110 Years Ago – 1913
At a meeting of the Cooperative Company attended by 75 stockholders it was decided to erect a stone building in the spring.
The use of intoxicating liquors or of tobacco in any form by any student is prohibited. Violation of this rule will be punished by suspension or expulsion from school as many be necessary to stop the practice. Signed by D. S Twogood, F.E. Loomis, E. Turner, D.W. Sims and J.W. Nield.
The businessman of Marcus enjoyed an unusually large holiday trade this year and exceeded their expectations.
100 Years Ago – 1923
Last Saturday the thermometer dropped to 25 degrees below zero as winter’s first blizzard struck.

Funeral services for Andrew Olson, who passed away last Thursday morning following a few days illness caused by pneumonia.
While members of the family were attending the funeral services for Mrs. D.J. Twogood, wife of former Marcus mayor, thieves raided the hen house and stole 50 chickens.
The first poultry show of the Cherokee County Poultry Association opened this morning at Cherokee with every indication of a successful affair.
85 Years Ago -1938
Henry Strampe Jr. of Paullina bowled a 300 game at the Marcus Bowling Tournament. He is the brother of Otto Strampe of Marcus.
Nagle’s Food Shop is advertising coffee at 26 cents a pound.
Mr. and Mrs. William Baumgartel are the parents of a son born Wednesday, December 28 at the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
80 Years Ago – 1943
Robert Ames, Sergeant is an Aerial Engineer-gunner on a heavy bombardment crew now training on the Army Air Base, Casper, Wyoming.
L.W. Barnes was elected chairman of the Cherokee County board of supervisors at the annual meeting of supervisors, Monday at the Court House.
One Monday night January 10 the local high school boys and girls teams will play the Meriden teams here.
75 Years Ago -1948
The first and second teams of Holy Name High School played the Remsen Public School teams Tuesday night at Remsen. The Holy Name first team lost with a score of 40-24 and the second team won with a score of 22-16.
Rex Rosburg carried off first prize money in the singles in the city bowling tournament with a score of 676 winning him $15.00.
There are eleven more cases of infantile paralysis in Cherokee county in 1948 then during the previous year. W.H. Fishman, county chairman of the 1949 March of Dimes announced.
70 Years Ago -1953
The Marcus Eagles made it eight out of nine Tuesday evening at Meriden by a score 54-42.
Funeral services for Rasmus Pedersen 66, a former resident of Marcus, were held from the home of his brother Carl here Monday afternoon and burial was made in the Marcus Amherst cemetery.
65 Years Ago -1958
The name of Mrs. Oliver Miller was drawn at Hogue Jewelry to enter the Jewel House drawing for three new Chevrolet automobiles.
The building housing the East Side Tavern and the East Side Service located on Highway 143 was razed by fire early Sunday evening.
The Marcus grocery closed its doors Tuesday morning. The business has been operated by Mr. & Mrs. John Poldervaart.

Frederick Hinspeter 66, of LeMars died Saturday at a hospital there after a two day illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Joe Rosener are the parents of a daughter born Sunday, December 29.3
The Marcus girls pulled a thriller out of the fire here Monday night beating Aurelia 49-47.

Mr. & Mrs. Robert Lauters became the parents of a daughter born Thursday, December 26.
Mrs. Marie Dunn was the winner of the Vista fry pan and John Miller won the Safari light at Gamble’s Christmas drawing.

Jeanette Ernest graduated from Morningside College December 2. She has accepted a position as kindergarten teacher at Harney School in Sioux Sioux.
Parents and friends of speech students are invited to attend the presentation of one act plays to be given on Jan. 8.
45 Years Ago – 1978
Cherokee County farmland increased in value during the past year to an average of $1,772 per acre according to an ISU study. That’s up from $1,563/acre a year ago.
Orville Tapper, well known Cherokee County farmer was named to the County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee by delegates to the ASC county convention held Friday, December 15.
