Clarice McDonald of Sioux City and Donald Keys were married Saturday evening at Sioux City and will make their home in Lincoln, NE.
Howard Holmes has a Junior Red Cross life saving badge and is now qualified as a swimming examiner.
The Nick Bork family was injured in a bad accident seven miles west of Peter Miller corner when Silas Means, driving a truck, collided with their car Thursday morning.
85 Years Ago -1937
Mrs. Augusta Slagter will leave her apartment in the Gus Hadel duplex September 1 and will take a position as housekeeper for Mrs. Anna Heller.
Matt Agnes resigned his position at Sjostrom Bros. To operate a co-operative poultry packing plant in LeMars.
Ernest Kauffman became owner of the W.G. Pitts 160 acre farm five miles southwest of Marcus this week.
Mr. & Mrs. W.L. Gund are improving their residence property by an addition two stories high on the west side of their home.
Mrs. Marie Loomis has purchased a four-room house in west Marcus owned by Peter Rassel estate.
80 Years Ago – 1942
Mrs. Ronald Waggoner resigned her position at the Delaney store and will leave for Seattle to join her husband who is in the Coast Guard.
Announcement is made of the marriage of Marian Shostrom of Alta and Loren Dorr, which was July 3 at Waukegan, IL.
A new open top refrigerator display rack was installed in the Delaney grocery store this week.
The Marcus Merchants baseball team was declared county champions at a meeting of the league representative’s Monday evening.
75 Years Ago -1947
The Lage Café this week installed an 80,000 cubic foot air conditioner. This with the exception of the Lyric Theatre, is the first business place in Marcus to adapt this modern comfort.
Work on the excavation of the basement under Mac’s Place building was started this wee. Frank McQueen, the owner, plans to put a full basement under the building.
Mr. & Mrs. Hans Rasmussen will leave Sunday in company with their two daughters for New York City. They will board the ship Drottning Holm, August 22, for a three-month trip to Denmark.
70 Years Ago – 1952
Mr. & Mrs. Arley Garage are the parents of a son, Lee Edward, born August 14.
Oscar Heline has purchased the S.W. Schmillen 120 acre farm in Marcus Township, the price being $345 per acre.
Friends and relatives gathered in the Leonard Harms home on Tuesday evening of last week to help Gary celebrate his 5th birthday.
65 Years Ago – 1957
Mr. & Mrs. Clifford Ferrin are parents of a daughter born August 13 at Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars. She has been named Marilyn Jo.
Mary Ann Miller, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Harvey Miller of Marcus, representing the Amherst Busy Bees 4-H Club was runner-up in the “Queen of the Cherokee Fair” contest.
Quite a few Marcus people were at Remsen last Saturday where they attended an open house offered by the West Iowa Telephone Company to mark the installation of a new dial telephone system in that community.
60 Years Ago – 1962
Jim Nelson and John Addy have completed requirements for Eagle Palms. They are the first to hold this honor in the history of scouting in Marcus.
The Marcus Oil Little League team and their families were honored by their managers, Lyle Schlenger and Merle Mead, at a potluck picnic in the park Sunday.
Will Kaiser, who farms north of Marcus, bought the Mrs. Anna Ohlendorf estate property which was sold at auction Saturday. The home, at 207 South Locust Street, brought $14,000.
55 Years Ago – 1967
This community was shocked Saturday morning to learn of the death of Joe Marquis, 54, in a boating accident on the Oahe Reservoir near Pierre, SD.
Mr. & Mrs. Frank Bierman of Pierson observed their 50th wedding anniversary September 3 with an open house at Trinity Lutheran Church of rural Marcus.
Donna Snyder returned to her classes at St. Joseph School of Nursing in Sioux City after spending the summer with her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Robert Snyder.
50 Years Ago – 1972
Mr. & Mrs. John Fry announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Margaret Ann, to Stephen Martens, son of Mr. & Mrs. Sydney Martens of Arkansas City, KS.
Mr. & Mrs. William Hurd of Meriden announce the engagement of their daughter, Nancy K., to Richard O. Miller, son of Mr. & Mrs. Oliver Miller of Cleghorn.
Roger Leavitt defeated the bid of Rev. Richard Viney in the election of director at large for the Marcus Community School District.
30 Years Ago –1977
Gorss Inc. of Marcus has started the groundwork on the structure to be located on the area now being used for machinery display, just north of the golf course.
Cindy Hueser recently returned from a trip to Sweden where she visited in the home of Miss Eva Strombeck at Sundsvall, Sweden. Eva was an exchange student in the Marcus Community School last year.
40 Years Ago – 1982
Pat Bunt of Cleghorn announces the opening of his new body shop located at 412 North Main in Marcus, known as Pat’s Body Shop.
Gross Inc. announces that Pascal Fry of Cherokee has joined their staff as machinery salesman.
The winner of the color TV given away by the Sand Seed softball team was Joe Hueser of Marcus.
35 Years Ago – 1987
Tony Simons of Marcus showed the grand champion steer at the Marcus Fair.
Brian Reinholddt of Olathe, KS returned home Sunday morning after spending a week in the home of his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Reinholdt.
Kevin Lehan of Marcus has been admitted to Omicron Delta Epsilon, the International Honor Society in Economics.
30 Years Ago – 1992
James and Alta Wilcox celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a family dinner at Danny’s at Cherokee. It was hosted by their children. Alta Birch and James Wilcox were married August 28, 1932 at Cleghorn.
Keith and Denise Behrens of Meriden are the parents of their first child a 6 pound 15 ounce son, Cody Patrick, born August 21st.
25 Years Ago – 1997
Former Marcusite, Jerolyn Doody, Frangenbert 55. of Radcliffe, Iowa died Tuesday, August 9th ager a long battle with cancer. Survivors include her husband, 3 children, her parens, 3 sisters and 4 brothers.
20 Years Ago – 2002
Marcus has recived 11 inches of rain in the last week.
Kay Dettmann granddaughter, Katie Lantz, of Calhoun County was named the 2002 Iowa State Fair Queen.
Dick Booth returned home in Devenport after spending 10 days with his mother Mildred Booth. They celebrated Mildred’s birthday on Sunday,August 18th with Kenneth and Carole McQueen, in their Lake Okoboji home.
