110 Years Ago – 1914
Ray Peters had some bad luck last Monday when he broke his wrist.
Mrs. C.P. Dorr submitted to an operation at Iowa City hospital last Sunday and it is indicated that she is getting along fine.
100 Years Ago – 1924
Joe Hobbs last Saturday purchased of George Pimperton 21 head of cattle for which he paid $2,710.
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Nield were host and hostess to a few friends at their home Sunday evening. About six couples were present to enjoy the six o’clock dinner to which all had tributed and which the ladies helped to prepare.
95 Years Ago -1929
The Marcus High School basketball team won the county tournament at Washta Friday evening winning from Cleghorn with a close 19-18 score.
On Thursday evening another of Marcus citizens, Emil Digel, passed away after an illness of only a few hours.
Edward Jaminet and Peter Ryan were hosts at a sleighing party Friday evening.
Frank Crocker tipped the Sioux City market with thirty head of hogs Wednesday.
Last Monday a loud speaker was installed in the high school room so that children of Holy Name could enjoy the inaugural program. Interest was aroused when the martial air of “Hail to the Chief” was played during President Hoover’s address.
A number of friends and neighbors gathered in the home of Mr. & Mrs. O.K. Barkley, March 13 to help them celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary.
85 Years Ago -1939
The auction sale held at the Charles Woodall farm Monday was well attended and things sold at a good price.
B.J. Becl, Ira Hinspeter and Carl Miller were on the list of names drawn for the March term of court.
A fire of unknown origin started in the home of Harry Miller Thursday night. The fire department answered the call, but considerable damage was done.
Kenneth Pallesen is a medical patient in the Sacred Heart Hospital at LeMars this week.
Nagle Brothers announce the skating rink will re-open after being closed due to spring epidemics.
F.L. Lawhead, local plumber, brought a 147 year old book written by William Penn to the News office this week.
Dr. M.F. Joynt was master of ceremonies at the 20th birthday party of the F.I. Goodburn Post No 517 held in the Legion Hall for members and guests.
80 Years Ago – 1944
The Marcus Fire Department answered a fire call at the Walter Letsche home southwest of Marcus Saturday.
Hans Rasmussen and family bought and have moved into the house known as the McNelie Home.
The Marcus Fire Department was called into service Tuesday morning at the Rev. E.L. Wittkop farm where a brooder house had caught fire.
Irvin Simons, Jr., 17, years old son of Mr. & Mrs. Irvin Simons of near Sheldon, passed away Sunday morning, February 27 at the Good Samaritan Hospital.
75 Years Ago -1949
Ruth Roepke of Grand Meadow received a fractured leg in the basketball game played here last Friday evening between Marcus and Grand Meadow junior high teams.
The farmers day staged by the Nielsen Electric Shop here last Saturday proved to be one of the most successful occasions of its type ever held in Marcus, with 300 people attending.
Mrs. Howard Johnson is teaching third grade in the public school this week. She is substituting for Mrs. Dahlgren who is out of town.
The former Radio Electric here has added a line of hardware to its stock and plans to go into that line extensively.
Mary Ellen Kelly has been honored by having a quotation from her column, Kellys Corner, reprinted in the first appearance of a new feature in the Cosmopolitan.
70 Years Ago -1954
Wendell Grauer and W.E. Witter were elected Monday to the School Board. Mark Bancroft and George Wilson were without opposition.
The Marcus Fire Department was called to the Myron Dorr farm three miles west and four south of Marcus when a shed of straw was burning.
A son was born to Mr. & Mrs. Vernon Donner Wednesday morning.
65 Years Ago -1959
Loren Stowater was elected chief of the Marcus Fire Department at the organization annual election.
The front of the J & D Cafe in Marcus was remodeled Tuesday evening, A.I. Birch doing the work.
Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Brady of Remsen announce the arrival of a son born Saturday, February 22 at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Mr. & Mrs. Charles Swindle of Cherokee will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary with an open house Sunday, March 8.
60 Years Ago -1964
A sustantial fund has been given toward a memorial for the late Marvin Hanson by his schoolmates and facility of the community high school. The memorial will be in the form of a plaque to be placed in the high school on which the name of the outstanding sophomore athlete will be engraved each year.
The Marcus Fire Department was called Monday evening to help subdue a grass fire on the Shafer farm west of Cleghorn.
The Francis Delperdang family moved to their new home on a farm two miles northwest of Oyens over the weekend. Francis had ought the old home place.
Kathleen Cosgrove of Meriden was among 36 Iowa State University students who left Friday for the 11th annual Washington United Nations Seminar.
55 Years Ago -1969
Mr. & Mrs. Bolfik and Lyle Schlenger took four wrestler to the state tournament. Brian Hogue, Dan Sclenger, Al Carlson and Steve Cline.
Roy Johnson, 77, of Cleghorn passed away at Cherokee following a short illness.
A farrowing house burned on the farm near Cherokee tenanted by Gerald Ogren Thursday of last week with 13 sows and 130 pigs lost in the blaze.
50 Years Ago -1974
John Clarkson has announced his retirement from the Marcus Volunteer Fire Department and the Marcus Rescue Squad. John has been a member of the Fire Department for a total 36 years, joining the organization in 1938.
The Marcus Fire Department held their annual election of officers with all incumbent officers elected to another term Jack Clarkson, Fire Chief; Jack Shea, Assistant Fire Chief; and Fred Wilkens as Secretary-Treasurer.
45 Years Ago – 1979
The Marcus High School basketball cheerleader are Gina Busch, Robin Hanson, Julie Goth, Deb Hagey, Judy Glackin, and Marilyn Nervig.
Mrs. Bert Nielsen, 79, of Orange City passed away in an Orange City hospital after a brief illness.
Ed Driesen, salesman at Gross, Inc of Marcus, returned from Louisville, KY where he placed in the Louisville, KY, Invitational National Tractor Pull.
40 Years Ago –1984
The Board of Advisors for the Outstanding Young Women of America awards program announced that Dawn Mayer, Mary Elizabeth Leavitt and Colleen Whealon have been selected for inclusion in the 1983 edition of Outstanding Young Women of America.
With 25 seconds remaining in the 4th quarter and the score knotted at 41 all, Alan Reuter his a baseline jumper to give Marcus a 43-41 victory over Primghar.
Last Monday Donna Leavitt, Bonnie Collins and Martha Simons were luncheon guests of Bev Drefke and Jane Ebert at Bishops Cafe.
35 Years Ago – 1989
Mr. & Mrs. Fred Pottobaum of Alton announce the engagement of their daughter, MaryEllen to Paul Wilkens of Marcus, son of Mr. & Mrs. Fred Wilkens of Marcus. The couple is plannina a September 16th wedding.
Paul Rassel suffered minor injuries when his semi was involved in an accident west of Cherokee on Highway 3.
Bev Alesch and son Gerry competed in the Young American Bowling Alliance Family Double State Finals in Newtown, Iowa.
