by Mari Radtke – Cherokee Area Economic Development Director Bill Anderson served as a host at Marcus Lumber on Tuesday September 23 to Senator Joni Ernst. Ernst as she presented Marcus Lumber Company with the delayed recognition from 2020. Anderson explained that he and a group of CAEDC supporters worked with the senator’s office in 2020 to find and nominate a worthy business for the tremendous honor of being named “Small Business of the Week.” The honor coincided with the extraordinary achievement of 100 years as a family business. Alas, COVID interfered with the celebrations but did not eliminate the honor and recognition for the company. Senator Ernst, currently a member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committee and now the chair of the Small Business and Entrepreneurship committee, a member of the Agriculture committee and a member of the Armed Services committee. As Chair of the Small Business and Entrepreneurship committee she chose to give one award to a business in each of Iowa’s 99 counties. Senator Ernst gave congratulatory words to the many members of the Leavitt family present and shared the mission and background of the “Small Business of the Week” award. She noted in her comments that the award is recognized in the formal Congressional Record. A copy of the proclamation is part of the senatorial award. Grant Leavitt gave words of gratitude on behalf of the family. Refreshments followed.
