Five MMCRU students competed their way to state competition March 1-3 at the Iowa State Fair Grounds. A lot of competitors were there. According to Alspeth Hogg, Iowa is one of the most competitive states and the Midwest is the most competitive area in terms of Archery in Schools program. “The state level is huge and it is extremely competitive,” said Hogg.
MMCRU participants were Senior Brayden Olson, Junior Caitlin Wetter, Sophomore Brianna Schuetz, Sophomore Joshua Doelliger and Senior Elspeth Hogg. Joshua was the only archer from MMCRU to shoot Bullseye. Brayden, Caitlin, Brianna and Elspeth all entered the 3D competition.
Bullseye is a very tradition target shooting. Three rounds at 10 meters and 3 rounds at 15 meters. Aim for the middle.
The 3D competition incorporates six different animals to shoot at; turkey, coyote, bear, antelope, deer and ram. The animal targets change size, distance and angle.
Each of the participants joined for different reasons but they all love the sport. There were no awards brought home this year, but each participant was satisfied with their scores. Goals were set for next year with the seniors very pleased they made it to state for their senior year.
