110 Years Ago – 1914
135 loads of ice were taken from the creek at the Grauer farm this winter by farmers of the Amherst vicinity.
Charles Woodall attended an auto show in Sioux City Wednesday.
Mr. and Mrs. James Rae left on Monday night for a visit at Farley.
H.E. Neir left Monday night on a business trip to Rockford, IL.
T.J. Delaney of Rock Rapids was in town last Tuesday. He brought his son, Arthur, who will work in the post office.
100 Years Ago – 1924
Mr. & Mrs. Ernest Benson were the victim of a pleasant surprise on Saturday evening. About twenty of their relatives and friends came to spend the evening with them. A lunch was served by the self-invited guests.
The Marcus girls basketball team lost to Rock Rapids 26-20 in the Rock Rapids tournament. Every precaution was taken by the referee to prohibit roughness, there being 47 fouls being called in the game.
Fire completely destroyed the farm home of Dale Pitts at the A.L. Pitts farm, March 16.
95 Years Ago -1929
Marcus Chapter of Eastern Star will observe its twenty-fifth anniversary next Tuesday, having been organized in 1904.
Funeral service for Mrs. E.V. Ferrin were held Thursday afternoon in the Christian Church.
Ed Glines as rented the building adjoining his shop and will use it as a shoe shining parlor.
Marcus has the honor of holding the second round of the state declamatory contest on Friday evening March 15 Nine schools will participate in the contest.
James Williams, one of Marcus most respected citizens, passed away on Monday, March 11 after a brief illness.
85 Years Ago -1939
F. I. Goodborn Post 517 of the American Legion will celebrate the twentieth birthday of the American Legion on March 15.
Next Saturday Mr. & Mrs. R.E. Smith will open a new cafe in Marcus in the building formerly occupied by the Kruse Meat Market.
Mr. & Mrs. Fred Dorr were honored at a surprise party March 3.
An opening bowling tournament will begin at Marcus Recreation on March 24. More than twenty entries have been received from other towns and many more are expected.
Baseball practice will begin soon in preparation for a schedule of 8 or 10 games it is announced by Coach Manning.
80 Years Ago – 1944
J.W. Nield will be acting chairman in the Red Cross drive for the Marcus branch of the Cherokee Chapter.
1st Lt. Francis Brady has completed his 25 missions with the Army Air Corps in England according to word received by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. James Brady.
Mrs. Elizabeth Ballard and daughter Grace returned from California recently after visiting several weeks with their daughter and sister, Hazel.
Mrs. Roger Leavitt left Wednesday evening to visit with her son, Roger, Jr. who is stationed at Fort Benning, GA.
75 Years Ago -1949
Another new business place will open in Marcus. Clark Cook, who has been with the Dorr Farm Service Industries for the past several years, will open the Marcus produce in the Nield Building.
Mrs. Mary Collins, 60, of Sioux City, and former resident of Marcus, passed away suddenly at St. Joseph’s hospital after a long illness.
Lillian Rosburg and March Snyder posted a score of 1188 to win first money in the annual mixed doubles tournament at Rex’s Alleys which ended Sunday morning.
Two carloads of soybeans will leave Marcus next Tuesday, beaded for the hungry people of Europe. The cars will be decorated with banners telling the country of its origins and the names of the towns in the country.
Gladus and Lyda Williams received word Tuesday by telegram that will Henry, a former Marcus resident, passed away in Emmetsburg, Iowa.
70 Years Ago -1954
The seasons worst storm struck this area last Friday afternoon and night, accompanied by a variety of extremely unpleasant climatic manifestations.
Drs. M.F. Joynt and R.J. Joynt of LeMars will be leaving for a trip to their native Ireland.
During the blizzard, the Fire Department was called to the Frank Hewicker farm to put out a broader house fire. Loss has been estimated at 800.
65 Years Ago -1959
Monday evening, for the first time in 32 years, the board of directors of the Marcus Independent school district organized without Mrs. W.L. Gund as a member. Mrs. Gund was appointed on January 1927 and has been re-elected to that office every two years since that time.
W. Roger Rae, formerly of Marcus, has been named to the Successful Farming magazine advertising sales staff in New York City.
Melvin Dorr was elected president of the board of directors of the Marcus Independent school district.
The Senior class of the Marcus Public School is holding a dance Friday from 8 to 11:30 with admission at 35 cents.
Mr. & Mrs. Albert Grauer were pleasantly surprised Tuesday evening when neighbors gathered to give them a housewarming in their newly built home.
60 Years Ago -1964
Leon Walling of Sioux City, and a former native of Cleghorn and a graduate of the Marcus High School, has announced that he is filing for the Republican nomination for Congressman from the Sixth District.
The Cherokee County Board of Supervisors last Thursday adopted a resolution that means that County Road, known locally as old 143, will be surfaced from highway 3 to County Road L this summer.
Glen Miller showed slides of this year’s Tournament of Roses as the program of Tuesday meeting of the rotary Club.
An advertisement in this issue of the News announces that the Dew Drop Inn will open for business here next Saturday. Operator of the tavern and restaurant is Shorty Brownmiller.
Miss Barbara Johnson, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Harold C. Johnson of Marcus, received her nurse’s cap at St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing.

Harold Means has purchased the Elmer Douvia 80 acres farm north of Marcus.
Dr. George Wiedemeier, 57, a Marcus veterinarian for about 30 years, passed away in a Sioux City hospital after a long illness.
The Marcus Rescue Unit was called to the home of Jim Hoefling when their daughter Lynn became suddenly ill following a siege of the flu. She was taken to Sioux Valley Hospital and was released Tuesday.
Mr. & Mrs. Floyd Walker were honored by neighbors and relatives at a farewell party at their home before they moved to Spirit Lake, Iowa.
50 Years Ago -1974
Nancy Carnes, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Robert Carmes, was appointed to serve as a asst. pledge trainer in the Upsilon Gamma Chapter of Chi Omega at the University of South Dakota.
Anna Mary Reker, 85 of Spencer, Iowa passed away at the Spencer hospital following a lingering illness.
Junior Girl Scout Troop 53 arranged a display in the window of the Jaycee hall in honor of Girl Scout Week.
Grover Beaman, 78 passed away at an Aurora hospital.
Mr. & Mrs. Henry Bates returned last Wednesday to their home in Rochester, NY, after a two week visit in the home of her mother, Mrs. Marie Pallesen.
45 Years Ago – 1979
What started out as a drizzle, advanced to a steady downpour and then proceeded to turn into one of the worst snowstorms to hit the tri-state area in years and left stranded motorist that must have run into the hundreds in our area alone.
Margaret and Fred Nelson and Mildred and Roger Leavitt entertained supper guests at the Leavitt home in honor of the birthdays of Barabra Moats and Harley Neir.
Seventy-two present and former residents of Marcus attended a reunion picnic in Phoenix on Sunday, February 25.
40 Years Ago –1984
Marcus is Lambin time..at least at the Tom Hueser farm it is. A ewe on the Hueser farm had quadruplets. Here just about twelve years ago a similar event happened on the Hueser farm. Then too, the mother ewe gave birth to a four some.
Mrs. Eva Dubois, 80 of Marcus passed away Thursday in a nursing home in Remsen.
Henry Dorr observed his 93rd birthday on Saturday with many guests attending.
35 Years Ago – 1989
Word has been received that Mrs. Doris (Hinspeter) Weidow of Ceylon, MN passed away Sunday afternoon.
Brett Meister, Sports Information Director at Westmar College, has been selected to work for the Department of Communications during the NAIA men’s and Women’s basketball tournaments in Kansas City.
Tom and Doris Dawson of Washta will celevrate their 25th wedding anniversary with an open house.
Gross Inc. announce they will hold their annual Opwn House and Customer Appreciation on Thursday, March 16.
