105 Years Ago – 1917
As A, I. Birch, proprietor of the old Woodall farm nine miles south of Marcus, is leaving for Montana, he will sell out at public auction February 6.
Adeline Ohlendorf went to Remsen Tuesday where she will take a course in dressmaking.
A rural school in Amherst township last Saturday received a flag and pole from the Iowa Patriotic Association. It is the purpose to have a flag placed on every school house in the state.
90 Years Ago – 1932
Glen Countryman has purchased the Harry Baumgardner barber shop and took possession on Monday, Lou McDaniel will continue to work in the shop. Mr. Baumgardner will operate the farm upon which he has been living near Quimby.
A pretty wedding was solemnized in Holy Name church on Tuesday morning at eight-thirty o’clock when Celestine M. Alesch became the bride of Andrew Ballard.
Ray J. Meylor and family are moving this week from a farm near Remsen to one in Marcus township.
Mrs. William Hoxsie was pleasently surprised on her 70th birthday Thursday when friends and neighbors came in.
85 Years Ago -1937
Harriet Rae will represent the local American Legion Auxiliary with tap dancing numbers on the program which is being presented Sunday at Cherokee.
Complying with the state board of health rules the local board of health today ordered all students to be vaccinated for small pox or remain out of school for the next two weeks.
J.F. Collins and daughter Margaret departed Tuesday afternoon by train for Los Angeles, CA, where they will remain a month and a half.
80 Years Ago – 1942
George Wheeler has accepted a position offered him by the Consolidated Aircraft Company of San Diego, CA, which builds bombers for the Army and Navy.
Young men now students in high school or college who have reached the age of seventeen may be enlisted in Class VI of the Navy Reserve.
Kenneth Lundell, 23, of Meriden was killed instantly in a head-on automobile collision shortly after 1:00 a.m. Saturday. He is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Harry Lundell.
75 Years Ago -1947
According to word received by H. W. Coleman, owner of the local Gamble Store, 200,000 pairs of pipelined Army Air Force flight pants types A-10 and A-11 have been purchased from the Army Air Corps depot at Topeka, KS, by Gamble-Skogomo Inc. for distribution through Gamble stores. This is one of the largest purchases of war surplus clothing to date.
Just received a carload of famous Wadge nut coal at the Marcus Lumber Company. Ideal for cook stove or heater.
70 Years Ago – 1952
A sudden and powerful blaze erupted Thursday morning in the back of the Lyric Theatre building, and in a matter of minutes the fate of the interior of the brick structure was foregone conclusion. It was a total loss. The Masonic Temple was also heavily damaged.
Pfc. Dale Franck has been promoted to staff sergeant now and is still stationed at Offut Air Force Base at Omaha.
65 Years Ago – 1957
The project of building the shelter house at the playground is virtually completed. A fair estimate of the value of the building would be about $3,000, but through donations of gravel, hauling and grading, as well as a lot of free labor, the project was completed at the cost of $1,739.84.
An anniversary party honoring Mr. & Mrs. Ervin Mayer on their 37th wedding date was held in the Mayer home Sunday, January 20.
60 Years Ago – 1962
The West Iowa Telephone company reports that 1,178,257 local calls went through the Marcus exchange during the year 1961. This is an average of 1,414 calls for each telephone customer.
Dick Boever of Marcus nearly made a bowling history when he had a perfect game going for nine frames in Big Bowl competition over KVTV. Dick spared the tenth frame and ended with a 278.
55 Years Ago – 1967
Mr. & Mrs. Leonard Nelson have purchased the home owned by the late Felix Treinen.
Mr. & Mrs. J.C. Miller of Cleghorn celebrated their golden anniversary January 22.
Mr. & Mrs. Harold Bolton and Mr. & Mrs. Roy E. Nelson, accompanied by Darlene Bengton and Mark Ammons of Aurelia, attended the Governor’s Inaugural Ball in Des Moines.
50 Years Ago – 1972
Fritz Ogren, 71 died Saturday morning in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Sioux City following a short illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Andy Ballard observed their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house at Holy Name Hall.
Mr. & Mrs. Melvin Mayer entertained a dinner Sunday in honor of John Mayer on his 83rd Birthday.
45 Years Ago – 1977
Herman Fischer is extending his inventory clearance sale and reducing prices to a whipping 30 percent through Saturday, January 29. Many items my be purchased at below cost figures. If there is anything in the hardware line, normally carried by Gamble’s, is now is the time to purchase it and save money.
The Marcus Eagles traveled to the Sioux City Auditorium last Saturday night to defeat Akron 73-46 and win the conference tournament crown. This put Marcus 13-0 in the winning column.
40 Years Ago – 1982
Another weekend of sub-zero temperatures, blizzard conditions, a record of 20 inches of snow and 40 – 50 mph winds brought business to a standstill here. Many are farmers lost livestock.
Mr. & Mrs. Roger Means of Broken, Arrow, OK are the proud parents of an 8 lb. 2oz. son born Tuesday, January 19. He has been named Ian Frazier and has a brother, Ryan, to welcome him home.
35 Years Ago – 1987
Mrs. Eleanor Brady, 91, of Marcus passed away Monday in a care center in LeMars after a long illness.
Mrs. Viola Barry visited for 3 weeks at Cold Springs, NY with Mr. & Mrs. James Barry, and one week at Owatonna, MN in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Gerald Barry and family.
Debra Marie Hohbach Herring, daughter of Gerald and Jeanette Hohbach, Marcus graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Adult Home Economics Education.
30 Years Ago – 1992
Helen Gates, 25 year librarian at Marcus Public Library, was honored by the Library board at a dinner and was presented a gift.
25 Years Ago – 1997
The MMC Jazz Band participated at the annual Iowa Lakes Community College Jazz Festival January 23. The band earned a second place finish. Woodward-Granger placed 1st in the 1A class.
Saturday night mixed bowling league High Individual game; Ray Addy 242 and Sheila Letsche 188; High Individual series; Kirk Letsche 537 and Sheila Letsche 483.
20 Years Ago – 2002
Ashley Johnson and Carly Ruden are featured in the Senior Spotlight. Both plan on further education.
Bob and Crystal Clarkson of Basalt, Colorado announce the birth of a son born January 7,2002. Grandparents are Jack and Fern Clarkson,, great grandmother is Dolores Letsche all of Marcus.
