Carl A. Nielsen

Carl A. Nielsen, 77, of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away suddenly Thursday morning, January 20, 2022 at his residence.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 25, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Jonathan Riggert will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee, Iowa with military rites by L.A. Wescott Post #2253 of the V.F.W. and the Cherokee American Legion. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the church on Tuesday. Public visitation will be held on Monday, January 24, 2022 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. with the family present from 5-7:00 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Carl was born on November 9, 1944 to Leland and Emma (Doerr) Nielsen at LeMars, Iowa. He attended Trinity Lutheran Schools, graduating in 1963. He enlisted in the United States Army Reserves.
He was united in marriage on May 26, 1967 at Galva, Iowa to Connie Whitmer, together they had three children. He worked at Wilson Foods, which later became Tyson Foods, where he worked for 40 years.
Carl was a very active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. He sang in the church choir, assisted with the Pals Project, and was a member of the Christian Education Foundation and Toastmasters Association. Carl volunteered in the Trinity Food Pantry and Dartball League. He also spent time volunteering at many nursing homes. Carl was also a member of the Cherokee American Legion.
Carl was a gifted singer and enjoyed sharing his talent with others. He loved spending time with his friends and family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leland and Emma Nielsen, in-laws Howard and Lillian Whitmer, granddaughter Bailey Cordova, brother and sister-in-law Francis (Marlys) Nielsen, sister-in-law Sandy Schaefer, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Carl will lovingly be remembered by his wife, Connie of Cherokee, Iowa; three children Colby Nielsen of Cherokee, Iowa, Carrie (Chris) Cordova of Cherokee, Iowa, Cindy (Randy) Weflen of Aurelia, Iowa; five grandchildren Breanna (Trent) Sorgdrager of Meriden, Iowa, Andrew (Sara) Freese of Cherokee, Iowa, Nathan Weflen of Aurelia, Iowa, and Kimberly Weflen of Aurelia, Iowa; great-grandchildren Logan, Lucas, and Levi; brother and sister-in-law Tarris (Judy) Nielsen of Marcus, Iowa.
