110 Years Ago – 1912
The band boys are making big preparations to hold an oyster supper in the fry and Bass building Saturday evening.
105 Years Ago – 1917
Catholic bazaar: fried chicken 5¢, baked Beans 5¢, fruit salad 5¢; pie 5¢; cake or cookies 5¢; and rools 2¢.
Work began last Monday on the construction of the new brick Illinois Central passenger station.
The second annual colt show will be held October 10 and a large number of horses are expected to be entered.
90 Years Ago – 1932
The junior class of the Marcus high school will present “Here Comes Patricia” as their class play October 26 in the school auditorium.
Marcus high school Eagles suffered their first loss of the year on the home field Friday evening at the hands of Kingsley’s superior eleven.
The News advertised that it will pay 25 per dozen for fresh eggs on subscriptions up to October 15.
Howard Peavey cracked a bone in his leg Friday night in the football game.
Nagle Brothers recently completed the building of a poultry trailer in which to ship poultry to Chicago.
85 Years Ago -1937
Plans for a new home to house The Marcus News office has been abandoned and the building occupied by The News for 27 years, will be remodeled. Work started last week.
Thieves broken into the Satterlee Drug store Tuesday evening and made a $140 haul in drugs and medicine.
80 Years Ago – 1942
Holy Name school will observe their golden jubilee October 15.
Earl Cauwe sold his residence property to Jethro Stowater who will take possession Jan. 1.
November 22 has been set for the day when gas rationing will come into effect.
The John W. Galles farm of 160 acres was sold Thursday to Ray Alesch. The Gordon Garvin family is now occupying the farm.
Carl Dorr is enrolled in the Navy diesel school at the University of Illinois.
75 Years Ago -1947
Deloris Kielhorn was honored at a prenuptial shower Friday afternoon in the Methodist Church.
Construction work on the basement and foundation for the new A.F. Swanson home on the west side of the street a block south of the Holy Name Church is practically completed.
The basement and foundation of Merle Baumgardners’ new home is completed. The building, a 26×28 one story home, is south of the Ray Niemann home. Mr. Baumgardner has been farming his father’s farm south of Cherokee, and plans to move to town and will be employed by the Marcus Lumber Company.
Mr. & Mrs. Fred Hoover entertained at a birthday dinner Monday evening in honor of their son, Michael on his first birthday.
70 Years Ago – 1952
Last Friday evening the Marcus football team managed to win the game against Schaller –6.
Elvera Eldridge became the bride of Robert Specht at a double ring ceremony September 28 at Trinity Lutheran Church.
Galdys McConnell became the bride of Leonard Stover Sunday afternoon, October 5 at a lovely wedding at Grace Methodist Church.
Mr. & Mrs. Elmore Wallin announce the arrival of a 6lb., 13 oz. daughter born October 2.
65 Years Ago – 1957
Mr. & Mrs. Frank Feese announce the approaching marriage of their daughter, Rose Marie, to Peter Lauters, son of Mr. & Mrs. Ray Lauters.
The Baumann Bakery here has reopened on a full-times basis, with Mrs. Pete Bird as local manager.
Lawrence Reinert announce the opening of his Garage & Salvage Business in the large steel building west of the stockyards. He offers used parts for auto, trucks and tractors and plans to do general repair work.
60 Years Ago – 1962
Mrs. Alvin Schmillen suffered a broken hip when she fell at her home.
Pvt. Norma Chaney, 18, daughter of Mrs. Vergie Chaney of Cleghorn, recently completed eight weeks of basic training at the Women’s Army Corps Center at Fort McCellan, Alabama.
Guests Saturday afternoon at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Leonard Nelson to help their daughter, Betty, celebrate her fifth birthday were her grand parents, Mr. & Mrs. Aaron Alm and Mrs. Martin Nelson, and Mrs. George Gottsche and girls.
Lester Full narrowly escaped with his life several weeks ago when driving a pickup southwest of Cleghorn. He failed to see the train coming and he jumped out of the truck. The truck was badly damaged when it struck into the train.
55 Years Ago – 1967
Pete Block has accepted a position at the Community Coop Oil Co. Mr. Block is replacing Lee Garvin, who is the Golden Sun Feed salesman at Marcus Chick’n Feed.
Nancy Means entertained a group of girl friends in her home Sunday evening with a slumber party in observance of her 16th birthday.
John W. Smith, 63, of Meriden died suddenly Sunday in Cherokee from a heart attack condition. His home had been at Meriden for the past 22 years.
50 Years Ago – 1972
Lowell Nelson of the Nelson Funeral Home of Marcus, announced today that he has completed arrangement for a merger of the Nelson Funeral Home with the Mauer Funeral Home of LeMars.
Joe Alesch, 68, a lifelong resident of Marcus, died Thursday evening, October 5 at St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital in Sioux City after a long illness.
45 Years Ago – 1977

Erwin Mayer of Marcus shows his 3 1/2 pound sweet potato. He said the season was just right to grow big potatoes.
Tim Irwin graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic at Davenport. Dr. Irwin and Mrs. Tom Irwin have moved to Cherokee where he is employed at the Kennedy Chiropractic Clinic.
The Iowa Conservation Commission has approved a $5,654 grant to the City of Cleghorn for the construction of tennis courts.
40 Years Ago –1982
The Marcus high School marching band will show off their new uniforms during Homecoming festivities on October 15. The are the result of seven years of money making projects by the Marcus Music Boosters.
Mr. & Mrs. Bob Hagey of Marcus will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary on Friday, October 15, at the Marcus Golf Course with an open house.
Pat Bunt of Cleghorn announces the Grand Opening of Pat’s Body Shop at 413 N. Main in Marcus on Saturday, October 16.
35 Years Ago – 1987
The Cleghorn Centennial Committee is sponsoring a slogan contest for the 1990 centennial celebration. Deadline for entries is noon November 4th. A $10 prize will be given for the winning slogan.
Four of the 12 youngsters from Marcus who competed at the Jaycees regional run, punt and past competition have qualified to go to the state competition at Cedar falls UNI dome. These winners are Mike Hueser, Greg Galles, Jeff Spieler and Brad Smith.
30 Years Ago – 1992
Meriden recognized Karen Eggar, Naomi Kintigh and Edie Sechler for their added responsibilities in the MMC School District.
Homecoming Them at MMC was “Hard to Handle” Brian Scott and Jodi Ehrig were crowned King & Queen. Neva Witter was parade marshal of the MMC’s Homecoming.
