110 Years Ago – 1914
The officers of Holy Name Church of Marcus took an option of five ares of land in the southeast part of Marcus. They will erect a new church building, a school building and a parish home.
Lucille Twogood and Lillian Alvine entertained at a Valentine party at the latters home Saturday evening.
Ed Keleher stated work Monday putting in a new heating system in the Peters Garage.
Camellia Evans returned from Sibley Thursday evening where she had been visiting her cousin. She reports a good time.
100 Years Ago – 1924
The Marcus girls won 14-5 from Quimby February 24. Elizabeth Dorr led the scoring with seven field goals.
About 100 mothers and daughters attended the first mother daughter banquet at the Methodist Church, February 15.
L.J. McGivern favored the Holy Name students and faculty with a very interesting talk on Abraham Lincoln on Wednesday.
The junior class of the public school will present a mystery comedy, “Am I Intruding” at the opera house on Feb 29.
95 Years Ago -1929
Robert Garlinhouse sustained a deep gash in the instep as the results of striking his foot with an axe.
Mr. & Mrs. James Cronin are moving this week from LeMars and will make their home on a farm north of Marcus.
The John Foley family will be in quarantine for scarlet fever for another month. The little daughter contracted the disease at about the time the quarantine was to be removed.
Wednesday, February 27 was a happy occasion for Mr. & Mrs. Adam Grauer, when they observed their 40th wedding anniversary.
85 Years Ago -1939
Catholic churches throughout the world are participating in rites of mourning for Pope Llus XI who died last week.
About 50 friends and neighbors gathered in the John Harms home on Friday evening to help them celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary.
The Marcus basketball quintet ended the 1939 season by defeating the Meriden Cagers 28-19 on the Marcus floor.
Charles Woodall will hold a public sale at his farm about 5 miles southeast of Marcus on February 27.
The Cherokee County spelling contest will be held at the Methodist Church in Cherokee. Lawrence Slaghter will represent the public school and Betty Pedersen Holy Name.
80 Years Ago – 1944
Lt. Dale Barnes, 33. gave his life in the service of his country while on active duty in Italy.
Fred Ritchie, well known Marcus farmer, has announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for state senator from the 46th district.
The Marcus Volunteer Fire Department answered a fire call a the Walter Letsche home south of Marcus.
Hans Rasmussen and family have moved into the house known as the McNellie home.
Ray Tritz well known manager of the Areo Restaurant, Bowling Alleys and Recreation Center of Remsen, has expanded his business interests to include purchase of the Grand Theater building and equipment owned by Fred Kock of Remsen.
Old man winter weather showing us that he hasn’t closed up shop for the duration, descended down on us last Wednesday night giving us several inches of snow and shoving the mercury down below 20 degrees.
Robert Reece, 62 and former residents of Marcus, was fatally injured at his rooming quarters in the New Rex Hotel of Sioux City when the hotel was swept by a $600 fire Monday, February 14.
75 Years Ago -1949
Ellis Holmes isn’t worried about any shortage of beef this coming summer. He has started raising 800Hy-Line cockerels for spring fries.
Mrs. Virgil Wirt and son Maurice left for Okinawa to join Capt Wirt who is stationed at the Naha Air Base with the 26th Fighter Squadron, 51st Fighter Group, as a jet pilot.
Mrs. Lillian Peters, a former pioneer resident of Marcus, who now lives in Florida will observe her 85th birthday.
Mrs. A.C. Stanbrough received word Sunday of the death of her brother, John Birch, 80, of Stockton, Illinois.
The Claus Schroeder residence across the street east of Marcus public school will be sold.
70 Years Ago -1954
The first snow of the winter arrived in Marcus this morning. Although neighboring communities have had snow several times, the immediate vicinity of Marcus has been almost entirely without snow.
Henry Specht, 71, passed away February11 after an extended illness.
The Co-op Oil Company grossed close to a million dollars according to the annual report. Over 200 shareholders were present at the annual meeting.
65 Years Ago -1959
J.O. Whealon, Marcus real estate broker reports the sale of town Marcus homes. Harold Geringer has purchased the George Johnson property a block west of Main Street, and Mr. Johnson has bought the Mrs. Mary Means home in east Marcus.
A. E. Johnson 81, lifelong resident of this community passed away in the LeMars hospital following a short illness.
Mrs. Leland Hogue is a patient at Sacred Heart Hospital at LeMars with a sever siege of the flu.
Bert Rubbert, 80 passed away Wednesday evening at the FVH.
The Commercial Club committee in charge of the giveaway of Marcus Money reports that an amazing total of $4,085.30 worth of prizes has been given in the Marcus trading public since the project was started about 22 months ago.
The Marcus Panatorium this week is announcing pick-up and delivery service for the town of Marcus.
60 Years Ago -1964
The gas war finally reached Marcus this week, after just about having the town surrounded for some time and bringing local gas sales to a minimum. By general agreement the Marcus stations went down 23.9 cents for regular gas.
Mrs. Roy Fry, 68 former resident of Marcus passed away at a Sioux City hospital following an illness of six weeks.
Mrs. Zeo Dill won the electric toaster given away at Clarkson’s IGA at its 19th birthday party last weekend and Mrs. Charles Knudson the electric tooth brush.
Mrs. Carl Johnson, 62, a lifelong resident of Marcus passed away Sunday following a lingering illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Jack Clarkson are parents of a son born Tuesday, February 4 at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
55 Years Ago -1969
The January issue of The Aerogram, published by the Iowa Aeronautics Commission, announced a new air strip in the Marcus Community. Officially named “Willie’s Bomber Patch,” it is privately owned by Wilbur Hohbach southwest of town.
Memorial services for Major Charles Rosburg were held in the base chapel on Edwards Air Force Base in California Friday.
The lights will be on at the Marcus bowling alley next Saturday night, according to plans of its new owners, Wilbur Husman and Marvin Ebert.
Rocky Bork became seriously ill Saturday evening before the game at Freeman, SD. He was taken to Hawarden hospital suffering with a lung infection.
Mrs. William Berger won the top award in the Pork Casserole Contest for ladies in the tri-state area.
50 Years Ago -1974
Mrs. Bob Specht, Mrs. Pete Tesch and Mrs. Clarence Eldridge attended the basketball game in Paullina Saturday night.
Doug Kuehn, son of Mr. & Mrs. Carroll Kuehn of Marcus, flew via San Francisco to Hawaii. He also spent some time in Fiji Islands and Sydney, Australia on his way to Canberra, Australia where he is enrolled at the Australian National university.
45 Years Ago – 1979
Mr. & Mrs. Cecil Dorr, son Jeff and Ruth Hazen, a sister of Mrs. Dorr returned recently from a trip abroad.
The Marcus Veterinary Clinic announces that John Mayer of Marcus has joined their staff as veterinarian recently.
Charles Gipe, son of Mr. & Mrs. Larry Gipe of Marcus had the misfortune of having the car he was driving demolished by the Illinois Central Freight train when the car got stuck in the deep snow ruts at the train crossing east of Marcus.
40 Years Ago –1984
Fredcerick K-Products manager, presented Larry Wurth, presented of the Marcus Community Betterment, Inc., a check in the amount of $10,000. This will help the fund drive to remodel and equip the community center.
“Marcus Bowl” will be hosting “Superbowl 84” a special bowlathon tournament sponsored by the Junior League and Marcus Bowl to help Iowans afflicted with Muscular Dystrophy.
Catherine Muller was honored with open house to celebrate her 90th birthday Sunday in the new Marcus Community Center.
Harm Seggerman Jr., of Marcus passed away at Floyd Valley Hospital after a brief illness.
Mrs. Ray Drefke has been elected president of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association Auxiliary at their annual convention.
