95 Years Ago – 1915
William Britton, 82, of Davenport, recently raised 12 huge cabbages in his large garden. One of the cabbages in his large garden weighed 20 pounds and measured 19 inches across.
105 Years Ago – 1920
A twister dipped down Saturday night from the Gilbert Olson farm located seven miles south of town and did considerable damage.
Fred Knox has purchased a cigar stand located in the Commerce Building in Sioux City and will take possession October 5.
Mrs. Thomas Roberts had a very delightful experience Tuesday when she enjoyed a visit from Mrs. Minnie Hitchcock and his sister, Mrs. Anna Jemans of Hawarden.
95 Years Ago -1930
Frank Walsch has installed a complete waterworks system on his farm south of Marcus.
A Mills Troubadour automatic phonograph and radio has been installed during the week at Fred’s Place. The machine is one of the most up to date.
Dr. Alice Delaney sold her practice to G.R. Hobson of Anona, who will take possession October 1.
90 Years Ago -1935
The J.P. Beck Company of Marcus announces their fall opening of ladies ready to wear garments for Tuesday, September 24 and Wednesday, September 25.
Funeral services were held at the Christian Church Sunday for Mrs. Ben Halley, a former resident, who was killed Thursday when the Halley automobile was forced off the highway one and half miles east of Everly.
The Hamilton Hardware of Marcus will hold a special showing and demonstration of the new all-enamel Majestir range all next week.
85 Years Ago -1940
Vernon Grauer’s angus baby beef which he showed at Marcus and at the plowing match, won first in the senior angus class at the Sioux City 4-H show which included four states.
Charles Gutenkauf is much improved at the Veteran’s Hospital in Des Moines. Mrs. Gutenkauf and children have moved into their new home on Locust Street which they purchased recently.
Mrs. John Bjork passed away at her home Wednesday, September 18. Funeral Services will be held Friday.
80 Years Ago – 1945
Mr. & Mrs. Andy Fekele are the parents of a six pound, 10 ounce daughter born Sunday, September 23 at St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City. This is the couple’s first child.
Martin Nelson has purchased form H.A. Huesenkveldt a building which for a number of years was occupied by Hey’s Harness Shop. After redecorating and repairing the building, Mr. Nelson will move the Panatorium within the next month.
J.L. Jenkins passed away Monday evening at the hospital in Hartley. He is the father of Art Jenkins of Marcus.
75 Years Ago -1950
Charles Kracke, 60, a life long resident of this community, passed away at his home following a stroke.
Paul Hoeppner purchased the Marcus Grocery and was given immediate possession Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Hoeppner and their daughter, Susan, are from Arnolds Park.
Services for Frank Rubbert, who passed away at his home Wednesday will be held Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church.
The Aberdeen angus baby beef of Faye Mugge of Cleghorn, grand champion of the Marcus Fair, brought 47 cents a pound at the baby beef sale Thursday.
Mrs. S.A. Smorawski will sell her household goods at public auction at the residence two blocks southeast of Holy Name Church Saturday afternoon. She recently sold her home to Joe Kramer of Remsen.
Services for Mrs. Louis Bierman, 80, were held Tuesday afternoon, September 12 at Germantown and burial was in St. John’s Cemetery.

Robert Olson left Wednesday morning for ST. Louis, Missouri, where he will attend Concordia Seminary.
Friends here have received word that Donald Holtzman of College Park, Maryland, is in critical condition as the result of an automobile accident. He is the husband of the former Vesta Pepple.
Mr. & Mrs. A.L. Pitts were honored at a family dinner Sunday, September 11 in the municipal building in Marcus in observance of their 55th wedding anniversary.
Mr. & Mrs. Ray Simons and Randy were dinner and afternoon guests Sunday in the Russel Mouw home.
The first meeting of the new club year of the Marcus Women’s Club met Wednesday in the home of Mrs. Clarence Beck.

Mrs. Albert Anderson, 86, died Tuesday evening at her home in Marcus after a short illness. Funeral services will be at Grace Methodist Church on Saturday.
Ben Bock of Marcus has been made a lifetime member of Major Kirk Camp No. 12 of the Veterans of the Spanish American War.
Rev. E.J. Plummer returned home Tuesday from Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars where he had been a patient for a week suffering from a server case of asthma.
Mr. & Mrs. Merle Treinen were pleasantly surprised Friday evening when a host of relatives and friends arrived at their home to help them celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary.
The Birthday club met Thursday, September 8 in the home of Mrs. Ervin Mayer with 10 guests present.

Mr. & Mrs. LeRoy Brownmiller are the parents of a daughter, Debra Jean, born Thursday, September 9, at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Sandy Sand won one of the $25 Marcus money prizes given away last Friday evening. Other names were called but were not present.
The new commander of the Marcus post of the American Legion, Clarence “Bud” Van Velzen, was installed at last Thursday nights meeting.
Mr. & Mrs. Charles Beaton are the parents of an eight pound, 11 ounce daughter born Friday, September 10 at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee. She has been named Sue Nadine.
Trinity Lutheran Ladies Aid met in the church parlors Thursday afternoon, September 2 with Delores Grauer as hostess.

Mr. & Mrs. LuVerne Nelson became the parents of a baby boy on Tuesday, September 1at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee. He has been named Bruce Robert,
Mr. & Mrs. Art Nelson arrived home Saturday evening from a two and half week vacation to Portland, Oregon.
Jospeh Alesch, 89, a 70 year resident of the community, passed away Wednesday at the LeMars hospital. He is survived by the widow, six daughters, one son and one sister.
The third annual Seggerman reunion was held Sunday, August 9 at the shelter house in Kingsley, There were 69 present with three guests.
Mr. & Mrs. Emmet Ryan announces the engagement of their daughter Rose Ann to James Alfred Sanow, son of Mr. & Mrs. William Sanow of Remsen.
50 Years Ago -1975
Thomas Delaney, 64 of Marcus, died September 7 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
New teachers this year include: Miss Lowe, math; Mr. Gray, instrumental music; and Mr. Welle, vocal.
Mrs. Ed Meylor is a patient in the extended care facility at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars.
Joan Seggerman and Curtis Nims were united in marriage on May 31 at Holy Name Church in Marcus. Parents of the couple are Mr. & Mrs. Bobbie Seggerman of Marcus and Dr. and Mrs Robert Nims of Frederick, Maryland.
The Marcus grandspinners will mark their fourth anniversary with a dance at the elementary school building on Tuesday, September 16.
45 Years Ago – 1980
Mrs. Amanda Wittkop, wife of the Rev. E.L. Wittkop, passed away early Friday morning, September 5. Services were held Monday, September 8 at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake.
Guy Rae, who is now a resident at the Cherokee Villa, will be 90 years old Saturday, September 13.
Winners at the Hawkeye grand opening were: Pony keg-Warren Weber and Gaylen Rupp, case of beer – Doug Roseen, Brian Nelson and Betty Moser, carton of cigarettes – Julie Radcliffe, Dave Alesch, Sharon Rupp, Bon Hanson and Debbie Hagey, 6 pack of beer or pop – Millow Miller, Kellie Alesch, Ron Burnakow, Joan Bryant and Frosty Drefke.
Matthew Olson, son of Mr. & Mrs. Mike Olson, celebrated his first birthday Saturday, August 30 in the home of his godmother Mr. & Mrs. R.O. Malec, in Arlington, TX.
Peace Lutheran Ladies Aid met Thursday, September 4 at the church parlors with Betty Hesse and Dora Shefstad as hostesses.
