and forth, “she said.
Gehlen won the first set 25-22. The next 3 sets went to the Wolverines in tough battles, 25-22, 25-23 and 25-23. Gehlen Jays enjoy an 82.8% win record over the Wolverines.
“I felt that we did some really good things,” she said. Adding, “We still need to be more consistent in the areas of serve reception and passing. I was pleased with our overall commitment to each other to be better and help each other as teammates. The only time we really lost focus was in set three. We became complacent and didn’t do things well fundamentally.”
Coach Schmidt described a moment for her team, “I remember calling a time out and talking real quick about being too comfortable and not playing up. The girls got things turned around and we won. Set four was no different. We battled back and forth but we never rolled over.” The match was won against the historical matchup odds.
“Our girls played well together, put more energy into their performance and it paid off. We had a few players really shine,” said Schmidt. She noted the performances this way, “Raegan (24 kills) and Chloe (7 kills) were effective at the net offensively while Taylor (4 blocks, 1 solo), Tori (5 blocks, 2 solos), and Reese (4 blocks, 1 solo) really dominated with their blocking. Chloe (27 successes with 4 aces) and Taylor (22 successes with 1 ace) served very well for us while Cassidy (13), Chloe (10), and Greta (10) came up big with defensive digs. I was pleased with Avery Halverson in the back row. She has really improved since last season and is much more confident in her abilities. Tonight she played her backrow like she practices and really helped us out! Greta ended up with 30 assists and continues to improve her game as well.”
