125 Years Ago – 1897
A daughter was born Friday night to Mr. & Mrs. Ed Gerlach.
Dr. Mullen will occupy rooms over Mankey’s harness shop. A stairway has been added to the north side of the building for outside access.
120 Years Ago – 1902
The Amherst Telephone Company held a meeting Monday evening with nearly all members participating. Everyone stayed in their home as the meeting was done over the wire.
The eleven year old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. George Billings died as a result of whooping cough and lung trouble. She was laid to rest in the Marcus cemetry.
115 Years Ago – 1907
E.F Smith has sold his barber shop in the basement of the Citizen Bank building to N.C. Weimer and has given possession of same. Mr. Smith has been here for several years and is on of the best workmen the town ever had.
110 Years Ago – 1912
The Christian Church of Cleghorn will be dedicated Sunday, February 11, 191, with Rev. J.M. Coombs officiating.
Colia Cisne and Amos Kellen were married in the home of her parents, Mr. & Mrs. C.W. Cisne.
105 Years Ago – 1917
George Peters held a demonstration of an individual hog house at the Peters Bros. Garage. He received orders for 18 farm owners.
Marcus should be proud the building record during the past few years has seen seven modern new residences being put up.
P.W. Moore was able to be down town last Saturday for the first time since his illness and expects to resume his work at the First National Bank within a short time.
O.W. Ekbald is a advertising a removal sale of $8,000 stock of farm implements in his shop this week.
Harry Baumgardner of Quimby has purchased a barber shop at Calumet and took possession last week.
90 Years Ago – 1932
Petitions have been circulated and signed by more then 50 percent of the land owners in Marcus township asking the board of supervisors to gravel six miles of township roads from Elmer Hansen farm north.
Wesley, son of Mr. & Mrs. Tom Carney, sustained a fracture of the right arm Wednesday while playing on the slide at the school grounds.
Ray J. Meylor and family are moving this week from a farm near Remsen to one in Marcus township.
85 Years Ago -1937
The Marcus council approved of the plans of the Iowa Highway Commission for the paving into Marcus. The road will extend northway from primary No.5, one mile north to the Edmonds corner and wet to Main Street and ending at the intersection of Main and Railroad Street.
Dorr’s all modern hatchery, which is now located in the building formerly occupied by Gates Panatoruim, is all ready for business and they will make their first setting next Saturday evening.
Mr. & Mrs. J.W. Neild, prominent residents of this city, will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary Monday, January 11.
80 Years Ago – 1942
Duane Beaton returned home on Saturday after graduating from the Frye Aircraft School at Omaha. Donald Beaton Bud Wheeler, and Glen McConnell drove to Omaha to bring him home.
Dorothy Marie Seggerman and Dale Dorr were united in marriage at Burbank, CA Sunday, January 3.
The Foley Insurance Agency opened its new office Monday in the Nagel building across from the postoffice.
Paul Wankum had the misfortune to fall and break his arm while building a machine shed on a farm southeast of Marcus Tuesday afternoon.
75 Years Ago -1947
Howard Peavy has accepted the position of manager of the Community Cooperative Oil Company.
Ruby Halstom and Phillip Hazen were united in marriage at a double ring ceremony at Evangelical church in Meriden on December 30.
Mrs. Luella Rae has received word form her son, Roger, saying that he is now stationed at Seuol, Korea. Also located there are James Muehl and Derald Henderickson.
70 Years Ago – 1952
Mr. & Mrs. JoAnn Miller received word last week from Woltz Studio in Des Moines informing them that their son, Danny, had received honorable mention in the cutest baby contest.
Dennis Nelson, son of Dr. & Mrs. M.R. Nelson of Marcus, was the first baby to be born during the New Year at Sacred Heart Hospital.
One of the biggest sales of this season is scheduled for Thursday, January 17, when the property of Ernest Erickson will be sold.
65 Years Ago – 1957
Adam Seel, 59, a life-time resident of the community, died at his home southeast of Marcus Thursday, January 10.
Mr. & Mrs. Vernon Means are parents of a son Duane Edward born January 11.
The Marcus public school’s basketball teams won both their games here last Friday evening, The boys ended with a comfortable 56 to 43 score while the girls romped to an easy 77 to 36 win. The Larrabee team were their victims.
60 Years Ago – 1962
Shirley Carlson, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Carlson of Cleghorn, who is a sophomore at Loretto Heights College of Denver, CO, has been chosen as a member of the vocal chorus in the musical, “Song of Norway.”
Open house was held Sunday, January 7, at the Darwin Smith home in Cleghorn honoring Mr. Smith on his 75th birthday.
Mrs. Julia Woodall passed away at Sacred Heart hospital. Mrs. Woodall was the widow of the late John Woodall.
55 Years Ago – 1967
Airman First Class Kenneth Roberson, son of Mr. & Mrs. Lovell Roberson Sr. of Marcus, helped his organization win the coveted Smith Trophy as the best air defense ground unit in the U.S. Air Force.
Mr. & Mrs. Bob Parker and two children of Sac City have moved into their home recently purchased from and vacated by Mr. & Mrs. Merle Mead.
Mr. & Mrs. Eric Pearson announce the engagement of their daughter, Patricia, to Robert Klingebil of Remsen.
50 Years Ago – 1972
Jane Bird and Tim Dorr were selected by members of the national Honor Society to apply for scholarships given by the National Honor Society.
Bill Bird has accepted a farm representative position with the Steele State Bank at Cherokee. He will continue on the farm as ususal.
Nancy Fischer, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Herman Fischer, won a scholarship in behalf of Missouri Occupational Therapy Association at Washington University in St. Louis on January 8.
Ted Hassman has bought the Delaney Upholstery business from L.E. Delaney. The equipment has been moved to the Hassman residence at 100 N. Locust.
Holy Name Catholic School will be closing its educational facility at the end of the 1971-72 school term.
45 Years Ago – 1977
Mrs. Clarence Beck, 80, Marcus died January 10 in her residence. Services were held in Holy Name Catholic Church.
Judy Wilkens of Marcus is gaining practical experience at Gibson’s Discount Center in Storm Lake this month under a business internship offered by Buena Vista College in cooperation with the company.
40 Years Ago – 1982
Jeff Holmes, son of Karen Holmes is the newest member of the Marcus Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
Mrs. Gilbert, 87, a long time Marcus resident, passed away January 16 in a Omaha hospital. She was survived by a daughter and a son. Services and burial were held in Marcus.

35 Years Ago – 1987
Mr. & Mrs. James Mayer, RR, Marcus, proudly announce the arrival of their first child, Bridget Nichole, Monday, January 5. Bridget weighed 8 lbs. 23. ozs. And was 21 inches long at birth.
The Marcus Eaglet highlighted John Pottebaum in the Senior Spotlight. John is the son of Ronald and Judy Pottebaum. John is well known for the being a music buff, He makes up his own weekly top seventy by listening to the radio and would someday like to be a disc jockey. If John could be anyone; Kasey Kisom, the weekly top 49 host.
Mr. & Mrs. Robert Rupp left October 28 to attend the November 15 wedding of their daughter, Sandra Rupp, and Brick McIntosh. They also attended the wedding of Cathy Tuttle on November 29 at Gersham, OR. They returned home January 8 after spending the remainder of the time visiting with their daughters, Arlan and Beverly Emmert, Bruce and Ruth Schomaker and Brick McIntosh.
30 Years Ago – 1992
LuAnn Drefke, a senior at Iowa State majoring in Horticulture has been awarded the first annual Iowa Seed Association Scholarship. She is the daughter of Max and Nancy Drefke of Marcus.
The annual Marcus Firemen’s Ball will be held this Saturday evening, January 18 at the Marcus Community Center. Music will be supplied by “Transistion”.
25 Years Ago – 1997
Robert F. Galles, 73, Marcus, died Thursday, January 16, 1997, at the Heartland Care Center.
Jackie Pigott is featured in the Senior Spotlight. She see her future in the medical field.
Two very realistic baby “think it over dolls” have been donated to the MMC Child Development class by Mrs. Floyd (Elaine) Rassel in memory of her daughter, Jean.
20 Years Ago – 2002
Winners of the Marcus Jaycees Lighting Contest are 1st place went to Vern Riedmann, 2nd place to Janet Schuetz, 3rd place honors to Don Steffen.Orville and Lila Saxby will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house celebration on Saturday, January 26. Orville and Lila (the former Lila Grauer) were married on January 27, 1952.
