110 Years Ago – 1914
The Masonic and Eastern Star officers were installed Tuesday evening. Eastern Star installed Maude Paine Day, worthy matron. Teh Masons installed W.W. White, worshipful master.
Charles Sylvester is remodeling his home, the old Swedish church building.
The H.B. McLaughlin Cafe has purchased a beautiful electric piano at the cost of $500.
100 Years Ago – 1924
William Hart and Tom Meighan are featured at the Kay Theatre this week.
George Coburn of Tilden Township is a candidate for state senator to succeed E.H. Cambell of Battle Creek.
The Marcus High School basketball team broke even on tow doubleheader games Thursday evening. The Clehgorn boys defeated the Marcus boys 32-5 and the Marcus girls defeated the Cleghorn girls 12-2.
Mr. & Mrs. Lowell Robinson of Bronson are the parents of a baby born Sunday, January 27.
95 Years Ago -1929
Mrs. W.E. Rose a resident of Cherokee County for fifty seven years passed away at her home in Marcus Sunday evening.
Donald Gray, Madge Barnes and Catherine Woods will represent the Marcus public school in the sub-county declamatory contest.
A grade Shorthorn cow owned by Robert Porter has given birth to fives calves during the past year, triplets and twins.
The first meeting of the Boy Scouts troop was attended by 32 local boys.
Mr. & Mrs. Matt Schmillen are parents of a son born January 20.
Fred’s Place has reopened in the White Front building on Main Street.
Sheriff Sangwin up to this week has issued 73 permits to carry concealed weapons.
Mr. & Mrs. George Taber who have lived in this community for 12 years, plan to move to Paw Paw, Illinois.
85 Years Ago -1939
John Sand, a local farmer and corn dealer, set a new price record for corn at a shelling bee at Carwith last Saturday when he paid $25.00 for one bushel.
Norma Alesch is the new society editor of the Marcus News, replacing Lucille Anderson.
Funeral services for Walter Barnes were held at the Methodist Church in Marcus Thursday.
Mrs. G.A. Brink has presented to the Marcus High School an electric score board. Each team’s score are visible at all times and indicate the number of minutes tha thave elapsed in the quarter.
Some 4 inche os snow fell in Marcus and the community Monday night. There was no wind with the snow and the streets and highways remain open.
The Methodist chuch members are having a father-son banquet, Thursday evening in the church parlors.
Robert Kelly of Marcus last week joined the staff of the Cherokee Courier as city editor. Mr. Kelly was formerly employed by the news.
80 Years Ago – 1944
Dr. Melvin Nelson, a recent graduate of Iowa State Veterinarian College, is now located in Marcus. His office is with Dr. R. E. Simonsen, prominent veterinarian in this community.
2nd Lt. John Kelly of Marcus, a Bombardier, will soon complete an intensive course in combat flying at the Alexandria Army Air Base in Louisiana and will go overseas to a combat area in the near future.
The Marcus Eagles were defeated Friday at Aurela 43 to 27.
75 Years Ago -1949
At Tuesday noon’s Rotary luncheon, Rex Rosburg offered the use of his bowling alleys for one day for the benefit of the Infantile Paralysis Foundation’s March of Dimes.
Quite a number of people attended the opening of the Shamrock Cafe in Granville Monday. The cafe was opened by Matt Brandy, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Brady of Marcus.
Ben Beck was recently elected Assistant Sergeant Arms of the state senate for the new term at Des Moines but declined the appointment.
A hog house and 64 head of hog were destroyed by fire early Sunday afternoon on the Hans Rohlfsen farm Northwest of Marcus.
70 Years Ago -1954
The community was shocked this week by the announcement posted at Lage’s Cafe. Fred’s Place and the Soda Lunch that coffee had gone up to 10 cents a cup.
Marguerite Christensen, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. John Christensen, is one of five Iowa State College coeds seeking the title of Queen of Independent Student Ball.
Oscar Heline was re-elected president of the Farmers Grain Dealers Association of Iowa at the Convention convention in Des Moines.
65 Years Ago -1959
The Panther Patrol of Troop 113 of Marcus won second place in a First Aid contest held at Orange City.
The Marcus Fire department was called to the Nile Eberly home in east Marcus to subdue a recalcitrant clothes dryer. Little damage was done.
The bowling team of the Farmers Cooperative Elevator of Marcus won the city championship at Larry’s Lane with 2932 pins at the recently completed tournament.
60 Years Ago -1964
The Marcus Fire Department was called to the Elmer Theisen farm west of Marcus Tuesday by a hog house fire.
Dr. and Mrs. Hobson and Alice attended the NW District meeting of the Chiropractic Society of Iowa at Storm Lake Sunday afternoon.
Mrs. George Engelke, 60, passed away early Tuesday mornign at her home in Sutherland following a three month illness.
55 Years Ago -1969
Robert Hanson is the new manager of the Marcus Division of the Moor Man Manufacturing Company.
The Marcus Fire Department has asked the News to express its thanks to Lowell Nelson for a new ambulance cot for their unit.
Gary Rasmussen underwent an appendectomy Sunday afternoon at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
Kenneth Ogren son of Mr. & Mrs. Paul Ogren of Marcus graduated from Westmar College in LeMars.
Gayle Ames, Marcus seniro and daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Bob Ames will compete for the tile of Iowa Junior Miss in the state contest in Spencer Sunday evening February 2.
This Saturday, January 25, the EAgles are hosting their first invitational wrestling meet.

Crist Droegmiller, custodian in the Marcus Community School for 12 years passed away following a lingering illness.
Monday afternoon and supper guests in the home of Mr. & Mrs Elmer Blietz to help Mrs. Blietz celebrate her birthday were Mr. & Mrs. Jess Norvel and Nora Conley.
Koe Phillips of Marcus died January 16 at a Des Moines hospital.
Mr. & Mrs. Rich Ruden are the poud parents of a baby girl born Friday, January 11.
Marcus defeated Willow in a Tuesday night wrestling dual by a score of 39-18.

A Monday morning coffee was held in the home of Mrs. Bob Lauman in observance of Mrs Howard Juhl’s birthday.
Cindy Carnes performed her Voice of Democracy speech, “Why I care About Americans” at a county meeting of the VFW Auxiliary in Cherokee. She was the county winner and received a $20.00 check.
Francis Junior Briggs died suddenly January 10 at his home in Marcus.
The Marcus Grapplers ran into a strong Woodbury Central team Tuesday night and were defeated 32-21.
Keith Rupp of Fremont, NE formerly of Marcus has accepted the mangership of a new Sherman Williams paint store in Lincoln, NE.

The Community center board would like to thank all of those who have responded to the fund drive in the past few weeks.
Denny Spieler’s 33 points helped the Marcus Eagles down the Floyd Valley T-Birds, 74-50 on Friday night.
Mrs. Julius Farm, 86, of Pierson passed away Sunday in a nursing home in Whiting.
Tim Rupp, a senior at Meriden Cleghorn School, has been selected to serve as a page in the Iowa House of Representatives during the current session of the legislature.
