125 Years Ago – 1896
Reverend Black is a new minister in our town and has moved his family here for at least two years.
The local elevators had to shut down as railroad cars were unavailable and the elevators were full.
Henry Straw had a hand crushed in a hay press last week.
120 Years Ago – 1901
Potatoes are selling at 90¢ and they are plentiful.
Mrs. Chatterton moved their household goods to Pierson where she will reside.
C.J. Jackson loaded his household goods and moved to his new home at Manson, MN.
Miss Geneva Jungers and Dr. Calvin Hostetler were married in the Junger’s home. Calvin is a practicing physician here.
115 Years Ago – 1906
We received a light snowfall here Wednesday, the first of the season. Central Minnesota reported 5 inches.
The Anderson & Veline Plumbing and Heating Company installed a steam heating system in the new Christian Church here.
Nettie Frye of Morningside and W. Heller of Amherst Twp. were married in the bride’s home. She teaches in the Marcus Public School and they will make their home in Amherst Twp.
105 Years Ago – 1916
Eugene Webber bought the Henley 160 acre farm in Section 13 in Amherst Twp for $167.25 per acre. Henley bought it from the government for $5.00 per acre.
A number of Amherst people visited the scene of the auto wreck 2 1/2 miles southwest of Fielding where Alexander Dawson and Andrew Irwin were killed. Ed Irwin was seriously injured but is expected to recover.
James Gurley departed for San Juan, TX where he owns 10 acres of land. Mrs. Gurley will join hin and they will make improvements on the property.
95 Years Ago – 1926
Tony Garvin dug 22 busheld of potatoes; three of them weighed 4 1/2 pounds.
The Marcus Golden Eagles defeated Washta 19-2 with Dale Barnes, Harold Booth and August Krekow scoring touchdowns. The Eagles have a 5-0 record and will play Quimby next.
Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Woodall are the parents of a daughter born September 15 and named Doris Mae.
Mrs. Anna Tracey McClintock, 64 died October 17. Survivors include 3 daughters, Alice and Sadie of Marcus and Mrs. Wm. Dalton of Adrian, MN, 4 sons, Michael, Frank and Vince, all of Marcus and James of Dante, SD. The family has lived here since 1881. Services were held in Holy Name with burial in the church cemetery.
90 Years Ago – 1931
Mrs. Iver Johnson of the Fielding area was seriously burned Tuesday evening when she was attempting to start a fire in their heating stove. She poured gasoline instead of kerosene on the fire. She is hospitalized in Sioux City in serious condition.
Mr. and Mrs. Philip Dorr returned home after a four month visit with relatives in Germany. A group of 35 relatives greeted them home Sunday with a bountiful dinner.
Corn picking is progressing rapidly in the Cleghorn area.
The Cleghorn football team was defeated by Correctionville Friday afternoon.
85 Years Ago -1936
A light snow fell Tuesday evening, October 21, the first of the season. The temperature fell below the freezing mark, 27 degrees. That marks the official end of the growing season this year.
Mr. and Mrs. Will Hoke of Cleghorn are the parents of a daughter, born Monday, October 12 and named Mavis Joy.
John J. Ernst, 79, died October 20. He was an early pioneer from Germany and came to Cherokee County in 1885. He is survived by his wife, 2 sons, 2 daughters and a brother and a sister. Funeral services were held in the Methodist Church with burial in Marcus-Amherst Cemetery.
80 Years Ago – 1941
Metcalf Barber Shop’s Ad: To remove blackheads and pimples get a face massage at Metcalf Barber Shop, the only Barber Shop in the world under the sidewalk.
Mrs. S.M. Wixcel was honored at a farewell party in the home of her sister, Mrs. F.E Paine. She will be leaving for Waterloo to make her home.
The entire Marcus football team attended the Nebraska-Indiana football game at Lincoln Saturday. They went by bus acconmpanied by Mr, Birney and Mr. Edsall.
75 Years Ago -1946
Mr. and Mrs.Stanley Birch of Cleghorn are the parents of a son born Saturday morning. He weighed 9 pounds and is named David Lee. He has 2 siblings at home.
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Peavey, Doris and Dennis and Henry Specht returned home Tuesday after spending the weekend in the Otto Wittkopp home in Keokuk.
70 Years Ago – 1951
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Davis are the proud parents of their first child, a 5 pound 11 1/2 ounce daughter, born Monday, October 22. She is named Deborah Kay.
Bernice Bauer of Maryhill and William Dickson were married Wednesday, October 17 in Maryhill Visitation Church. They will make their home in Marcus.
“Ma and Pa Kettle, Back on the Farm” starring Marjorie Main and Percy Kilbride is showing in the Lyric.
65 Years Ago – 1956
Tyrone Power and Kim Novak star in “The Eddy Duchin Story” showing in the local Lyric Friday and Saturday.
Work has started on a new building for Drs. Hobson and Haines, Marcus Chiropractors. It is just east of the Marland Theatre. Carl Klingborg purchased the site and is constructing the 30X60ft. building. He will lease it to the firm.
John Hipple and Judy Ott were crowned King and Queen of the Marcus Homecoming. Kingsley defeated the Eagles 18-7 at Homecoming.
60 Years Ago – 1961
Mr. and Mrs. John McKernan are the parents of a 7 pound 8 ounce daughter, born Wednesday, October 18. She is named Carol and has a brother and a sister at home.
Mr. and Mrs. James Gibson of Fort Worth, TX visited in the Mrs. Myrna Gill and Mrs. Hazel Stratton homes in Meriden over the weekend.
Mrs. Doyle Simonsen, Kristi and Karen of Quimby attended the horse show at the Marquis farm Sunday afternoon.
55 Years Ago – 1966
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ducommun returned to their Cleghorn home after spending six weeks touring Europe, which included 8 countries. They returned on the U.S.S.
Bonnie Simons and Ann Rae were elected student basketball managers Tuesday.
Rev. and Mrs. Robert F. Meyer of Wapenmanda, New Guinea, are the parents of a son, Robert, born October 21.He has a sister, Elizabeth, at home. Mrs. Meyer is remembered as Judy Ott.
50 Years Ago – 1971
Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Braun are the parents of an 8 pound daughter born Sunday, October 10. She is named Jennifer Renee and has a brother, Paul, at home.
Jay Dixson and Renee Horstman, sophomores, were chosen Knight and Lady for October at Marcus Community High School.
Candise Mary Rollins of Dubuque and Daniel Lauters of Marcus are planning a November 26 wedding. She ia a librarian and he teaches high school in Somers. IA.
45 Years Ago – 1976
Marcus Eagles won their third game in a row with a 46-0 victory over Sgt. Bluff.
Dean Garvin of Marcus has been accepted in the Mechanical Technological Program at N.I.T.C. in Sheldon. He will begin his training November 29th.
Steve and Linda Smith, known as “Gentle Persuasion”, played for the Marcus Homecoming Dance. About 260 students and alumni attended the dance.
40 Years Ago – 1981
Meriden-Cleghorn Adult Education will offer a ten weeks course in square dancing, taught by Virgil Schlinz of Danbury at a cost of $50 per couple.
Melvyn Greene has been driving a school bus for Marcus Public for 19 1/2 years. Mel was a 1938 graduate of old MHS.
Mrs. Bill Bird returned home after spending a week with Mr. and Mrs Mike Belby, Mikey and Katie at Fort Knox, KY. She attended the baptism of Katie.
35 Years Ago – 1986
Marilyn Hunefeld was the lucky winner of the car given away at Hesse Chevrolet in Marcus, during their new car show last week.
Rae Anne Rupp and Joseph Alesch were married Septmber 27 in Marcus Holy Name Church. They are at home on a farm near Marcus. He is employed at Bunkers Feed and Supply at Granville.
Mandy Swanger was honored on her First Communion Sunday, October, 12 made at Maryhill. A noon dinner was hosted by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Swanger. Grandma Velrene Swanger made her a cake in the form of a cross.
30 Years Ago – 1991
Stacey Collins is featured in the MMC Senior Spotlight. She plans to attend college.
The MMC Spanish Club will rake your leaves Saturday, October 26 for a donation.
25 Years Ago – 1996
Pearl Henke is pictured at her desk at MMC High School. She replaced Vicki Rainboth who had taken over that position after Elsie Slagter retired after serving 31 years as secretary.
