Golf Course Clubhouse Nearing Completion

Beginning about 2021 the Marcus Golf Course grounds and structures were sold to the City of Marcus. The eleven-member golf course board leases the property from the city and operates the business a golf course and seasonal food service. The current annual lease, paid for from operational revenue is $4800.
Over the course of the roughly three years, the golf course board (board) developed its plan to replace the 65 year old, seasonal clubhouse. The plan they devised replaced the aged structure with a new, year-round facility in the same location.
Tim Holmes is one of the board members involved in helping with creating this plan. He is took the lead in organizing the fundraising effort and is supported by the other board members as well as city officials. “It’s been a lot of hard work,” he said. Early estimates for the cost of the project reached above $1.5 million. The fundraising efforts have been in full force for about a year and a half. To date, the effort to raise the necessary funds has reached approximately $1.35 million in funds and in commitment for the 4700 or 4800 square foot structure. A $300,000 grant from an “Enhance Iowa” grant awarded on May 4, 2023 and is included.
Plans for the new clubhouse include a year-round restaurant and a private party room with seating for up to 40 people. The kitchen will continue to be sublet. Negotiations are underway for the coming year. Completion of the project is anticipated for late March 2024 or early April. Holmes said, “It’s gone smooth so far,” referring to the construction project. A grand opening is being planned for early May.
Looking into a crystal ball, the board is researching the idea of a virtual winter golf league. The current thinking is to have 1, possibly 2 golf simulators during the off-season. The idea is to add year-round use to the clubhouse and generate year-round revenue.
Holmes reported to the City Council a special meeting February 13. Holmes reported to council that they have raised about $1.3 million to date. Discussion with council was for the funds still need would be paid by the city and added to the annual lease. According to Holmes the golf board will continue its fundraising efforts and work diligently to repay the anticipated $400,000 in 3 to 5 years. Alyssa Herbold, City Attorney, would be drafting a lease proposal.
