110 Years Ago – 1914
Ben Delaney was appointed last week by President Wilson as the next postmaster of Marcus. The term of James Rae, the retiring postmaster, expired on January 20.
John Knox has returned from Minneapolis where he attended the 24th annual convention of the Northwest Lumbermen.
The farmers Institute Convention for the year of 1914 will convene at Cherokee next week.
Dr. A.F. Nafziger has returned from Florida and will begin practicing his profession in Sioux City.
Peter Iverson advertises fresh milk delivered in Marcus for six cents a quart. Parties coming after it may buy it for five cents a quart.
The H.B. McLaughlin Cafe has purchased a beautiful electric piano at a cost of $500.
At a sale of the Wirt estate a yearling colt sold for $225, cows sold as high as $69 and calves brought $32 a head.
P.C. Derthick sold his residence property to Dr. F.C. Loomis and purchased the J.A. Keys house.
105 Years Ago -1919
Irene Dunn, a student at Holy Name School, received a Lincoln medal as she was proclaimed the winner of the Lincoln essay contest.
Work on the raising of $70,000 building fund was started Monday by the committee appointed for that purpose by St. Mary’s parish in Remsen.
Services were held Saturday for Mrs. Katherine Knudson, 81, a long time resident of this community.
100 Years Ago – 1924
The Christmas Seal campaign in Marcus amounted to $51.34.
J.D. Lake and R.J. Pattison have purchased a grocery store in Kingsley, known as the Corner Store.
W.W. Bryant held a closing our sale at his farm near Cleghorn and will move to Sioux City.
Miss Ruth Alice Hamilton has gone to Chicago to enter the Columbia College of Expresion.
95 Years Ago -1929
Helen McConnaughtry, who teaches English and music at the Marcus High School, has resigned and taken a position in a Chicago Tea Room.
George Tutt, local hardware dealer handling the Majestic ranges, will hold a special demonstration of these famous stoves at his store on February 11 to 16.
Mr. & Mrs. W.J. Satterlee are the happy parents of a baby girl born February 4.
Mrs. Edna Abels passed away at Long Beach, CA after an illness of two years.
85 Years Ago -1939
Word has been received from Washington that the Cherokee County Rural Electric Cooperative has received a grant in the amount of $130,000 for the construction of about 116 miles of line in Cherokee County which will serve 288 members.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon February 7 at Trinity Lutheran Church for Christ Grauer.
80 Years Ago – 1944
The work of moving the equipment of the Marcus News to our new location under the Farmers State Bank building is now in progress.
There will be a Band Contest to be held at the high school gymnasium on Friday evening, February 11. This concert will feature performances by both beginners and concert bands.
75 Years Ago -1949
Mrs. Bob Ames and Marcella Garvin each received fractured collar bones Monday afternoon when the car they were riding in to LeMars basketball tournament upset on Highway 5 west of Remsen.
Mr. & Mrs. C.G. Lighter of Ocheyedan will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary this Sunday, February 6.
The community was deeply saddened by the death of Joe Kestle, 56, a resident of Marcus township for 33 years.
70 Years Ago -1954
Mr. & Mrs. C.O. Johnson of Archer will observe their golden anniversary on Wednesday, February 10.
John H. Smith, 97, a prominent pioneer of the Cleghorn Community, passed away Friday, January 8 at the Scared Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Mr. & Mrs. Lee Simons are the parents of a daughter born Wednesday, January 27.
Holy Name’s cheerleaders won first place honors at the Sioux City diocese tournament held at Sioux City last Sunday afternoon and evening. Cheerleaders are Mary Cook, Jean Keffler, Sandra Delaney, Kitty Boever, and Mary Offerman.
65 Years Ago -1959
The Panther Patrol of Troop 113 of Marcus won second place in the First Aid contest held at Orange City last Wednesday night.
Seba Lodge honored all members of 25 years or more at a favorite dish dinner at the Masonic Temple.
Iowa Public Service Company plans to enlarge the Marcus substation and do a partial rebuild of the location distribution system.
The Grauer Radio & TV is undergoing a complete remodeling job.
60 Years Ago -1964
Evelyn Brady is Holy Name’s 1964 Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow.
Mr. & Mrs. Norman Smith will observe their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, February 2.
Chuck Sand was elected to another year as head of the Marcus Commercial Club at its January meeting.
The Marcus Fire Department is asking people to look over their cooking utensils and tableware and see if there is something they can donate towards equipping the kitchen and dining facility of the new fire station.
55 Years Ago -1969
Sections of three Illinois Central freigh trains were stuck in a snow drift two and a half miles west of Marcus from Thursday until Friday afternoon of last week stopping all traffic from Sioux City to points east on the Illinois main line.
Marcus won their own wrestling invitational tournament with eight individual champions Saturday, January 25.
Mr. & Mrs. Tom Rassel are the parents of a daughter born, Monday, January 30.
Harold (Toots) Wallin, 45, passed away Friday afternoon at his home in Beaverton, Oregon.
50 Years Ago -1974
During this past weekend of basketball action the Eagles under coach Terry Horsley picked up the Little Sioux Tournament championship. Teams falling to Marcus were the once beaten Hinton Blackhawks, Willow T-birds, Remsen Rockets and the Eastwood Raiders.
Three hundred students from twenty schools came to the district large group speech contest at Marcus last Saturday.
Mr. & Mrs. Les Mohning are parents of their first child, a boy, born Saturday, January 22 at ST. Luke’s Hospital in Sioux City.
Diane Nelson, has completed her internship at Mercy Hospital, Council Bluffs as a medical technologist and has accepted a position on the hospital staff.
A fire in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Fred Ducommun damaged the kitchen and utility areas and caused extensive smoke damage throughout the house.
45 Years Ago – 1979
Mr. & Mrs. Louis Weber will observe their 50th Wedding Anniversary.
The Borg-Warner Acceptance Corporation has promoted Richard Carey to Branch Manager of the Sioux City, Iowa Equipment Banch.
The varsity wrestlers were pinned by the George Blue Jays Friday night by the score of 29-23.
Wayne Barnes of Marcus is alive and well thanks to the awareness and persistence of John Sand in investigating a situation that most people would have overlooked.
The long-awaited Senior Citizens’ mini-bus has finally arrived here in Marcus.
Mr. & Mrs. Delbert Joslin’s son David, is now at Newport, RI teaching school at the US Naval Academy.
40 Years Ago –1984
The Community Center board extends its thanks to Joe and Peg Wurth for the great job they did in makin the fund drive “Thermometer” sign which has been placed at the corner of Main and Cedar Streets.
Lyle Schmillen, sons Scott, Craig, and Mark, and daughter-in-law Sherry were recent contestants on the Family Fued show hosted by Richard Dawson. Lyle is the son of Mrs. Edna Schmillen.
Chuck and Kay Ogren are proud to announce the arrival of their first child, a daughter, born on January 16.
Diane Reimers Froslan is th enew owner of Kids Korner in Wayzata, Minnesota. Diane is the daughter of Mrs. John Reimers of rural Marcus.
