100 Years Ago – 1924
Dr. H.J. Hipschen well-known Marcus veterinarian, died in the Bellvue Hospital Monday.
The local market reports for the weeks are as follows: corn 63 cents; oats 39 cents; hots, $6.20; cream 48 cents, hens 18 cents, spring chickens 15 cents, butter 43 cents and eggs 30 cents.
One Wednesday, February 13 the sophomores of Holy Names school served a cafeteria dinner in the physics laboratory, which was appropriately decorated with Valentine colors. The proceeds will be devoted to the purchasing of new books for the library.
Cherokee County farmers are now testing their seed corn for an indication of vitality.
95 Years Ago -1929
Lou Johns, farmer in this vicinity, was recently elected president of the Producers Commission Association at Sioux City.
“Fred’s Place” has reopened in the White Front building on Main Street.
Donald Gray, Madge Barnes and Catherine Woods will represent the Marcus public school in the sub-country declamatory contest.
Mrs. W.E. Rose, resident of Cherokee county for 57 years and the first white woman to settle in Marcus Township, passed away January 27th.
Lou McDaniel and family are moving to Cleghorn. Mr. McDaniel is employed in a barbershop in LeMars.
The Alice Collins and Folerence Carey schools enjoyed a Valentine party Thursday afternoon.
Emmett Ryan nearly had a serious accident when the alcohol in is car ran out on the engine and caught fire. He smothered the fire with a shovel he had with him.
85 Years Ago -1939
Cherokee County farmers and farm owners have sealed 1,429,911 bushels of corn since December 10, according to figures released today by the Cherokee County Agriculture conservation Association.
Meriden will be host of the Cherokee County Basketball Tournament which begins Thursday at 7:30 in the Meriden High School gym and continues until the championship team is presented to trophy on Saturday night.
On Saturday evening this community was saddened by the death of John Greff.
Frances Meylor is employed as a relief operator at the telephone office.

Walter Barnes, well-known Marcus resident, passed away on Tuesday at his home.
Grand Meadow High School first and second teams will meet the Marcus High School squads on the local floor Friday evening.
Among the forty-nine reclassified family men of Cherokee to be called at any time are Frances Zimmer, Harley Wingert, Joseph Delaney, Edward Strief, Raymond Gates, Walter Garvin, Carl Klingborg, Harold Geringer and Ralph Grauer all of Marcus.
75 Years Ago -1949
This week Nagle Bros. Signed a contract with the General Motors Coperation in Detroit, MI and were appointed direct dealers for this territory for Chevrolet cars and trucks.
An oil burning heating apparatus in the basement of the Methodist parsonage got out of control and flared up about eleven Tuesday evening.
Edward Miller and Ivan Nielsen of Cherokee are preparing for the opening of a plumbing shop here in the building south of the telephone office.
Doris Meyer, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Meyer, has purchased Beverly’s Beauty Shop at Washta.
The Marcus Plumbing company located in the building south of the telephone office is now open for business.

Installation services for the Rev. J.E. Jacobsen, new pastor of the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Marcus, will be held in the church this coming Sunday evening.
Mike Green returned home after spending a year and a half in Germany with the armed forces and working as a mechanic.
The Marcus Library reports they have lent 18,232 books during the year of 1953

The month of January has been approximately 20 percent colder than the previous January according to official temperature reports of the US Weather Bureau at Sioux City.
Alva Froehlich, 44 of Cleghorn, died Wednesday morning at the LeMars hospital where he had been aken when his condition became critical. His death followed a long battle against an incurable malady.
A free dance will be held Friday, February 6 from 9 pm on. The dance is sponsored by the Legion Auxiliary and will be held in the Legion Hall. The dance is to help send a girl to Girl’s State.
Donald Kerr, senior at Holy Name High School, is the 1959 winner of the Bausch & Lomb Honary Science Award Medal.
Justice of the Peace Elmore Wallin reported that he performed his first wedding ceremony Sunday afternoon.

Ray J. Sand attended a feed and fertilizer sales training workshop in Des Moines, January 30-31.
A dinner party was held Saturday evening at the Arcadia in Sioux City honoring the 25th wedding anniversary of Mr. & Mrs. Ellis Holmes.
John Mackowski, 48, a former resident of the Marcus community passed away at his home in Detroit.

Lea Trenin has been named 1969 Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow for Marcus High Schoool following a test she took along with other senior girls. She will be awarded a special Betty Crocker silver charm.
Captain and Mrs. W.H. Ducommun are the parents of a daughter born Monday, January 27 at the Home Hospital in Lafayette, Indiana.
William Dorr, 70, a lifelong resident of the Marcus community, passed away at Cherokee Monday afternoon after a short illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Victor Blessing of Luverne were honored on their 40th wedding anniversary December 28.
50 Years Ago -1974
A fire in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Fred Ducommun early Monday morning damaged early Monday morning damaged the kitchen and utility area and cause extensive smoke damage throughout the house.
Three Marcus area young people have won high honors in contests sponsored by the Daughters of Revolution. The winners were Sally Jenness, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Merritt Jenness, rural Pierson, Barbara Cronin, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Cronin of rural Marcus and Susan Knudson, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Knudson.
Ben Beck, 97, passed away early Wednesday morning at the Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars following a lingering illness. He was the oldest resident of Marcus.
45 Years Ago – 1979
Winners of the Pinewood Derby are best design John Kaufmann, third place Robert Behning, second place Brian Thomas and first place Bobby Meylor.
The Marcus Veterinary Clinic announced that John Mayer of Marcus has joined their staff as a veterinarian.
Rodney Snyder, son of Mr. & Mrs. Lyle Snyder of Marcus had the misfortune of breaking his thumb on his right hand Sunday evening while roller skating.
